Her legacy will continue to inspire and guide us in the field of animal behaviour and training. Our thoughts go out to all Karen’s loved ones, colleagues and peers.

'Humans seem to be hardwired to want to get someplace by the shortest, most direct path. When it comes to working with a fearful dog, however, it’s best to accept that you’re going to be taking the scenic route. You should prepare for setbacks and breakdowns, and you may have to take an alternate route every once in awhile.

The fact is, setbacks are going to happen and they’re perfectly normal when it comes to our fearful dogs. But that doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Even in the worst case scenario, you’re likely not going to go back to the place you started. If you stay the course, you’ll be gaining ground and moving forward toward your goal. So when detours happen, acknowledge them but don’t let yourself be discouraged by them.'

ZAKON O ZAŠTITI ŽIVOTINJA PROŠAO DRUGO ČITANJE
(saborski zastupnici jednoglasno podržali Konačni Prijedlog Zakona o zaštiti životinja)

Napokon možemo odahnuti! Skloništa u kojima se ubijaju životinje otišla su u ropotarnicu povijesti. Podnijeti su još neki amandmani koji će, ako budu prihvaćeni, još više poboljšati Zakon.

Evo nekih prijedloga:

- Zbog različitih financijskih mogućnosti lokalnih zajednica, traži se da i županije također moraju sudjelovati u pokrivanju troškova osnivanja i rada skloništa.

- Željko Kraljičak, državni tajnik Ministarstva poljoprivrede, podsjetio je na novost da sredstva od kazni koje naplate komunalni redari sada idu u proračun jedinica lokalne samouprave, te da će se sredstva moći osigurati ako će se kazne zaista i početi naplaćivati.

- O provedbi Zakona na terenu isto misli i Anka Mrak-Taritaš u ime Kluba zastupnika GLAS-a i HSU-a koja je ukazala i na očigledan problem preopterećenosti komunalnih redara kojima su dati poslovi koje je prije obavljala veterinarska inspekcija. U tom smislu smatra da je nužno da se u provedbu Zakona aktivno uključe veterinarska inspekcija i veterinari.

- Izjasnila se za zabranu borbi bikova, a amandman za zabranu je podnio i zastupnik Marin Škibola.

- Veljko Kajtazi u ime Kluba zastupnika nacionalnih manjina, Stjepan Kovač, Klub zastupnika Hrvatske narodne stranke – liberalni demokrati i Klub zastupnika GLAS-a i HSU-a predali su amandman da i jedinice lokalne samouprave mogu propisati kastraciju kako bi se smanjio broj nezbrinutih životinja, a time i pritisak na skloništa.

- Kajtazi očekuje od ministra Tolušića da odmah krene naredbom o obaveznoj kastraciji u romskim naseljima Međimurske županije.

- Kajtazi je predložio i amandman kojim se traži registracija svih uzgajivača životinja, neovisno o broju rasplodnih ženki.

- Klub zastupnika Hrvatske narodne stranke – liberalni demokrati i Klub zastupnika GLAS-a i HSU-a podnijeli su amandman da se životinje uzgojene za korištenje u pokusima ponude na udomljavanje.

- Predrag Matić, Klub zastupnika Živog zida i SNAGA-e i Klub zastupnika GLAS-a i HSU-a zatražili su amandmanom zabranu organiziranja natjecanja konja u povlačenju trupaca (tzv. šlajs).

- Ova dva kluba predala su i amandman da se mačke i psi u lovištima smatraju izgubljenim ili napuštenim životinjama koje su lovci dužni zbrinuti sukladno Zakonu o zaštiti životinja, a ne ubijati ih.

- Amandman o zabrani okrutnog hvatanja štetnika ljepilom podnio je Klub zastupnika Živog zida i SNAGA-e.

"A short, to the point blog on where the domesticated dogs we now share our lives came from.

Dogs are often compared to wolves when talking about behaviour (and feeding) but the truth is that dogs evolved separately to wolves and therefore have different behavioural traits, enrichment/environmental needs and dietary requirements.

Dogs are only as similar to wolves as we are to Chimpanzees. Which is not very much when you look at our behaviour, diet etc compared to Chimps.

We need to stop comparing our dogs to wolves and start appreciating them for what they are - dogs."
