"Tíz óra után pár perccel jött egy hír... egy végzetes hír. Megkondultak a harangok. Előbb Pesten, aztán az ország többi területén is elterjedt a hír... Két órán át tartott a harangzúgás. Az egész ország területén zúgtak a harangok.
Budapest gyászba borult, az emberek feketébe öltöztek. Gyászlobogók lengtek mindenhol. Az emberek, a férfiaktól az asszonyokon át a gyerekekig és az öregekig mind zokogtak. Emberek rázták haragosan az ég felé az öklüket. Az Oktogon sarkán egy rokkant katona letépte zubbonyát és könyökben levágott csonka karját mutatva, őrjöngve kiabálta: "Hát ezért?"
Az utcákon ismeretlen emberek borultak egymás nyakába, mások a zokogókat vigasztalták. A rikkancsok hangja vágott bele időnként ebbe a gyászos hangulatba: "Rendkívüli kiadás!" A lapok gyászkeretben jelentek meg, az emberek hangosan olvasták egymásnak a vezércikkeket.
A Múzeum körúton az emberek a Himnuszt kezdték énekelni.
A templomok hamar tele lettek síró emberekkel, papok próbálták vigasztalni az elkeseredett embereket.
Az ország összes italmérése bezárt. Minden zárva volt, csak a harangok zúgtak, siratták az elhunytat. Az iskolában nem tanítottak, a diákok és a tanárok egyaránt siratták az elhunytat.

"A few minutes after ten o'clock came the news... a fatal news. The bells rang. First in Pest, then in the rest of the country... The bells rang for two hours. The bells rang throughout the country.
Budapest was plunged into mourning, people dressed in black. Mourning flags waved everywhere. People, from men to women to children and the elderly, were all sobbing. People shook their fists angrily at the sky. At the corner of the Oktogon, a disabled soldier tore off his tunic and, showing his severed arm at the elbow, shouted frantically: "So why?"
Unknown people in the streets threw themselves on each other's necks, others consoled the sobbing. The sound of the hooves occasionally cut into this mournful atmosphere: "Extraordinary edition!" The papers appeared in mourning frames, people read the editorials aloud to each other.
On the Museum Boulevard, people began to sing the National Anthem.
The churches were soon filled with weeping people, priests tried to console the distraught people.
All the liquor stores in the country were closed. Everything was closed, only the bells were ringing, mourning the deceased. There were no classes in the school, students and teachers alike mourned the deceased.
