🐹 本週病例：天竺鼠 Banana 🍌

Banana 是一隻 5 歲、未絕育的雌性天竺鼠，主人發現牠的乳頭異常變大，因此帶牠到本院檢查。
在臨床檢查中，我們觀察到明顯的乳頭角化過度（hyperkeratosis），以及尾側腹部有腫塊。

經過適當的診斷檢查，包括 X 光及超聲波檢查，最終確認為子宮腫瘤性病變。

🩺 治療
Banana 接受了成功的卵巢子宮切除手術（ovariohysterectomy），即同時切除子宮及卵巢。

💚 術後恢復
手術後僅 一小時，Banana 已經開始有食慾地進食乾草，恢復情況非常理想 — 正如影片最後所見。

🔍 天竺鼠的子宮腫瘤
天竺鼠最常見的子宮腫瘤包括 平滑肌瘤（leiomyoma）、平滑肌肉瘤（leiomyosarcoma） 及 腺癌（adenocarcinoma）。早期症狀可能包括 乳頭腫大或結痂、腹部脹大、荷爾蒙改變、陰道分泌物或出血、精神沉鬱及食慾下降。及早進行卵巢子宮切除手術 是首選治療方式，最好在出現嚴重併發症之前進行，例如 子宮感染（膿宮）、陰道出血、轉移、厭食或全身性疾病。

✨ 及早發現，可以拯救生命。細微的改變同樣重要。

🐹 CASE OF THE WEEK: Banana the Guinea Pig 🍌

Banana, a 5-year-old intact female guinea pig, was brought to our clinic after her owner noticed unusually enlarged ni***es.
During the consultation, we observed marked ni**le hyperkeratosis and a caudal abdominal mass.

After performing the appropriate diagnostic tests, including X-rays and ultrasound, we confirmed the presence of a uterine neoplastic mass.

🩺 Treatment
Banana underwent a successful ovariohysterectomy, a surgical procedure in which both the uterus and ovaries are removed.

💚 Recovery
Just one hour after surgery, Banana was already eating hay with a good appetite and recovering remarkably fast — as you can see in the video at the end.

🔍 Uterine neoplasia in guinea pigs
The most common uterine tumors in guinea pigs are leiomyomas, leiomyosarcomas, and adenocarcinomas. Early signs may include enlarged or crusted ni***es, abdominal enlargement, hormonal changes, vaginal discharge or bleeding, lethargy, and reduced appetite. The treatment of choice is early ovariohysterectomy, ideally performed before severe complications develop, such as uterine infection (pyometra), vaginal bleeding, metastasis, anorexia, or systemic illness.

🐹✨ Shu Shu’s Story

Shu Shu, a 1-year-old intact female golden hamster, presented to our clinic with a 3 cm mass located in the ventral neck region. After appropriate pre-anaesthetic testing, surgical excision of the mass was performed, and the tissue was submitted for histopathological analysis.

Histopathology revealed a plasmacytoma infiltrating the salivary gland (slide to the right to see the image!), which was completely excised. 💪
While very rare in other species, salivary gland plasmacytomas have been repeatedly reported in Syrian hamsters, suggesting a species predilection for this unusual neoplasm. Interestingly, retrospective studies have shown that these tumours are commonly located in the ventral neck region in Syrian hamsters, as in Shu Shu’s case.

Shu Shu recovered perfectly from surgery, has gained weight, and is now back home—happy, bright, and enjoying life with her owner. 🐹💛

Early assessment and thorough diagnostics remain key, even in our smallest patients.

鼠鼠（Shu Shu）是一隻 1 歲、未絕育的雌性敘利亞倉鼠，因為頸部腹側出現一個約 3 公分的腫塊而到本院就診。完成適當的麻醉前檢查後，我們進行了腫塊的外科切除，並將組織送交病理組織學分析。

病理結果顯示為侵犯唾液腺的漿細胞瘤（向右滑動即可查看圖片），且已完全切除。💪
雖然這類腫瘤在其他物種中非常罕見，但唾液腺漿細胞瘤在敘利亞倉鼠中已有多次報告，顯示此物種對這種罕見腫瘤可能具有特異傾向。有趣的是，回顧性研究指出，敘利亞倉鼠的造血系統腫瘤常發生於頸部腹側區域，與鼠鼠的情況一致。

鼠鼠術後恢復非常良好，體重增加，現已回到家中，和主人一起快樂、健康地生活。🐹💛

即使是最小的病患，及早評估與完整診斷仍然至關重要。

🦎💙 牙仔（Nga Jai）嘅康復之路 💙🦎

牙仔係一條 雄性六角恐龍（Axolotl），嚟到 ExoVet 時已經 接近兩個月冇進食，同時出現明顯 腹部腫脹。
對六角恐龍嚟講，呢啲情況 絕對唔正常，往往代表體內出現嚴重問題。

