Bali Grown Aquaponics has been our dream for the past few years now steadily becoming a reality. Much like any innovation, technology or product, simply “having” or “producing” it is not enough as we have found out. Innovation with education and awareness must go hand in hand.
Bali and especially the Ubud area have a multitude of amazing restaurants and retreat centers hosting millions of people each year coming to be immersed in peace, culture, art, yoga, spirituality, and recently quality organic and healthy food for everyone including vegetarians, vegans and raw foodies.
A mere eight years ago it was still hard to find a salad that was “safe” enough to eat, let alone be considered “quality, premium or organic”. The few Island organic farmers that do exist are not even really “organic” but rather pesticide-free growers. Back then, these farmers’ produce was the best one could hope to find in any restaurant.
Since then, times have changed. Awareness of organic, clean foods, raw foods, veganism, and yoga have drastically increased and with it, so has the need to advance the quality of the produce source.
Pesticide-free is not good enough anymore! Within the past few years, a couple of “hydroponic” growers have emerged. This was an obvious upgrade from previous farming resources, but a relatively few established chefs have accessibility to their produce as the island’s hydroponic growers are high-volume producers focused on wholesales to the large market chains and hotels. This again has left our Ubud community without an adequate source of “clean, organic, nutrient-rich and sexy” produce, until now.
The general lack of quality “clean” and real “organic” produce has created a local niche market and opened the door for us to utilize all our collective skill sets in holistic therapies, healing arts, yoga, Ayuraveda, biodynamic farming, urban gardening, and education to create Bali’s first and only commercial aquaponics farm and establish ourselves as local pioneers of “clean food”.
Just because it is Vegan or Raw, DOESN’T mean it is healthy, quality or good! After years of living in the Ubud area and being vegetarians only consuming allegedly “clean, organic or high-vibrational” foods, we found ourselves frequently being sick. We learned through clinical testings that we often had been exposed to E.coli and other parasite infections leaving us bed ridden with high-grade fever for weeks at a time.
On a mission, we set out to visit many of the “local” farms that supplied the area’s “healthy” restaurants and cafes and discovered that they were not even organic at all. Sure, they did not spray pesticides on their crops, but their neighbouring rice farmers did. They all were using the same polluted water from the subak systems and were not even sure about the quality or origin of their seed source.
At last it started making sense to us. From then on, we decided to dedicate our lives to growing our own food, creating enclosed and climate-controlled greenhouses, and building a sustainable aquaponics urban farms and food production facilities so we could keep healthy and live abundantly with a clean plant-based diet here within our Ubud community.
