Villa Kitty was established in March 2011 BUT our beginnings were a small section in a local dog shelter as their 'Cats and Kittens section' which I opened after I was approached to care for three tiny kittens who needed 24 hour hand feeding, in December 2009. Bali's feline population weren't getting much support back then so I ask

ed a good friend in Australia, Robert Elliot, who agreed to pay the wages of two young men to care for the tiny kittens that started to arrive when it became known that we were taking care of them. Robert agreed to pay, not only the wages, but all food, equipment, medical supplies and cleaning products. My niece, Selena Steiner, and her husband, Seungho Kim, both vets supported our work. Our first vet assistants worked tirelessly but, before we knew it, three kittens became sixty and two staff became two vets, five vet assistants and a cook. In October 2010, a generous Melbourne lady and fellow cat lover, Rosemary Fry, saw the work we were doing and, as we were already too big for the shelter, Rosemary agreed to pay for the building of Villa Kitty on a beautiful block of land in Lodtunduh near Ubud. Friends of SCARS, the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society, in Australia, visited as we were setting up and paid for all our white goods, computer and printer, and so much more. Robert covered the lease of the land for ten years and pledged to continue his support. On March 17, 2011, when we picked up our ever-growing family and relocated to this beautiful house, purpose built to shelter and care for Bali’s abandoned cats and kittens. In December, 2011, Robert again paid the lease of the land adjacent to Villa Kitty, this time to build a separate quarantine wing and hospital. The hospital would be divided into two sides one for cats with respiratory problems such as catflu and the other side to care for our cats with intestinal illnesses. With a generous donation from the Parr family, and Robert, we built a truly functional quarantine building. And for our hospital we held our first ever fund raiser in March 2012 at Janet DeNeefe’s INDUS restaurant where we raised half what we needed to build the hospital and Robert paid the remaining costs. From two vet assistants in 2009 and myself, we now have twenty three full time staff and nine part time, including 6 children who come after school to help socialise our kittens and to groom them. Our vet team includes Drh Eka who manages Villa Kitty, Drh Karnata who is our consulting vet and who does all our sterilising, and two junior vets who are still in training. Our nine vet assistants care for our cats and kittens 24 hours a day. Our other staff, includes, our famous cook, Ibu Eka, and her offsider, Bu Jero, six cleaners, a litter tray cleaner, who needs a medal for this tough job, and our two smiley security guards who also do part time work in our garden. One of the nicest parts of the day is when six of the local school children come in, after school, to cuddle our cats and groom them. It is such an important job to socialise the cats so they are ready for adoption. We always hope people will choose the most needy kittens and cats but this is not too often so we believe these young children are worth their weight in gold and are on our payroll. Villa Kitty's staff is dedicated to making a difference to the lives of Bali’s own cats but we need your support to continue to do the good work that we are doing. And don't forget our Sunday lunches under the Mango Tree 12.30pm. We'd love you to join us and your payment.... cuddle our Villa Kitty cats and kittens. Please email [email protected] for further information on how you can help. Thank you again

Do you remember Tolly-Molly? Hit by a speeding vehicle and left with life-threatening injuries, Tolly-Molly was brought to us just in time. One of his eyes was protruding and he had bloody discharge from his eye and nose.

Tolly-Molly was actually taken to two other clinics before arriving at Sunset Vet. He didn’t receive any treatment because of financial constraints, his rescuers meant well but they didn’t have the means to help him.

Once at Sunset Vet, he received medical treatment for his cat flu and surgery to remove his injured eye. After a few weeks he then came to Villa Kitty and has been thriving ever since! 😍😍

Thank you to all those who helped Tolly-Molly in his recovery - our work is only made possible thanks to your continued kindness.

When we received a call about a mother with seven babies at risk of being evicted by the shop owner, we knew we had to bring them to safety 😥.

Our Pak Made and Pak Ketut rushed to their rescue but they were initially only able to get 6 of the kittens and the mother. The seventh kitten was hiding in the ceiling. She spent two long nights on her own before we could reach her. Pak Made and another friend spent hours trying to open a hole big enough for one of them to get in and rescue the little one!

They are all with us now - they will never be alone and uncared for again 💚.

Ibu B-Yanti and her little ones will need ongoing care, along with the other 700 cats and kittens here at Villa Kitty. Rescues like this are only possible because of your support and compassion - will you continue to stand by our side as we save more lives?

