DIFFERENT FEEDS FOR BREAKFAST AND DINNER?

I was asked to comment on this:

'You should give different types of feed for morning and evening so you horse finds it more interesting'

Actually, no, you shouldn't.

It’s easy for owners to put their human needs onto the horse e.g. their tack needs to be all matching, they need a special treat for their birthday/at Christmas, and they like to have a different breakfast, lunch and dinner.

It is healthier for - and more respectful to - the horse to consider their actual needs.
Given the choice, horses do not eat short, individual meals, but will graze and browse throughout the day and night.

Furthermore they do not seek out different types of feed and eat nothing but that for half an hour - out at pasture they tend to pick and choose the tastiest sprouts of grass, buds on the hedge plus the odd thistle and suchlike.

Horses soon get used to being supplied with tasty meals, and will therefore anticipate their feeds keenly, but it is healthier for them to be fed the same blend of feed in each meal, primarily because this supports a consistent balance of gut microflora.

We tend to feed meals in buckets to ensure the horse eats up the essential nutrients that are missing from forage without wastage, plus this allows more individual dietary requirements to be met, say for example for horses kept in herds.

If you want to make their diet more interesting, you could give access to a variety of plants by planting hedgerows in fields, oversewing wild flowers/herbs in pasture, and/or allowing access to trees (but make sure none are poisonous).

For stabled horses, you could offer more than one type of forage, use a mixed-ingredient compound for horses who need concentrate feed, and/or use enrichment ideas such as feed decanting balls, stuffing slices of carrot into the forage, slow feeders and suchlike.

Feel free to share! 🐴🍏

Today was a bittersweet day. It’s never easy saying goodbye to our equine friends and Mollie is so special to me because she was the first foal to be born on the land at Kingsland Stud.

However, where Mollie has gone to it is definitely not goodbye. She will have the best home with Nicole Gallagher in Sligo and we will be able to drop over to see her and I know Nicole will keep us updated on all her progress. She has landed on her 4 hooves and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this beautiful young mare and talented new owner.

Best of luck with her Nicole!
Mollie, do us proud 🥹
❤️❤️❤️❤️

❌ 𝗙𝗔𝗟𝗦𝗘! Sadly, it's no longer as simple as that. You may have heard the advice to do your winter worming after the first frost. While a frost will help kill off the bot flies, with warmer temperatures continuing further into the year in the UK, we can no longer rely on this old adage when targeting encysted redworm.

❄️ We've spoken to many folks who have had the first frost and are keen to go ahead with their winter wormer, but while temperatures on grazing land remain above 6C, redworm are still active and worming now will increase the risk of reinfection. We need to wait for winter (Dec-Feb) and temperatures to stay consistently below 6C for a few days before tackling encysted redworm. This means either blood testing or treating with an appropriate wormer.

🍂🔬 We're still in autumn now, so if you haven't done a worm egg count in the last three months, or a saliva test for tapeworm in the last six months, then it's time to test! If your autumn test results show a need for treatment then it’s okay to go ahead with an appropriate wormer. You’ll then need to consider encysted redworm in winter as advised in this post.

Our award winning tests and advice help protect thousands of horses every year, so get in touch for free, expert support you can trust.

Lynette’s guidelines
I love seeing how substantially your horses change when in the correct saddle. Does it mean I need to alter or change your saddle more regularly. Yes! Does that mean the saddle wasn't a good fit. Nope! We fit the horse we see on the day and hopefully your horse improves and changes between fits.

How do we help you manage that:
1. Discount codes for Current Clients
2. We swap girths, gullet bars etc rather than make you buy new ones
3. We make alterations on site within your fitting fee
4. We try our very best to let you trade your saddle back in, when necessary, for just 10% off what you paid. Provided it was bought by us and looked after.

What do you need to do:
1. Enjoy your amazing horse
2. Book regular saddle fits!

2 months - after purchasing a new saddle, rehabbing , major workload or routine change
3 months - changing workload, routine, very young horse
6 months - most horses
Annual - on the rare occasion checking annually is adequate, provided the owner knows the signs that may require a fitting sooner.

Isla and Meara absolutely flew around arena xc today. Both are new partnerships with young horses. I can’t stop watching the videos of you both and just so proud of how you have worked hard to establish a wonderful partnership with your horses. The future is bright for you both! Also, I can’t say enough for and Tony who put a lot of faith in me and the process we have gone through since we met in December last year. You have both been so amazing to deal with and have put everything behind your girls to get them to where they are! Well done 👏🏻