臨床檢查發現，牙仔腹腔內有 大量液體積聚（腹水）。
透過超聲波檢查，我哋見到 明顯腹腔炎（Coelomitis）、腸道內有氣體，同時肝臟出現異常變化。
抽取並分析腹水後，證實當中有 細菌球菌（cocci）存在，幫助我哋作出明確診斷。

🩺 診斷結果：
細菌感染引起嘅腹水及腹腔炎。

治療方面，我哋為牙仔安排咗 合適嘅抗生素治療，同時配合 輔助餵食，確保佢喺康復期間有足夠營養支持。

💚 好消息係——
經過一段時間嘅治療同主人細心照顧，牙仔已經 完全回復正常狀態：
✔️ 腹脹消失
✔️ 精神同活動力回復

✔️ 而家已經可以自己主動食嘢

💙🦎 Nga Jai’s road back to health 🦎💙

Nga Jai, a male axolotl, was brought to ExoVet after almost two months of anorexia and progressive abdominal bloating. These signs are never normal in axolotls and often indicate a serious internal problem.

During his consultation, we found severe fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites). Ultrasound revealed marked abdominal inflammation (coelomitis), gas in the intestine, and changes to the liver. Analysis of the abdominal fluid showed bacterial cocci, helping us reach a clear diagnosis.

🩺 Diagnosis:
Bacterial ascites associated with coelomitis.

Treatment focused on targeted antibiotics, anti-microbial therapy, and assisted feeding to support recovery while his digestive system rested.

💚 The result?
With time, correct treatment, and committed home care, Nga Jai made an excellent recovery.
He is now back to normal body condition, active, comfortable in the water, and—most importantly—eating by himself again.

📌 For axolotl owners:
Persistent bloating, floating, or loss of appetite should never be ignored. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can be life-saving in amphibians.

🐦✨ Seven, 呢位細細粒嘅 日本綠繡眼，送到我哋診所嗰陣只得 6.9 克。
尾巴上下郁（tail bobbing）、呼吸困難、無精打采，幾乎唔肯食嘢……
老實講，當刻真係覺得佢隨時都會撐唔住 💔

做身體檢查時，我哋發現一個好重要嘅線索 ——
肝臟似乎大到可以隔住皮膚見到。
隨即安排 X-ray，結果確認係 肝臟腫大（Hepatomegaly）。

🐛 對雀形目雀鳥嚟講，呢個情況好危險
其中一個最需要即刻處理嘅原因，就係 肝臟球蟲症（Hepatic coccidiosis）。

📚 咩係肝臟球蟲症？
呢種係由寄生蟲引起嘅疾病，會嚴重影響細雀嘅肝臟功能。
常見症狀包括：
• 快速消瘦
• 無精神、唔郁
• 呼吸困難
• 如果唔及時治療，死亡率好高

所以我哋即刻開始治療：

🐦✨ Seven, this tiny Japanese White-eye, weighing only 6.9 grams, arrived at our clinic in critical condition.
Tail bobbing, severe respiratory distress, apathy, and barely eating — honestly, it felt like he could slip away at any moment 💔

During the physical exam, we noticed something worrying: a possible liver enlargement visible through the skin. An X-ray quickly confirmed our concern — hepatomegaly.

In passerine birds like White-eyes, one condition immediately raises red flags: hepatic coccidiosis.

🦠 What is hepatic coccidiosis?
It’s a parasitic disease caused by coccidia that specifically affects the liver of small passerine birds.
• Rapid weight loss
• Weakness & apathy
• Breathing difficulties
• High mortality if untreated

Because of how serious this condition can be, we started treatment immediately — anti-parasitic therapy, force-feeding, and hepatoprotective support.

💚 With the incredible dedication of the owner, the resilience of this little fighter, and a lot of teamwork, something amazing happened…

After 1–2 weeks, he slowly found his way back to life 🌱
We also added milk thistle seeds to his diet — a natural source of silymarin, the active compound found in many liver-protective medications.

📈 The results?
✔️ Liver size significantly reduced
✔️ Weight nearly doubled
✔️ Bright eyes, strong flight, healthy appetite

Lily’s Story 🐰💛
Lily, a 3-month-old lop rabbit, had just been adopted when her new family noticed something wasn’t right — she was quiet, drinking lots of water, and not playful.

On examination, Lily was slightly underweight and had pain in the front part of her abdomen.
🔬 F***l exam revealed coccidia, and blood work showed elevated liver enzymes.
An abdominal ultrasound, CT scan, and liver cytology confirmed the diagnosis: coccidial cholangitis, a liver infection caused by this parasite.

💊 With prompt treatment and careful monitoring, Lily made a full recovery!
Follow-up ultrasounds showed her liver completely healed — and today she’s back to her energetic, curious self.

💡 Bunny tip: Coccidia are common in young rabbits, especially after stress (like rehoming). Routine f***l checks for new pets can catch problems early!
