Please, please, please be more conscious and think twice every time you use a plastic product. You may use it only for 15-30 minutes but it lasts for centuries in our oceans and is capable of killing hundreds of marine life.

Do you need that plastic shopping bag? No, you can bring your own reusable bag.
Do you need that plastic cup? No, you can bring your own tumbler.
Do you need that plastic straw? No, you can sip from the glass or use a paper/metal straw.
Do you need that plastic cutlery? No, you can bring your own reusable ones.

"The plastic plugs them up and causes them to go into septic shock. "

It was the World Sea Turtle Day yesterday and one of our island neighbours Scuba Ju**ie Penida is hosting Turtle Week 🐢
If you are in Nusa Penida this week please pop in to see some interesting activities, for example our team from YKK is going to give a presentation about sea turtles and our project mission on Tuesday the 18th. Make sure you don't miss this chance 😉

Is this the world we're living in? A place where tourism overcomes animal welfare, only to bring income for certain group of people and sacrifice the wildlife.

This month we got 3 new sea turtle patients at our centre, and that was why our update is a bit late because we were busy.
First, let us introduce you to Maddalena, a 60 year old green sea turtle who was admitted to our centre 2 weeks ago because she showed buoyancy problem and could not sink for months. Upon complete clinical examination at our centre, apparently she also has cataract in her left eye. This condition is, unfortunately, could not be cured due to the complexity of surgical procedure which is not possible to be done to a sea turtle. However her right eye still have good vision.
Maddalena had started to show significant improvement within the first week after initial treatment. She started to rest and eat at the bottom of her tank, though sometimes she still floats when she gets too active.

Still remember our last week's post about enrichment? Enrichment is something that we put in a wildlife's enclosure to stimulate their natural behaviour and also as something for the animals to play with.
In this video you can watch Hesper, one of our recent Hawksbill patient, playing with a coral that we put in her tank (please watch our previous video to see what happened before this footage was taken).
In the ocean, sea turtles go to "cleaning stations" where fishes and other animals clean their shells and scales from overgrown algae. Sometimes sea turtles also rub their shells against corals to get rid of microorganism and prevent algae growth, very similar to what Hesper does in this video.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Masih ingatkah Anda dengan video kami minggu lalu mengenai enrichment? Enrichment merupakan benda yang kami tempatkan dalam lingkungan satwa liar untuk menstimulasi perilaku alamiah mereka, dan juga sebagai mainan agar satwa tidak bosan.
Di dalam video ini Anda dapat menyaksikan Hesper, salah satu pasien penyu sisik kami, bermain dengan sebongkah koral yang kami masukkan di dalam baknya (silakan lihat video sebelum ini untuk mengetahui apa yang terjadi sebelum video ini diambil).
Di laut lepas, penyu mengunjungi "stasiun pembersih" di mana ikan-ikan dan hewan kecil lainnya membersihkan cangkang mereka dari alga berlebih. Terkadang penyu juga menggosok-gosokkan cangkang mereka di koral agar tidak tumbuh alga berlebih, seperti yang Hesper lakukan dalam video ini.
In this video you can see Hesper, a hawksbill turtle which was one of our recent patients enjoying its tuna feast. But why are the tuna chunks hidden in a coral? Because we make this coral as an “enrichment”. In captive wildlife, enrichment has two main functions: 1. to encourage natural behaviour which the animals normally do in the wild; 2. as a toy so they are not bored while they are held in captivity.
Wild hawksbills have to forage among corals to get their food source, and by hiding the tuna chunks in the coral we are stimulating this behaviour.
Next week, we will post another video to show what other things a sea turtle can do to an enrichment.
PS. The water is not clear because of fish bits and fish blood dispersed in the water. Usually feeding is done 1 hour prior to changing the tank water so our patients will always have clean, fresh sea water.
Apa itu "enrichment"?
Dalam video ini Anda dapat menonton Hesper, seekor penyu sisik yang merupakan salah satu pasien kami menikmati santapan tongkol. Tetapi mengapa potongan tongkol dimasukkan ke dalam celah koral? Karena kami membuat koral tersebut sebagai "enrichment". Enrichment memiliki dua fungsi utama: 1. untuk menstimulasi perilaku natural pada hewan yang dijumpai di alam liar; 2. sebagai mainan agar hewan tidak bosan.
Di alam liar, penyu sisik harus mencapai celah-celah kecil di antara koral untuk mendapatkan makanan, dan dengan memasukkan potongan tongkol ke dalam celah koral kami bertujuan untuk menstimulasi perilaku tersebut.
Minggu depan, kami akan memposting video lainnya untuk menunjukkan hal apa lagi yang seekor penyu dapat lakukan terhadap enrichment.
NB. Air tampak tidak jernih karena adanya potongan ikan dan darah ikan yang larut dalam air. Biasanya penyu diberi makan 1 jam sebelum air bak diganti agar pasien kami selalu mendapat air laut yang bersih.
What could be a better way to start a new year than returning all three of our patients back to where they belong?
After spending 2.5 months in our rehabilitation centre, Penny, Hesper, and Hester had been nurtured back to health and today they were all released back into the sea.
This event was also attended by officials from BKSDA Bali, KKP Nusa Penida, and some volunteers.
Not only sea turtles, but other marine animals also suffer from plastic trash. How much waste are you creating every day? It is time to reduce single use plastics. Thank you to government of Bali for the new regulation prohibiting shops to use of plastic bags starting in 2019.
