QQ, a lively and loving 12-year-old Corgi, came to us with a persistent cough that didn’t respond to medication. After Dr.Wietz’s careful evaluation, an X-ray revealed a concerning lump in his lungs. We performed a biopsy under ultrasound guidance, and the results confirmed cancer.
To understand the extent of the disease, QQ underwent a CT scan, which showed that the cancer had spread across several lobes of his left lung, affecting a large portion of lung tissue. Thankfully, no spread was detected elsewhere in his body, giving us a clear path forward: surgery to remove the affected lung lobes.
QQ was prepped with care for his open chest surgery. He was placed on a drip with all the necessary pain medications, and his chest wall nerves were numbed with local anesthesia to ensure he felt no pain. During the surgery, we discovered that the cancer was tightly adhered to the surrounding structures near his lungs and heart. Using specialized instruments, we carefully removed these adhesions and controlled the bleeding.
The entire left lung was affected and had to be removed. Despite the complexity, the surgery went smoothly! QQ’s chest wall was closed, and a chest drain was placed to remove any fluid. He recovered beautifully, eating soon after the procedure and showing us his incredible resilience.
QQ was stable enough to go home just a few days after surgery—without needing any extra oxygen! His breathing was strong, his appetite was great, and he made an amazing recovery. Two weeks later, we removed his sutures, and QQ looked as if nothing had happened at all. He was back to his cheerful, playful self, bringing joy to everyone around him!
Coughing is common in dogs and can have many causes, but persistent coughing warrants a closer look. In some cases, like QQ’s, early detection of lung cancer can lead to successful treatment. While X-rays are a good starting point, CT scans are essential for identifying the spread and planning surgery.
QQ’s story is a testament to the power of early diagnosis, advanced veterinary care, and a brave little dog’s fighting spirit!🩷
