There was a time when guava was every child’s fruit. Sweet, tangy, picked straight from the tree, eaten under the sun with friends. Backyards in Pampanga and across the Philippines had them everywhere. They were part of growing up.

But now, as highlighted in Threads, the trees are almost gone. A whole generation — Gen Y and Gen Z — most of them grow up without even knowing how guava tastes fresh from a branch. In place of our native trees, we see imported guavas sold in markets, bigger but lacking the soul of our childhood fruit.

Meanwhile, in South America, guavas are celebrated. They’re made into juices, pastries, and candies — embraced as a symbol of pride. Here, we cut them down, dismissing them as too ordinary.

If fireflies lit our nights, guavas flavored our afternoons. Both are fading from memory. What else are we willing to erase from our children’s world?

Maybe it’s time to bring the guava trees back — in backyards, in gardens, in communities. A small act of planting could restore a taste, a memory, a piece of who we are.

🌴On World Coconut Day we celebrate the Tree of Life 🌴a gift that nourishes body, mind, and planet.

Across Guyana and the Caribbean, coconuts are part of everyday life. The oil is used for cooking, the water for hydration, and the flesh for food. Beyond the kitchen, coconut oil moisturizes skin and hair, supports immunity, aids digestion, and can even be processed into biodiesel.

At The Rs Farm, coconuts also play a playful role. often gives dried coconuts to the young farm dogs. They’re the best husk removers in town! 🥥🐕🥥 Just be aware their teeth are no joke when they get to work on those husks.

From serious health benefits to simple joys, the coconut truly lives up to its name as the Tree of Life. 🌺Learn more about the beauty of coconut flowers here:🌺🥥

Emancipation Day. Once called August Monday in Guyana, marks the end of slavery, declared in 1834 but only fully realized in 1838 after four more years of forced apprenticeship. It’s not just a holiday. It’s memory. Resistance. The taste of cassava, coconut, pepper, yam, and okra. A legacy rooted in the land and carried through food.

Who still remembers when we called this August Monday in Guyana?
