𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗣𝗨𝗣𝗣𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗣𝗨𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗗 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗔 𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗚𝗢𝗥𝗚𝗘

Early this morning our team rushed to a river gauge after a call reporting the sounds of puppies crying and screaming through the night.
Our rescue team, headed by Dewa Made, climbed down on ropes and brought up four tiny puppies – two different litters, all abandoned and left to die.

Sadly, this is becoming a daily reality.

In past years, we might receive one or two reports a week of puppies dumped in river valleys, inside compound walls, trapped in wells… But now we are getting many reports every week – sometimes many in a single day.

This is happening more and more. And it must stop.

Fear is driving it: The media is spreading panic about rabies – a disease that is totally preventable through vaccination – and people are abandoning dogs out of fear – fear of rabies, fear of new regulations, fear of punishment.

We also suspect that mother dogs in construction areas are being taken by dog meat traders, leaving puppies behind to starve.

And we simply cannot keep up with the number of animals being discarded – sick and injured animals, blind animals, newborn puppies thrown away like waste.
Opening more shelters is not the solution.

The only sustainable answer is to work within communities – continuing to provide vaccinations, sterilisations, humane education, and support so that dogs are not abandoned in the first place.

BAWA will keep fighting. But we need your help.

Rabies is preventable. Abandonment is not the answer.

Make Your Weekend Count for Bali’s Animals 🧡

As you head into the weekend, imagine this:

A mother dog searching for scraps to feed her puppies.
A loyal village dog scratching at painful skin infections.
A frightened pup wandering the roadside – unvaccinated, unprotected, unsure where to go.

For so many dogs across Bali’s rural communities, this is daily life. No vet care. No vaccinations. No relief from suffering. Without sterilisation and treatment, the cycle continues – generation after generation.

But this weekend, you can help to break that cycle.

This , your kindness can truly save lives, giving a dog safety, health, and the chance at a better future.

For just $35, you can provide one dog with:
✨ Sterilisation
✨ Rabies vaccination
✨ Treatment for parasites and painful skin disease

Instead of one more weekend purchase…Give a gift that heals, protects, and truly lasts.

Every donation helps protect Bali’s animals – and the communities they belong to.

A life we couldn’t save… and why we need Your help…

This very sad, weak dog was reported to BAWA just yesterday.

Despite being found wondering the streets in a busy area, no one seemed to have seen her before or knew where she came from. When our team arrived, we discovered she did have a home – a family who had cared for her for 15 years.

Sadly, she is now too sick and old to operate on and wouldn’t be able to survive the surgery to remove the enormous tumour. With her owners’ consent, we gently helped her pass, free from pain, and laid her to rest with a burial.

She is just one of so many sick animals – on the streets and in family homes – who have no access to treatment.

Every day we respond to heartbreaking cases: broken bones, severe skin disease, TVT, tumours, infections, trauma and suffering that often goes unseen.

BAWA’s ambulance is one of the only lifelines for these animals. But we are run off our wheels – the calls just don’t stop, and we simply can’t keep up.

We know today’s story is a sad one. We save every animal we possibly can. But we desperately need your help to keep our ambulance on the road.

Please support BAWA so we can continue responding to desperate animals who have no one else.

𝗖𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗖𝗧𝗩 – 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻…𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻?
Another mother. Another litter. More lives thrown away.

Intolerance of dogs in Bali is rising – and so are the abandonments. Pregnant, sick, injured, terrified. Newborn puppies and kittens dumped in boxes, bags, doorways. Every single day we get calls about another litter discarded as if their lives don’t matter.

Just days ago, when we truly had no space left, our CCTV recorded a man dumping a mother dog and her 3-day-old puppies at our front door. Our team found them the next morning and took them in.

Shelters are no place for newborns or their mothers. The noise, the stress, the fear – yet we had no choice but to save them.

But the real question remains: why is this increasing?

