Spring belongs to the Wood element and is linked to the Liver, which governs the smooth flow of Qi. This is the season to nourish and protect the liver. Remember to "keep warm in spring" (春捂), especially when the weather is still unstable.
Bitterness help support the liver, such as red dates, Chinese yam, carrots, bamboo shoots, spinach, goji leaves, cherries, strawberries, and papaya. Chrysanthemum and rose flowers are great for soothing the liver and relieving stress.
A touch of Qi-tonifying herbs like astragalus (Huang Qi) and codonopsis root (Dang Shen) in soup can boost immunity.
