The earthquake flattened the village in seconds. Rescuers were losing hope.
On day 2, a faint barking was heard from under a pile of concrete and rebar.
Rescuers dug frantically. They expected to find a person.
Instead, they found a small pocket of air. Inside was a Golden Retriever covered in dust. He wasn't trapped. He could have crawled out.
But he was staying put. Curled up beneath him, injured and terrified, was the family cat.
The dog had used his body to shield the cat from the falling debris. He growled at the rescuers until they gently lifted the cat out first. Only then did he limp out, wagging his tail.
They were the only survivors from their house.
Family is who you protect when the walls come down. 🐕🐈