Bali once lived harmoniously with its dogs. They guarded homes, watched over children, slept under warungs. But things have changed:
• Vet care is too expensive or unavailable.
• Community dogs are no longer allowed where they once lived.
• People fear fines, complaints, and pressure — so they “get rid of” animals.

Dogs once valued are now treated as problems. This is no longer just an animal welfare issue – it’s a social crisis. Even with free sterilisation, vaccines, skin treatment, and food, the tide of abandonment keeps rising.

So we ask: What is the solution? How do we rebuild compassion?

Meanwhile, this mother and her newborns need help now. And BAWA cannot do this without you. Please donate, foster, or adopt.

Together, we can change this — but we need you more than ever.

SAVE BALI DOGS ON GIVING TUESDAY

A global day of generosity is just around the corner, and with it comes a powerful opportunity to make a real difference for Bali’s animals and communities.

In many of Bali’s rural areas, thousands of dogs still struggle without basic veterinary care. Without sterilisation, they continue to produce litters that families cannot support. Without vaccination, they remain vulnerable to preventable diseases like rabies.

But we already know the solution that works.
Where mass vaccination and sterilisation programs are implemented, rabies rates drop sharply, and animal suffering is significantly reduced.

This , we’re inviting you to take a moment to “paws” and make an impact.
Through BAWA’s One Health approach, we deliver essential treatment and community education straight to the villages that need it the most.
• Each vaccination protects a household.
• Each sterilisation stops suffering before it starts.
• Each act of kindness strengthens an entire community.

With a gift of just $30, one dog receives sterilisation, a rabies vaccination, and treatment for parasites, worms, and skin conditions.

Your support today helps build a safer, healthier Bali — for both animals and people.

Thank you for choosing to care. Every contribution truly saves lives.

Temple Talks: Sharing the Bali Heritage Dog!

We were honored to join Further East ( ) – a purpose-driven luxury travel marketplace that connects APAC-focused brands with global buyers – for their new “Temple Talks” series. BAWA had the opportunity to share the story of the Bali Heritage Dog and why protecting this ancient breed is so important.

🐕 A Living Piece of Bali’s Identity
The Bali Heritage Dog is one of the world’s oldest and most genetically distinct dog populations. For thousands of years, these dogs have lived alongside the Balinese people – guarding temples, joining ceremonies, and embodying the island’s cultural heartbeat. Their ancient DNA offers rare scientific insight, while their presence continues to enrich Bali’s traditions today.

This inspiring session allowed us to highlight that Bali is more than beaches, rice fields, and temples – it is also home to a unique native dog whose heritage deserves recognition and protection.

🙏 We’re deeply grateful for the platform to raise awareness and celebrate the profound connection between the Bali dog and Balinese culture.

Here’s to keeping the island’s heritage alive – four paws at a time. 🐾🐾

Get A Headstart for

Giving Tuesday is a global celebration of generosity – a reminder that each of us has the power to create real, lasting change.

Across Bali’s remote villages, thousands of dogs still live without access to even the most basic veterinary care. Unsterilised, they give birth to litters the community cannot support. Left to roam, they remain exposed to preventable diseases like rabies.

But the solution is proven – and it works….

Where mass vaccination and sterilisation programs are in place, rabies cases plummet and animal suffering declines dramatically.

This , we invite you to “paws” and take action.
BAWA’s One Health approach brings life-saving treatment and community education directly into the villages that need it most.
· Every vaccination protects a family.
· Every sterilisation prevents suffering.
· Every act of generosity strengthens an entire community.

For just $30, one dog receives sterilisation, rabies vaccination, and treatment for parasites, worms, and skin disease.

Your support today helps create a safer, healthier Bali – for animals and people.

RAHAJENG RAHINA GALUNGAN LAN KUNINGAN

Galungan marks one of the most sacred days in the Balinese calendar — a time to honor the triumph of light over darkness, and goodness over anything that causes harm.

May this meaningful celebration inspire us all to live with compassion, harmony, and respect for every living being.

