In December, we ran a UK-wide livery survey with 768 yard owners across 81 counties โ€” and the results are... surprising. We knew pricing for livery sevrices was inocnsistent at least but this has made clear how much the prices can vary.

For stables full livery, the highest and lowest prices submitted differ by a staggering ยฃ15,000 over the course of a year. Yesโ€ฆ fifteen thousand pounds for what is supposed to be the same service.

Youโ€™d expect full livery to include โ†’ stable, grazing, 7-day care, hay, and bedding at minimum. But why such a huge difference? Some possibilities include:

โ†’ Location: Prime areas with high property costs, or easy access, or cose to competition centres naturally command higher prices.
โ†’ Facilities: Modern stables, riding facilities, good hacking, and extras on the yard like solariums, hot-wash water systems, can increase costs.
โ†’ Running costs: Larger staff costs, insurance, or maintenance expenses may push prices up, while lower-priced yards may operate with reduced overheads.
โ†’ Professional rider: Experienced riders or trainers may charge more for their expertise, attention to detail, and the added prestige of having your horse under their supervision.

Even without these factors, running costs have shot up for yard owners in recent years, with huge increases in employment costs, utilities, business rates, and โ€” more recently โ€” hay and straw. All of these factors mean many yards have had to raise their prices considerably. Donโ€™t automatically dismiss a yard as โ€œtoo expensiveโ€ โ€” ask why itโ€™s priced that way. Yards that are properly insured, fully compliant, and doing things by the book have to charge more simply to run a sustainable business. Paying a higher price often reflects peace of mind, quality of care, and professionalism, rather than being overpriced.

However, the survey also raises questions about the lowest-priced yards. Yes, some yards are lucky enough to have low running costs and outgoings, but for full livery it can often be difficult to know where these savings can be made. Some may be able to charge so little because they:

โ†’ Treat it less like a professional business
โ†’ Lack correct insurance or safety protocols
โ†’ Do not pay business rates or declare their income fully
โ†’ Do not employ legally
โ†’ Fail to meet expected industry standards
โ†’ Cut costs on maintenance or provisions

The takeaway? When looking for livery โ€” full, part, or DIY โ€” donโ€™t rely on the price alone. Two yards offering โ€œfull liveryโ€ may provide completely different levels of care and facilities.

Ultimately, this survey highlights the importance of asking questions, visiting the yards, and understanding exactly what is included โ†’ so your horse receives the care and environment they deserve.

And if youโ€™re a yard owner โ†’ are you charging enough? Do you know if your business is truly sustainable, or are you inadvertently subsidising the costs of your liveries? When did you last sit down to work out your running costs and check whether what youโ€™re charging is actually viable for you?

Itโ€™s super important to review this regularly, because yards that charge too little can devalue the industry, especially if itโ€™s because corners are being cut โ€” which also undermines those yards that are doing everything properly.

Hi everyone ๐Ÿ‘‹
Our bit fitter Marita has a few appointments available on Thursday the 13th of February.

If anyone would like to get booked in, please use Maritaโ€™s app directly to secure your slot.

I canโ€™t recommend her highly enough โ€” weโ€™ve seen some huge positive changes in horses she has fitted for us here, both in comfort and way of going.

She is fully booked for this Saturday the 31st, and February is already filling fast. Iโ€™m not sure when weโ€™ll have her back again after the 13th, so if itโ€™s something youโ€™ve been considering, this is a great opportunity to get sorted.

Any questions, just shout ๐Ÿ˜Š

Hi folks,
Thank you all for your quick responses to my previous posts โ€” I now have quite a few days booked up. Iโ€™ve had to rearrange some dates due to other commitments, and Iโ€™ve already contacted everyone this affects.

Just a reminder that all appointments must be booked through Equigate. I really struggle to keep on top of messages coming in through email, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook (both my private and work pages). Itโ€™s simply too much to manage across so many platforms, so Equigate is the only place where bookings will be taken.

Thanks so much for your understanding!

Please do feel free to message with any queries you may have, but for booking or rescheduling an appointment, please use Equigate only. This helps me keep everything organised and ensures nothing gets missed.

Correct bit and bridle fitting is so important for horse welfare and performance โ€” a well-fitted bridle allows the horse to communicate comfortably, move freely, and work without pain or restriction.

Earlier this week, after finding out that I had been nominated and shortlisted for Coach of the Year, I had one of those unexpected full-circle moments.

While clearing out her attic, my mum came across a medal from the Royal Agricultural Society of England, dated 2009. It was from the year I was selected as one of five finalists for the Thesis of the Year award.

My tutor had submitted my undergraduate thesis, and out of submissions from across the UK and Ireland, five of us were shortlisted and invited to Stoneleigh Park to present our work to a panel of five judges. It was an incredible honour to even be in the room.

Some of the other shortlisted theses included early, groundbreaking research into wobblers syndrome, involving dissected spines and CT scanningโ€”work that has since contributed to wider understanding in equine science. Being surrounded by that level of talent, curiosity, and innovation was genuinely inspiring.

Finding that medal now, all these years later, felt like a quiet reminder that the passion for learning, coaching, and striving to do betterโ€”for horses and riders alikeโ€”has always been there. To have that echoed again this week through a coaching nomination is something Iโ€™m hugely grateful for.

Sometimes the dots really do connect, even if it takes a while to see how ๐Ÿ’™

โœจ January Winter Warmers โ€“ off to a flying start! โœจ

We had three fantastic lessons on Friday night to kick off our January Winter Warmers. Despite the challenging weather and limited chances to ride lately, every horse and rider performed brilliantly.

The progress since the last session was really noticeable, with riders already ticking off goals theyโ€™ve set for 2026 ๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŽ

Iโ€™m so excited for the remaining three weeks, and there are still one or two spaces available if anyone would like to join us. A perfect way to build confidence, consistency, and momentum through the winter months.

๐Ÿ“ฉ Message me for details or to book a spot.