From time to time we are asked about our euthanasia policy, especially with paraplegic cats.

We will always euthanise cats who are dying. We never allow cats to suffer but what about our paraplegic cats, we were asked recently, do they have quality of life? Our answer is always come and meet our special needs cats and decide for yourself.

GingerRogers was our first paraplegic cat. Prior to GingerRogers we were guided by outside vets who felt their inability to defecate or urinate by themselves meant it was impossible to care for them. We agreed, for a non veterinarian people, but for our vets this was not an issue. Our vets made the decision with GingerRogers that we could "toilet" him and that he would have a good life!

When GingerRogers arrived at Villa Kitty, Drh Tyas, our senior vet called me over to meet him. One look into this little boy's eyes and we agreed we'd care for him. Then Evie came along two weeks later. Once again, Drh Tyas and her team agreed we could care for little Evie, as well.

You see there is a lot more skill required than flicking the bottoms of kittens who need bottle feeding when they've been taken from their mothers and tossed out.

GingerRogers and Evie spent their day playing in the garden outside my office and I would spend some time each day playing pingpong with GingerRogers - I called him the PingPong wizard. He was amazing. Evie would watch and sometimes put a paw out but she was happy just to watch.

GingerRogers could also climb the tree to the levels above and I remember being shocked at seeing his little face peering at me in my office.

When we moved to our new premises we built this area we called the Special Needs. Since then, we have added nine more paraplegic cats and kittens and a couple have been able to walk after initially believing they would also be paraplegic. Very wobbly walks of course.

We have only euthanised 4 paraplegic cats since then. These decisions are made with care and understanding of the patient's ability to live a good and full life! One cat had been shot in the back and she had difficulty moving about. She had no quality of life and it was only right to allow her peace from her suffering. We know when a paraplegic cat can live a happy life and when it’s best to allow them peace, We make these decisions with our vets and senior staff.

Just like GingerRogers and Evie, all our resident paraplegic cats receive excellent care and live in a loving environment with us. Please visit and like so many who visit these beautiful feline citizens of Bali you will understand.

Our numbers rose drastically between the 24-hour period between the 3rd and 4th of July 😞💔. Villa Kitty received SIXTEEN kittens, 10 of these kittens tested positive to the feline parvovirus, aka panleukopenia, and are now in our Isolation Wards. The other six kittens are in our Suspect Wards as they are showing the symptoms.

The 10 kittens came from the Sayan Markets. This place is notorious as a dumping ground for kittens and puppies, but it is also very dangerous for these tiny little ones due to the parvovirus that can live in the soil for up to 12 months.

It is heartbreaking 💔 for these babies, and the market sellers do their best to care for them, but there is NO hope of saving them when they hit the ground running all over the virus infected markets.

🙌 We need community support to speak out against this practice, but we also need community support to help us vaccinate and sterilise the parents of these little ones.

We will do our best to care for these kittens, we hope we can save their little lives, but we are massively overwhelmed with the numbers of arriving kittens.

PLEASE help us by speaking out in the community about kindness to the feline citizens of Bali and that Villa Kitty will vaccinate and sterilise the stray cats, the compound cats and the neighbours cats free of charge. We are here to help. Please help us help them.

Among the sad news and heartbreaking arrivals, there are also stories of hope. Just like Bubbles’ happy ending 🥰.

Bubbles arrived during B week and her bubbly personality just suited the name Bubbles.

Even though Bubbles has cerebellar hypoplasia - a developmental condition in which the cerebellum of the brain fails to develop properly so her fine motor skills, and her balance and coordination are underdeveloped, she is the epitome of the characteristic of BUBBLES.

As you would have known, Bubbles had been adopted in the past but she was returned.

We have had others ask about her adoption, but due to her disability they were not able to care for her properly and we declined their offers.

When Weiley asked to visit with her youngest child who loves cats, of course we were delighted. We have known Weiley’s youngest daughter since she was born and we know this little one has a love for their feline and canine family members.

They ended up in the Special Needs area and the little one played while all the cats and Weiley watched her. Bubbles wobbled over to them and immediately sat on Weiley’s lap.

And that was that 🤩. A trip home to discuss with the family about the adoption of Bubbles and the rest, as they say, is history. We love to share stories like this one.