From our BAWA family to yours, we wish you a heartfelt Selamat Hari Raya Galungan!

🐾 United in Diversity: Celebrating Bali's and Japan's Heritage Dogs 🇯🇵🇮🇩

Last week, BAWA had the honor of hosting 55 vet students from Kyushu Animal Academy (Japan) and 12 students from Udayana University. An inspiring day of shared learning, compassion, and collaboration. ❤️

One message resonated deeply: Japan has its own six native heritage dogs – the “Nihon Ken” – just like Bali!

In Japan, these six native dog breeds are recognized as National Treasures. Yet even with this protection, some are now critically endangered.

The Kai Ken, Japan’s famous “Tiger Dog”, was especially striking – its brindle beauty mirrors our own "Bali Anggrek Dog”.

Bali Heritage Dog is more than 12,000 years old – one of the world’s oldest and most genetically unique dog lineages.

But today, they face existential threats: Culling & poisoning, rabies and the dog meat trade, unregulated imported breeds, and over-sterilisation of pure native dogs

But we still have time to act. To protect Bali’s ancient native dogs – part of Bali’s culture, identity, and history – BAWA is:

🐾 Prioritising sterilisation of non-native breeds
🐾 Monitoring and safeguarding heritage dog populations and working with communities to protect them
🐾 Providing sanctuary to vulnerable Bali dogs

Please stand with BAWA to protect Bali’s last remaining heritage dogs before it’s too late.🌺

Kyushu x BAWA 🇯🇵🇮🇩🐾

Last week, on November 12th, BAWA had the honor of hosting 55 veterinarian students from the Kyushu Animal Academy (Japan) together with 12 third-year veterinary students from Udayana University. It was a truly inspiring day of sharing ideas, exchanging knowledge, and learning from one another – a beautiful reminder of how collaboration strengthens our collective impact. ❤️

Our main focus was the One Health approach, and we extend our deepest gratitude to all the presenters:

✨ Drh. Karang from the Udayana University One Health Department, for an excellent presentation on Program Dharma / Program Dewata
✨ Drh. Saka from Saka Vet Clinic, Ubud, for generously answering questions about the cases he encounters, the treatments he provides, and the challenges common in veterinary practice

✨ BAWA’s team, including our session on the Pure Bali Heritage Dog

A huge thank-you as well to the translators who helped us bridge English ↔ Bahasa ↔ Japanese – not easy, but so worth it! 🙏

Together, we explored why One Health matters and how, as beautifully expressed by Zefri Alfaruqy, Head of Communications at Kura-Kura Bali: people, animals, and the environment all share the same planet – and the same future. 💚

At the same time, we also held a lively Animal Health Day just next door at the United in Diversity campus. Throughout the day, groups of 30 students at a time observed our veterinarians and vet nurses in action as they carried out sterilisations, vaccinations, and treatments – an incredible opportunity for hands-on learning and open discussion.

We extend our warmest thanks to Drh. Jane from Saka Vet Clinic, who graciously spent time answering student questions about veterinary work in Bali and the realities of daily clinical practice. 🐶

We hope this experience encouraged and inspired all the students who joined us – and that it sparks a future filled with compassion, collaboration, and strengthened animal health across borders. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who made the day such a success!

THANK YOU, PT PERFECT COMPANION INDONESIA! 💛

A heartfelt thank you to PT Perfect Companion Indonesia (.id ) for their incredible generosity in donating over 4,000 kg of dog food to support Bali’s hungry and neglected animals. Your gift ensures that vulnerable dogs in some of the island’s most remote areas will not go hungry.

For dogs who have been surviving on scraps – or nothing at all – this donation means full bellies, renewed strength, and a little more hope. It means mothers can feed their puppies, and elderly or abandoned dogs can find the nourishment they desperately need.

From all of us at BAWA, thank you for standing with us – and for being a true friend to Bali’s dogs 💛
