I always feel very lucky when I look around and remember how many people help me help the animals.

Some of them I've known for years, some I've never even met in person, but they all play a part in keeping this work going.

I recently received another delivery of Bravecto arrived from Greek Animal Rescue.

It might not look very exciting in the boxes, but for me it is. Every tablet means protection for a dog that might otherwise become sick from fleas, ticks and the diseases they carry. We see too much ehrlichiosis and other tick-borne diseases here, so having these treatments available is a huge help.

When you are constantly trying to stretch every euro, donations like this make a real difference. The money I don't have to spend on Bravecto can go towards food, vet bills, neutering and the next emergency that is always waiting around the corner.

So thank you to Greek Animal Rescue and to all of the people who support them. Your help doesn't stay in the UK. It reaches the dogs here every single day.

I am very grateful, and so are the animals. ❤️

Yesterday I shared my plans with you to give old Odysseus his summer makeover and get him ready for the Greek heat. ☀️✂️

As it turns out, Odysseus had very different plans.

I hit "Share", picked up the clippers and confidently got to work. Five minutes later I was standing there holding a broken pair of clippers in one hand and a deeply offended old dog in the other.

You know the saying, "If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans"? Well, God was apparently having a wonderful afternoon. 😅

Odysseus was not enjoying his spa day. At all. The clippers had decided they were retiring effective immediately, and my customer was making it very clear that he had not booked this appointment voluntarily. So, what do you do when your grooming equipment gives up and your elderly client is threatening to leave a one-star review?

You phone Rania.

A quick call later and we were off to the clinic. Odysseus was given a very mild sedative - just enough to help him relax and cope with the experience. Not enough to knock him out, just enough to take away the stress and make things easier for him.

With Rania's much more professional equipment, the job was done quickly, calmly and without further drama. Well... without much further drama. This is Odysseus we're talking about. 😄

And just look at him now!

I'm not saying he thinks he's handsome, but he's spent considerably more time admiring himself since the haircut than before. The fluffy teddy bear has disappeared and underneath was a rather dapper little gentleman who is going to be much more comfortable during the hot summer months ahead. ❤️

The whole experience has actually given me an idea. There are another two dogs here who are absolutely terrified of being groomed. I've always worried about putting them through the stress of it, but seeing how much easier this was for Odysseus, I may well take them to the clinic and do the same.

Less stress for them, less stress for me, and significantly less chance of me ending up in a battle of wills with a pair of clippers.

I just hope Odysseus understands that all of this was for his own good. At the moment he's looking at me as though I've committed a personal betrayal of the highest order. Fortunately, I know exactly how many treats it takes to buy forgiveness. 🍖😂❤️

The temperatures are starting to rise as we head into the Greek summer, so it’s time for the long-haired dogs to have their summer haircuts ☀️✂️

I'm starting with old Odysseus.

He’s one of our senior boys here at Diasozo. He can’t see and he can’t hear anymore, but he knows when he’s safe. He knows my touch, he knows his bed, and he knows he’s loved.

A haircut might seem like a small thing, but for dogs like Odysseus it makes the hot months much easier and more comfortable.

He’ll probably spend most of the grooming pretending he’s very unhappy about it… until the treats appear 😊

Old dogs like him are easy for the world to overlook. I just hope he feels what matters now ,- that he’s cared for and protected, thanks to you guys ❤️

Today Vicky reminded everyone exactly who’s boss around here… and apparently that includes Brownie too 🤣

Poor Brownie only wanted to come over for a cuddle and some attention, but Vicky was having absolutely none of it. The moment she thought her special time with me might be interrupted, she gave him a very firm - and very loud - telling off! 😂

Honestly, for such a polite boy, Brownie took the rejection remarkably well. He just stood there looking slightly confused while Vicky made her feelings very clear. 🤣

Vicky has been with me for such a long time now. She’s one of my oldest and most senior residents, and although she likes to act tough, underneath it all she’s still my little girl who just wants reassurance that she’s loved and important.

So don’t worry, Vicky… you’ll always have my heart 🥰

And Brownie… maybe wait your turn next time! 🤣❤️

A little update on the three puppies left behind in the schoolyard ❤️

They’re all doing really well.

When I first took them in, they were tiny, unsure and still at the age where they should have been with their mother. Now they’ve started to relax, play and show their own little personalities.

“Little Boss” is still the confident one 😄 but all three are sweet, gentle puppies. They come running over when they see me now, then usually fall asleep together five minutes later.

They’ve had their first vaccine and deworming, they’re eating well, growing fast and becoming stronger every day.

And now… they are ready to start looking for homes.

They are currently available for homing through our wonderful German rescue partners, Silent Souls of Strays e.V.

If you are interested in giving one of them a home, please email: 📧 [email protected]

I’m very grateful these puppies were given a chance instead of being forgotten. Thank you to everyone who continues helping me care for them, and to the people and rescues who always stand beside me when I ask for help ❤️

A year ago, when she was just a tiny puppy, someone drove all the way up into the mountains and dumped her there. Not near a town. Not near people. Right at the top, in a tiny village where only a few people stay during the summer… and in winter, almost nobody lives there at all.

