The Souda Shelter Project

The Souda Shelter Project is a community whose goal is to rehabilitate and rehome stray animals in the Chania prefecture.

Economically challenged, our organization carefully and skillfully meets the needs of every temporary inhabitant in our space. Souda shelter in the Souda area of Chania, Crete was founded in by a well known animal activist of this area. In June of 2016, this "activist" without official notice but with a post to Facebook, cut off all ties with her shelter stranding 250 animals with the excuse that

she wished to downsize her obligations. The animals found themselves ONCE AGAIN abandoned in their lives, first by their owners and then this. They were left with NO security or plan. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by the workers of Souda Shelter who CANNOT walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter, a rather healthy environment. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to
1) maintain the same level of operations as before as pertaining to food supply and day to day living at the shelter.
2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now.
3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built.

Meet Mamba and Maoam!🍬
Those two boys were found outside, eyes infected and completely closed. From what we heard, there were two more kittens who sadly didn’t make it💔

So we took them in, treated them against parasites and they still get ongoing treatment for their eyes.
Soon, however, they will be ready for adoption! Mamba and Maoam are playful, curious little kittens who currently weigh around 330 g each. We estimate that they are about 4 weeks old.

Right now, on the road towards Stavros, after the turn at roadhouse this gorgeous dog, exhausted, and in completely s**t state is roaming the streets. He is not street savvy, he will be hit by a car. Is there anyone in the area that can pick him up or that knows him?

This little girl was left behind when her mom left to go back to her country.
Left behind.
She is fully vaccinated, chipped, housetrained and neutered.
She is approximately two and a medium sized dog.

Let’s not leave her behind again.
Her foster will be leaving the country soon.
We DON’T want her on the streets, she doesn’t know the first thing on how to survive on her own.

Will you consider her? Please.

If you’ve been to the shelter, you’ve definitely met them before (from left to right):
Quentin, Kiwi & Tarantino- the shelter OG’s ❤️

This sweet trio doesn’t ask for much: comfy couches, full bowls and sunny nap spots ☀️

These three have spent their whole lives at the shelter, growing up side by side and becoming part of its soul❤️
The shelter wouldn’t be the same without them!
And more than anything, we wish we still have many beautiful years left with them❤️

WARNING GRAPHIC PHOTOS “Hello there! My name is Annia, Im from Venezuela and Im staying some months in Crete.

I’ve found two dogs around a month in the town I’m staying. I put pipettes and flea collar cause the were full of bugs. One of them disappeared some time after and the other one appeared a week ago with huge wounds on his face/neck after fighting with another dog 😞 I took him to the vet right away, wounds were super deep and smelling like rotten. He is now covering in my yard. I called him Rumi. I’m giving him his antibiotics and he will be castrated and microchipped. I’m leaving Crete in 3 weeks and I need urgently to find a family for him ❤️‍🩹

Rumi is less than 1 year old, gave him antiparasite for inside worms and fleas/thicks. He is an extremely sweet, calm and loving dog.

I’ve already contacted many other shelters in Crete and even the same municipality and the cannot take him in. I’m desperate here cause it breaks my heart to leave him back in the streets. Unfortunately I cannot take him with me, I already have two other dogs im taking with me😔”

Just getting off the phone with Annia, she explained to me that this is a very docile animal, very calm and very quiet.
He is healing very well.
Up until the time she will leave, she will make sure that he has been vaccinated. He has just been castrated.

Is there anyone that would be interested in taking in this animal? For Foster or even adoption.
Rumi has had some pretty terrible luck. Can you be the person to change that?♥️

Happy Birthday, Boq, Fiyero, Elphaba and Dillamond!

We cannot believe these four are two years old now, especially because they were abandoned in a box outside the shelter as tiny pups. We can’t help but see these young, curious faces when we look at them today.
2 years, almost entirely spent with us.
This celebration comes with a bit of a heavy heart, as all wonderful babies are yet to find their forever homes.❤️‍🩹

We had a drop off yesterday. And not a scheduled one.

They dropped off four babies, on the road right outside of the shelter. With no box and no protection, the highway just meters away.
They were just sprawled out on the street in the pouring rain.
Thank God we hadn’t left yet.

We were worried that the new little puppies were not vibrant enough and that they might be carrying a virus.
Well they let us know this morning that they are just fine! Just watch the videos!

The two little girls have been named Glade and Vale, our two little boys are named Brook and Dune.
