🐈 Feline Leukemia Day 🐈

Today marks feline leukemia day, which aims to raise awareness of a virus which affects cats.

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a contagious virus which affects cats. It's spread through close contact such as grooming,biting, shared food bowls and through nursing. It acts by suppressing the cats immune system leaving them more susceptible to infections.

Diagnosis involves running a simple in-house blood test. Symptoms and progression can vary among cats. Some signs include anemia, weight loss, poor coat and weakened immune system.

Unfortunately there is no cure for FeLV so when diagnosed it's recommended to keep them indoors to avoid infecting other cats.

Some ways to help prevent FeLV is through routine vaccination, neutering to avoid fights, testing cats for FeLV before introducing them to a household which already has cats and minimising their time outdoors.

🐈 National Kitten Day 🐈

Today marks National Kitten Day and a chance to celebrate the joy they bring to our lives, and ways to look after them in the early stages of life.

Some key points to keep in mind:
🐾 Routine worming from 2-3weeks of age every 2 weeks up until 3 months of age
🐾 Feed 3 to 4 meals a day from 2 to 4months as they do a lot of growing during this phase
🐾 Vaccinations can start from 8 weeks of age, we start with a primary vaccine and repeat it 3 to 4 weeks later, it's then repeated annually
🐾 Kittens reach adolescence at around 4 to 6 months of age which can be an ideal time for neutering

🐾ID YOUR PET DAY 🐾

1st of July marks id your pet day, which is an important reminder for owners to make sure that their pet can be identified in the case that they ever get lost.

The main types of id include:
🐾 Collar with name tag - include contact number
🐾 Microchip - small chip placed under the skin with a unique id number associated to the animal which is registered to the owner along with contact details.
🐾GPS tracker - will monitor dogs location at any given time

Ensuring contact information is updated on a regular basis is of utmost importance for a safe return of our furry friends!
