西蒙有機農莊 Simon's Organic Farm 記錄我爸爸的有機種植完夢計劃。

This is a record of my dad's post-retirement organic farming endeavour.

我爸爸在新界鄉村長大，雖然長大後搬到市區工作，但種田一直是他的心願和未了夢。幾年前，他退休了，就開展了這個完夢計劃。這是一個遲來的記錄。

注：有不少網友詢問關於購買有機農作物的事，在這裡想交代一下。爸爸這片農地種的蔬菜水果數量和品種有限，所以主要是自家吃，有多都是送給親朋戚友，沒有在賣，不好意思！

This is a record of my dad's organic farming endeavour after retirement a few years ago. My dad grew up in a village in the New Territories in Hong Kong, and it's always been his dream to farm like his family did when he was a kid. He made this dream a reality a few years ago, and this is a belated record of his journey.

大家對 “有機” 應該都有一定的興趣，才會來這個專頁吧！這幅圖是美國 Environmental Working Group (EWG) 給消費者的購物指南，列出了哪些蔬菜水果最應該買有機的（左邊），哪些比較少農藥，可以買普通的（右邊）。希望可以幫到大家！

Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies that protect global and individual health, comes up with a list for grocery shoppers every year regarding the most important food items to buy organic. The left column contains items which contain the most pesticides (when grown conventionally), while the right column contains items which contain the least pesticides. For your reference! :)

有機種子在美國很容易買到，所以之前給爸爸帶了一些，照片中的 Heirloom black plum tomatoes 就是用其中的種子種的。但爸爸說，種了出來味道不太好！:S

Heirloom 的意思是復古，就是最原始的番茄品種，即純種番茄。由純正單一的番茄種子栽培而成，不經雜交或配種，形狀大小顏色味道個個不一，但味道最原始，多汁兼肉質細嫩豐盈。

Organic seeds are easily available in the States, so I got some for Dad a while ago. The heirloom black plum tomatoes pictured in this series are grown with some of those seeds. 朋友八月幫忙帶回港的有機粟米種子，在田裡長大了。還未有粟米，但可看到粟米的雄花和雌花。花有什麼好看呢？其實雄花和雌花是粟米結果的關鍵。

粟米的花粉無法自行結成果實，因此必須靠雄花和雌花互相受粉才能結果實。粟米的雄花會散佈黃褐色的花粉。雌花大約長在莖的中間位置，等到上面的雄花粉末掉在它的身上，花粉黏在雌花的前端，它就會「授粉」，也就是受精，開始長出粟米。

A friend helped us bring some organic seeds back to HK in August, and among them were some corn seeds. There isn't any corn yet, but the male and female flowers are there already, and hopefully we'll have some corn later.
Corn is a monoecious plant, meaning that it grows its male and female flowers on the same plant. The pollination of corn involves getting pollen from a male flower to land on a female flower, which leads to development of ears full of kernels. The male flower of a corn plant is called the tassel, while the ear with its corn silk is the female flower.

Luffa / loofah.
Luffa may be known in the western world mostly as scrubbing sponges that are used in bathrooms and kitchens. The young luffa fruit is eaten in southeast Asian cuisines as a vegetable, especially in the summer.
In the pictures, you can see luffa and its flowers. The flowers are night blooming, so in the picture they have already bloomed.

今年夏天，田裡只有兩個節瓜收成。每個大概40cm長。節瓜和冬瓜的分別在於節瓜是長而幼的，冬瓜則是肥短的。（市面賣的冬瓜，大多沒有毛，但有些冬瓜是有毛的，特別是未收成的時候）

There were only two hairy gourds ('jit gua' in Cantonese) in the harvest this year, and each was about 40cm long.
The difference between hairy gourd and winter melon, apart from their size, lies in the shape - hairy gourds are longer and thinner than winter melons. (I'm stating this because, while most winter melons you can buy are hairless, there are some which are hairy just like hairy gourds, especially before they're harvested.)

『曇花一現』大家都應該聽過，意思我也不用多解釋，就是美好事物轉眼即逝的意思。曇花確實是轉眼即逝的，很難捕捉，因為它都是晚上開的，早上無論你有多早，都捕捉不到它盛開的一面。

題外話，曇花一現英文如何表達呢？（不好意思，技癢）如果是形容人的成就，可以用 "a flash in the pan", "a one-hit wonder", "a one-time blip" 等詞。簡單來說，大部分情況都可用 "short-lived" 表達，但就沒有本來 idiom 的味道了。當然，做句要講 context，以上都只是個別情況可以用的，要看前文後理。

This is a kind of night-blooming cereus. Night-blooming cereus is a common name for many flowers that bloom at night, and other names that are common for this kind of night-blooming flower include Christ in the cradle (or manger), queen of the night... It is really hard to capture the blossom in its full bloom, as it only opens up in the middle of the night. The pictures show the 'before' and 'after' states of the blossom.

百香果有很多種，這種未熟的時候是綠色的，熟了就會變黃色。變黃以後要快點摘下來，不然太熟自己掉到地上，就會變酸，有說是因為掉在地上會震動到囊，囊皮剝離就會酸。另外的做法，是舖一層吊網在下面，避免成熟果實掉落地上變酸。要分辨有沒有變酸，可以搖一搖果實，酸的搖都會有聲音。

There are many kinds of passion fruit, and this kind is light green when unripe, and turns yellow when it is ripe. It is important to pick the fruit in time when it is ripe, as it would turn sour if it becomes too ripe and drops onto the ground. Some farmers also put a net under the fruits to catch them when they fall. Shake the fruit to tell if it has turned sour; it shouldn't make any sound if it is sweet.

Turmeric has been a 'superfood' since ancient times. What makes it different is a substance called curcumin, which is useful in treating many health conditions. Turmeric is therefore said to be helpful in preventing cancer, alleviating inflammation, keeping diabetes under control, aiding digestion, lowering cholesterol, boosting the immune system, and many more. It should be noted that pregnant women should control their consumption of turmeric.

黃薑花。很多人都只見過黃薑粉（超市買袋裝或瓶裝的），它是咖哩主要的原料之一，但你見過黃薑花嗎？除了花外，葉和莖都有淡淡的香味。東南亞會把花入饌，但不清楚他們怎樣料理。

Turmeric flower.
Apart from the flower itself, the leaves and stalks also have a mild aromatic scent. The flower is edible, and I think it's cooked in southeast Asian cuisines, but I have no idea how it's cooked.
