Happy New Year—let’s make it a safe one for everyone, including our furry and farmyard friends.
💔 NEW YEAR’S EVE IS TERRIFYING FOR ANIMALS IN IRELAND 💔
As we prepare to ring in the new year, it’s important to remember that this is one of the most distressing nights for all animals across Ireland, including pets and farm animals.
Fireworks, both legal and illegal, are already being tested in many areas. The sudden loud noises can send animals—pets, horses, livestock, and wildlife—into a state of panic. Tragically, this often results in animals running away, breaking through enclosures, getting injured, or even losing their lives.
Farm animals, such as cattle and horses, are especially vulnerable. Loud fireworks can cause them to stampede, injuring themselves or damaging property in their desperate attempts to escape the noise.
Let’s do everything we can to protect all animals this New Year’s Eve.
Here’s how you can help keep animals safe and calm:
For Pets:
1. Keep them indoors: Ensure your pets are safely inside. Close all windows and doors to reduce the noise. Even a small rearranged space inside is safer than leaving them outside to face the noise and risk of injury.
2. Secure your home: Double-check that doors, gates, and fences are secure to prevent escapes.
3. Distract and comfort them: Use calming music, TV, or white noise to muffle fireworks. Provide treats or toys to occupy their minds.
4. Stay with them: Your presence offers reassurance. If you can, stay close to your pets during the night.
For Farm Animals:
1. Bring them to safe enclosures: Where possible, bring horses and livestock into secure areas, such as barns or stables, to shield them from the noise.
2. Check enclosures: Inspect fences, gates, and pens to ensure they’re secure. Animals in panic can break through weak spots.
3. Reduce visibility of fireworks: If possible, block their view of nearby fireworks to minimize stress.
4. Reassure them: Spend extra time with nervous animals and keep routines as normal as possible.
Let’s all be extra mindful of every animal this New Year’s Eve. With a little care and preparation, we can save lives and ensure a safer start to the new year for all.
