Santorini Animal Welfare Association - SAWA

Santorini Animal Welfare Association - SAWA Santorini Animal Welfare Association "SAWA" is a non-governmental, non-profit making organization, founded in 1993.

The Santorini Animal Welfare Association – SAWA is a non-governmental, non-profit making organization, founded in 1992 by active and devoted animal lovers of the island and abroad. Our purpose is to protect the island’s animals - ranging from stray dogs and cats to abandoned donkeys and mules, care for their wellbeing and become an advocate to their rights. In close cooperation with the Municipali

ty of Thira and the local vet, we insures that a great majority of stray animals are neutered and spayed, vaccinated, treated in case of injury, disease or poisoning and if possible re-homed in Greece or abroad. Moreover, SAWA oversees the implementation of the “Code of Practice” for all donkeys and mules engaged in the Bay of Fira and is constantly making efforts towards the mitigation of their health and working conditions.

🦷Healthy Teeth, Happy Life! Curtis and Martin from the 🇬🇧British Association of Equine Dental Technicians spent a week of shelter life with us at SAWA and gave all our 30 equine residents the necessary dental care. These treatments are very vital especially for the older animals that cannot chew properly and end up losing lots of weight as they cannot take in all the essential nutrients. Between the gentle and easy going, older donkeys and the more challenging, younger horses these guys had their days full. This is the second visit of the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians to our shelter and we are extremely grateful that they reached out to us and took the time to plan and realize this trip for the sake of these amazing retired animals who have just kept offering a lifetime of service to Santorini. A big thank you from all of us and we are really looking forward to seeing you again next year!🙏

🌼Happy Labour Day!🌸 On this gloomy and unusually cold 1st of May let's not forget to celebrate the rights of probably some of the toughest workers on our planet ...🌍🫏🐎 Donkeys, mules and horses used for carrying, tourists and building materials in many destinations worldwide. The mitigation of poor working and living conditions of these animals consist an ongoing battle unequally fought as they are merely seen and treated as soulless, replaceable machines💔 This year we chose Sifis to represent them on the 1st of May... This gentle old donkey who was handicapped for life while working may not be with us next Labour Day but he has stolen the hearts of everyone with his stoic, loving nature of forgiveness and his tireless will to keep going. Please remember!!!!,NO FORM of RIDING ANIMALS in massive tourist destinations like Santorini can ever be regarded as sustainable, it is not a sport, these creatures have to endure an endless treadmill for the price of a selfie... Be a responsible traveler and not just another tourist! Show your respect to these creatures who have literally hauled the weight of this island on their backs...

🆘If you are currently on the island please keep an eye for this stray female dog. She was spotted yesterday in a real bad shape on the last leg of the trail going from Fira to Oia. If you see her you can contact us also via what's app. 00306981489950. Thank you!

🎂Wishing a very Happy Birthday to this guy- Steve Small who traveled all the way from Canada 🇨🇦to experience 6 weeks of Shelter life and enjoy the company of his brother- our one and only Dave- in turn he become for us atrue life savior 🛟 as winter is always the time of the year we are mostly in need of help. Steve just dropped in the every day, non stop routine and blended so well with the animals that it truly felt like he had always been here. He experienced the worse face of a 🌪️⚡Mediterranean winter and the best💓 that all our loving residents could offer! He is already missed by all- four legged and two- and we are looking forward to his next crossing over to Santorini! Happy Birthday Steve and a big thank you from all your shelter buddies! 🐶🐱🐺🐹🐰🐷🐴🐔🐣🦆🦜
