Santorini Animal Welfare Association - SAWA Santorini Animal Welfare Association "SAWA" is a non-governmental, non-profit making organization, founded in 1993.

The Santorini Animal Welfare Association – SAWA is a non-governmental, non-profit making organization, founded in 1992 by active and devoted animal lovers of the island and abroad. Our purpose is to protect the island’s animals - ranging from stray dogs and cats to abandoned donkeys and mules, care for their wellbeing and become an advocate to their rights. In close cooperation with the Municipali

ty of Thira and the local vet, we insures that a great majority of stray animals are neutered and spayed, vaccinated, treated in case of injury, disease or poisoning and if possible re-homed in Greece or abroad. Moreover, SAWA oversees the implementation of the “Code of Practice” for all donkeys and mules engaged in the Bay of Fira and is constantly making efforts towards the mitigation of their health and working conditions.

As we say goodbye to the first half of summer we keep the best and funniest memories from our daily animal adventures and the amazing people who flew down to Santorini just to offer their help to the animals in need❤️‍🩹 A big thank you to all for your unconditional love... From Denmark 🇩🇰 Gitte and her grandchildren always with endless gifts for the doggies, Cathrine, Juliana and as always Benny and Marlene from Graeske Hunde ! From Switzerland 🇨🇭Lea, Jan and his dad that put lots of hours on repainting the stables and Irina who is currently here. From Sweden 🇸🇪Johan, Birgitta and Petrina. Great show up from Germany 🇩🇪with Mike from AUF ACHSE für die Fellnasen auf Santorini e.V. -who helped build the new area for our Ostrich couple- Adriana, Michael, Ute,Victoria and our very special dog trainers from Neckarpfoten Celine and Jelena who also helped us set up a SAWA summer Bazaar in Fira! Tara, Laura, Manuela, Efrosini and Sabine and daughter Mara from Tierschutzverein Hunde in Not Rhein-Main e.V. and Helena who is currently with us!Enjoy shelter life through their eyes💕👀📸🐾

Another surprise arrived at the break of dawn, 3 more donkeys to join our extended animal family... Meet Georgia, Dimitra and daughter Mathilda🩷All of them small in size with big characters. Working days are over for these girls and more are waiting to come in. We are counting 36 donkeys, mules and horses as from today, all help is welcome to secure their feed 🙏 for more info please visit SAWA-Switzerland thank you!

🍀🌾A huge shout out to the tireless and resilient team of SAWA-Switzerland who once more secured and delivered the "daily bread" to feed our 33 retired equines and numerous farm animals for the next trimester! Over 13 tons of soft grass from the Swabian Alps for our oldies and almost 3 tons of the miraculous Hay cubes for the very weak ones❤️‍🩹. Honestly this is an ongoing endeavor that exceeds any type of logistics of a well running company, it is endless work entirely from the heart, relying entirely on all those who believe in this dream and support the effort to keep these creatures fed, making the dusk of their lives all worth their endless treadmill.... 🙏Thank you again to all that donated to our SAWA Switzerland Team and the Brechter Transportation Company for their prompt delivery!

Dear friends, at the moment we are absolutely "puppied out" there are orphaned litters as well as two mums with their extended litters in every possible corner of the shelter 🐺🐺🐺Today we present you the 6 "R pups"Ruth, Riley, Rolfy, Rodney, Rob and Rorry who were abandoned at the mountain of Pyrgos, and the the 5 "P pups" Paddington, Paco, Pauli, Pepe and Pumba along with mum Poufi.
