Harmonization of Canine Genetic Testing: The role of IPFD and the DogWellNet Platform
In a world of increasingly widespread use of genetic testing in cynology, the need for standardisation and mutual alignment of testing results continues to grow. It is precisely with this goal in mind that the International Partnership for Dogs (IPFD) was established.
One of the most important projects of the IPFD is the Harmonisation of Genetic Testing for Dogs (HGTD) an initiative aimed at introducing transparency, comparability, and reliability in genetic testing on a global scale. The DogWellNet platform serves as an open resource for breeders, veterinarians, and laboratories, providing access to information on:
• validated genetic tests and their associated diseases,
• reference scientific publications,
• laboratories that meet specific professional criteria,
• interpretation of results for individual dog breeds.
AnimaLabs has been participating in IPFD harmonisation initiative for many years, actively contributing to the collective effort of aligning practices among laboratories. Through this collaboration, we support the shared goal of advancing genetic science, improving canine health, and promoting animal welfare worldwide. More info at: https://shorturl.at/6Nvjs
The goal of this harmonisation is not only to improve the overall quality of genetic testing, but also to assist breeders in making better and more informed breeding decisions, while reducing the risk of inconsistent or inaccurate interpretation of results between different laboratories.
Laboratory participation in this program implies regular data sharing, confirmation of the testing methods used, and adherence to guidelines that promote scientific accuracy and transparent communication with users.
Collaboration between laboratories and the IPFD represents an important step toward standardised and reliable genetic testing on a global level, benefiting both dogs and the breeders and owners who care for them.
