天氣開始炎熱，又是時候提醒各主人在水域附近時，需時刻提高警覺。 在夏天雨季期間，尤其是遠足時，在有污染的溪澗、水坑、瀑布、河流中嬉戲、或飲用溪水都有機會使狗隻受到感染。受感染的狗隻可以通過尿液將這種疾病傳播給其主人及家人。鈎端螺旋體病徵可以有所不同，從無症狀到輕度不適再到重病，甚至死亡。常見症狀可以包括發燒、昏睡、發抖、肌肉酸痛、虛弱、口渴和增加排尿量、嘔吐、腹瀉以及黃疸（皮膚泛黃，眼睛周圍的白色和粘膜）。鈎端螺旋體病可導致腎臟和肝臟衰竭，如果儘早治療，可以增加痊癒機會。即使狗隻能康復過來，仍然存在對腎臟或肝臟造成永久性損害的風險。最有效預防鈎端螺旋體的方法是接種鈎端螺旋體病疫苗，避免狗隻於水域附近嬉戲及飲用溪水。如果您懷疑狗隻身體不適，請儘快求醫。專科獸醫醫院急症服務24小時全年無休。

As the weather is getting hotter now, it is time to remind dog owners to be vigilant when their dogs are around water areas. Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria called Leptospira, which is spread by rat urine. Dogs can be infected when playing and drinking out of tainted streams, puddles, waterfalls and rivers during Hong Kong’s rainy season in the summer, especially while hiking. Infected dogs can also spread this disease to their owners and family members through their urine. Signs of leptospirosis can vary, from no symptoms to mild illness to severe illness and death. Common symptoms may include fever, lethargy, shivering, muscle soreness, weakness, increased thirst and urination, vomiting, diarrhea and jaundice (yellowing of the skin, whites around the eyes, and mucous membranes). Leptospirosis can cause kidney and liver failure, with chances of survival increased if the disease is treated early and aggressively. Protect your dog by vaccinating against Leptospirosis and preventing your dog from drinking or playing around water areas.