The people who were there during summer started leaving food for the little puppy. She was terrified of humans and no one could catch her. Then winter came. The snow, the cold, the isolation… and still she stayed there alone.

Only one young man, who passed through the village every couple of weeks for work, kept leaving food for her. No one could get near her. Spring came. The weather became warmer and people slowly returned to the village. That’s when they realised she was getting sick. Weak. Losing strength.

A kind lady contacted me asking for help. I gave her a trap, but still the little dog avoided everyone. Until last week, when she became too weak to run anymore and finally the lady managed to catch her. We met halfway near the village and I brought her straight to vet Rania and I decided to call her Mogli. She is around 1 year old and weighs just 4.5 kilos.

Her little body is in terrible condition.
She has sarcoptic mange.
She is positive for heartworm.
Her skin is painful and infected.
Her legs are covered in wounds from scratching herself endlessly.

But she's alive.

Tomorrow we'll know more about her character and behaviour, once she feels a little safer and less exhausted. Tonight she is warm. She has food. She is not alone anymore.

I don’t know yet what the future holds for Mogli. We're only at the beginning. I just hope she understands that no one is going to leave her behind again.

If you'd like to help Mogli and the many other dogs we rescue here in Karditsa, you can support us here ❤️

A week ago, this poor boy was found lying at the back side of a building. A lady saw him there and thought he was sleeping. No one really goes to that side very often, she told me.

Then a week later she saw him again… in exactly the same spot. This time she realised he was still alive, and she asked for my help.

I honestly cannot imagine what this cat has been through. Alone for days. No food. No water. Unable to move away. Just lying there quietly, struggling to survive while life carried on around him unnoticed.

And somehow… he's still here.

I rushed him to the clinic straight away - he's one of the stray cats from a colony I neutered some time ago, so I recognised him immediately. Seeing him like this broke my heart. After everything he's already survived on the streets, he ended up suffering alone behind a building where nobody could see him.

There are just so many animals struggling out there. You finish helping one and another appears. Some are visible, some are hidden away in places nobody notices until it is almost too late.

The vets are doing everything they can for him now. He has fluids, warmth, pain relief and finally people around him who see him and care for him.

I know… I ask too much from the universe sometimes. But this boy deserves a chance. He survived a whole week alone in that condition. That must mean something.

I just hope he feels that things are different now… that somebody finally came for him. ❤️

Today it was double trouble again.

Two young dogs arrived at the same vet within a very short time. Different people found them and brought them in, but both had almost the same terrible injury - broken back legs.

The first is a small female, around one year old and about 10 kilos. Very frightened, very quiet. She stayed curled up in the corner of the kennel, not moving much, just watching everything with worried eyes.

Then a young male arrived. Also about one year old, around 12 kilos. Another broken back leg. But this boy also has a very bad injury on one front leg too. The wound is deep and painful and will need treatment alongside the orthopaedic surgery.

Both dogs will need operations.

Some days I feel like the phone never stops. Before one emergency is even settled, another one appears at the clinic door. You look at them and think… they are still babies really. One year old and already so much pain.

But what can I do? Say no? So now we begin again. X-rays, surgeries, medication, recovery. We will do everything we can for both of them.

If anybody would like to help us with their vet costs, I would be very grateful. Truly.

Today I met Molly.

A kind man called me from a road near one of the villages and said, “Please help this dog… there are flies all over her and she doesn’t seem to move at all.”

So I went.

Under a tree, lying quietly in the dry grass, was this old setter girl. Weak, exhausted, covered in ticks and so thin you could feel every bone. She didn’t even have the strength to react much when I approached her. No microchip, no sign that anyone was looking for her.

Now Molly is safe at vet Panagiotis. We are waiting for her blood results, but already we know she has heart failure and she is very malnourished. She also needed dozens of ticks removed from her poor body.

She was very calm through everything today. Tired more than frightened, I think.

I don’t know how long she has been out there like this. In Greece we see too many old hunting dogs forgotten when they are no longer useful, left to survive alone with sickness, parasites and hunger slowly taking over.

By the time someone calls, they are often already in very bad condition.

But today, at least, someone did stop. Someone cared enough to make a phone call and so Molly has a soft place to rest, clean water, treatment and people around her who care what happens to her. For now, that's enough.

I just hope she feels that she is safe now. We’ll do what we can for her. ❤️

I’m very sad to share that this boy passed away earlier today.

The vets did everything they could for him after I rescued him on Friday from under the abandoned car, but his injuries were simply too severe. Although he was alive, his body had already started shutting down, and this morning he quietly slipped away at the clinic.

I think deep down I knew from the moment I found him that things were very bad. He barely responded, barely moved, and just looked completely exhausted.

Sometimes in rescue you get the happy ever after people hope for. Sometimes all you can do is make sure an animal doesn’t die alone, frightened and in pain under a car.

For the short time he was with us, he was warm, safe, medicated and cared for. He left this world with gentle hands around him instead of being forgotten on the street, and for a short while, thousands of people saw him and wished him well.

I just wish we had reached him sooner. ❤️