Thank you to all those who sponsored Bubbles and helped her receive the care she needed. Your sponsorship played a crucial role in Bubbles’ fairytale.

Today we share heartbreaking news about our very special Skitters 💔.

Skitters arrived THREE years ago, after his carers were able to leave Bali after a long Covid capture. They had called him Kitty, and it was obvious he was very much loved.

Two weeks after they had left him with us, they contacted us and asked if he had bitten or scratched anyone? YES! Was my immediate reply! YES, ALL of us. But as it turned out, by a technique I employed, grabbing him under his tummy and quickly holding him tightly to my shoulder, I never had any issue with his swift paws, claws extended.

Skitters was unpredictable, but he wasn’t malicious. Skitters had a neurological disorder, diagnosed by a cat vet specialist from Australia.

Skitters lived well and was healthy for two years until he contracted cat flu. Due to his condition, we were unable to nebulize him and put him on oral medication, which worked well. However, months later he showed symptoms of FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), and our vets started him on the Molnupiravir program, and again he rallied.

Sadly two months ago, Skitters again showed signs of ill health and he was again put on the Molnupiravir program. As my home is next door to the Special Needs area, there was never a night I did not spend some time with Skitters. It became a ritual.

The second lot of Molnupiravir was not having any effect on Skitter's health. His body was ravaged by this miserable disease and he was dying. All the staff knew he was my special one of the Special Needs. They were looking to me to make the call.

On Saturday afternoon, I called our vets still on duty to confirm this was the correct decision and to allow him peace from his suffering.

At 17.35 Saturday 28 June Skitters suffered no more. We will miss this boy dreadfully. Thank you to all those who sponsored him and helped us give him the care and love he deserved.

In Memory of Skitters, acknowledging our fight to care for the feline citizens of Bali 💚.

Found in a cage under some bamboo, these 6 kittens were living in filthy conditions 💔. Conditions that no animal should ever endure.

Rushed to Sunset Vet in Kuta, they tested positive to the feline panleukopenia virus on arrival and they are now fighting for their lives, with the best medical care possible. One of them also has an infected eye, which hopefully will not require enucleation surgery. We hope these little ones were rescued in time for a second chance .

This story is a stark reminder of how important vaccination and sterilisation are to create a safer and better world for all cats, stray and owned. 🐈 🩺.

✨ Look who it is… Georgette in her forever home! 🏡💕

You might remember this brave little girl - when a rescuer first spotted her, she bolted into the woods and disappeared. We were so worried... but we never gave up.

Our Pak Made searched for hours in thick brushwood until he finally brought her to safety. With love and care, she slowly blossomed and moved into a foster home.

After growing strong and healthy, she returned to us — and that’s when she met the family of her dreams with another one of our rescue kittens, Cosmo. 💘

Now Georgette is living every rescue cat’s dream: safe, adored and cherished.

Thank you to everyone who helped along the way, and to her amazing adopters who gave her the chance of a lifetime 🙏

The numbers speak for themselves… 840 arrivals since January 1st - and it is only June. In March this year we had around 300 arrivals, but in the last three months we’ve simply been inundated! 😰😰

Our Nursery is suffering the most. With 47 kittens currently in our care and one Vet Assistant, we are stretched beyond belief.

Just yesterday we received a call from a couple on holiday who had witnessed three little kittens being tossed off in a field! 💔 Thankfully, they ran to their rescue and the kittens are now safe in our care. If it hadn’t been for them, they wouldn’t be alive today.

We will never say no to an animal in need and we won’t stop taking cats and kittens in. But soon we’ll reach a breaking point. ❗️We need funds to pay our dedicated staff, and we need funds to continue to save lives❗️

Have you ever felt like you are a child again and under the Christmas tree with all the gifts?! 😍

I think Ibu Ayu, Ibu Era, Pasek and I felt just like this as we emptied the bags brought to Villa Kitty filled with every possible gift for the 680 cats and kittens in our care!

Thank you, Vicki, from all of us. This just gave us all so much joy and then seeing each of the cats and kittens love the toys, snuggle up on the blankets AND into the knitted beanies AND the snuggle down on the soft cushions. It was just heartwarm! 💖

Thank you, Vicki. Thank you from all of us, the carers, on behalf of the very happy cats and kittens.

Oh and THANK YOU from the staff who shared the T-shirts!

THANK YOU from the depths of our grateful hearts 💚
