The Souda Shelter Project

The Souda Shelter Project is a community whose goal is to maintain and rehome 250 plus animals which have been abandoned for a second time in their lives.

and then this. They were left with NO security or plan. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by the workers of Souda Shelter who CANNOT walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter, a rather healthy environment. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to
1) maintain the same level of operations as before as pertaining to food supply and day to day living at the shelter.
2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now.
3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built.

✨Beckett✨

Out of five little pups, only three are left now: Beckett, Nash and Axel.

We still lovingly call them the “Boss Babies” – even though they’re no longer babies. They’re just over a year old now.
Their brother and sister found homes when they were still very young. For some reason, Beckett and his brothers weren’t as lucky.💔

It’s hard to understand why – especially once you get to know them. Beckett is one of the most people-oriented dogs you’ll ever meet. He always wants to be close, seeking cuddles, love, and affection.❤️
Beckett is a funny guy, finding so much joy in his playtime (especially) with Wednesday.

However, Beckett isn’t meant for shelter life, as large groups of dogs tend to stress him out.

Beckett was born in May 2024, is castrated and weighs around 15 kg.
He’s a medium sized boy - right the size to fit into your lap!

Since Beckett grew up in the shelter, it’s the only life he’s ever known. He’ll probably need to learn how to be alone once he’s in a home.
Beckett is incredibly (!) food-motivated, which makes him easy to train.

Beckett is ready to finally see what’s beyond the shelter walls.

Jerry.
What to say about Jerry?
He is one of the founding fathers of the Souda Shelter Project. He’s been there since the beginning of our time.
He is anti social with humans.
He does not like to be touched at all.
He is terrified of us.
Everyone.
Or at least we thought.

Yesterday he had his annual checkup at the vet and the doctor noted that he had seborrhea and recommended that we bathe him with a shampoo for seborrheic dermatitis.
How the heck would we do that?! Jerry?! Contact?!

And yet, my fabulous team did.

And he enjoyed it with all of his heart!

Jerry has been at the shelter for ten years plus.
People immediately dismiss him because he barks and is timid.

Well this is the other side of Jerry.
Just look at the pleasure in his expression. He has NEVER gotten this kind of treatment ever, we thought he would hate it.
Far from it.
The expression on his face makes me cry.

To more spa treatments Jer!
We love you and hope someone will see this post and love you the same♥️ (maybe even more).

Please don’t let his life amount to time in a shelter.
Give this old boy a chance and show him something new, secure and wonderful…a home🥹

Attention please for our stunning Perla!😍

This elegant young lady is full of energy and will bring lots of laughter into your home.

She’s a stunning hunting dog mix, medium-sized, weighs around 12kg and won’t grow any bigger. She was born in March 2024.

She loves to run around, taking a bath but just as much, she loves attention from her humans.

As a hunting breed mix she may have a natural prey drive.
Perla will be the perfect match for you if you’re looking for an active dog.

Perla gets along wonderfully with other dogs- both males and females- she’s currently happily integrated into a large group of dogs, enjoying play time in the yard.
She would enjoy the company of a furry friend in her new home but would also be happy to be the only dog in the household.

She’s also very food motivated and eager to learn new things.

✨Demitasse✨

She’s about one year old now and somehow, despite her charm, she’s faded into the background.

He was found with his brother (who’s already living the good life in his forever home) and now it’s Odis’ turn to find his happily ever after.

At just 3 months old and weighing only 2 kg, Odis is already full of character.

🪷Soraya🪷 So—who? SORAYA!
If you’ve ever visited the shelter, you’ve probably... never met her at all 😞

Soraya came to us in 2021, along with her three babies—Athos, Aramis, and Porthos. She was rescued from a life on a chain. Frightened and timid, yet fiercely protective of her puppies, Soraya slowly began to blossom in her own quiet way.

Soraya's still a shy girl, but once she trusts you, she’ll let you into her small, special world—and it’s truly one of the most rewarding feelings ever. Soraya enjoys belly rubs when the timing and setting feel right. She also loves to play with her dog friends when she feels safe.

Soraya is calm, quiet, clean, and never destructive. She adores soft blankets and her sofa ❤️ One of our caretakers lovingly nicknamed her “Her Majesty”— because that’s exactly how she acts sometimes—a little like a queen, or a bit of a diva 😉

Soraya walks well on a leash but is sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements.

For Soraya, we’re looking for a peaceful home with patient, empathetic humans who will let her come out of her shell at her own pace. No small children. She enjoys the company of other dogs, and a friendly, confident resident dog would be a huge plus!

📏 Soraya is approx. 5 years old, weighs about 17 kg, and is about 50 cm tall.

✨Meet XAVIER✨

Xavier is one of the pups who were found when they were just a few days old—bottle-fed and lovingly raised in a foster home. At around 6 months old, he and his siblings came to the shelter.

At almost 10 months old, Xavier is more than ready to start a new chapter in his life.
He’s a small-to-medium-sized young boy, weighing around 10kg.

Xavier is active, playful, and full of joy! He’s also extremely social, affectionate, and trusting—thanks to growing up in a home environment with people, dogs and even cats.

He absolutely loves his playtime and is perfectly integrated into a large group of dogs. Running, playing, cuddling, snuggling—Xavier does it all. Bottle-raised, he has a deep bond with humans and shows endless affection to those around him.

✨Arabica✨

Arabica was just a little pup, sitting outside a coffee shop, when she was picked up and brought to the shelter.
That’s when she was given the name Arabica - after the coffee.☕️

Arabica is most likely the sister of Demitasse and just like her, she’s blossomed into a truly beautiful young dog.
And yet, somehow, Arabica and her sister have become nearly invisible.
It’s time she finally got the attention she deserves.

Here’s what you really need to know about our Arabica:

She is around one year old now - still young, full of energy and always ready to play with her best friends.

Arabica finds so much joy in running, playing and getting into a bit of harmless mischief now and then (😜), but she also knows when to settle down. She has a calm side and loves a good chill session just as much as playtime.

Arabica absolutely LOVES people. She enjoys her regular cuddles with our volunteers, it’s the best part of her day!❤️

She’s very intelligent and super quick to pick up new things too.

Arabica is a medium-sized shepherd mix - beautiful inside and out.

Urgently seeking a loving home for our beautiful LEMONADE! 🍋🐾

Lemonade is an absolute sweetheart🩷 She’s always seeking affection and loves nothing more than curling up next to you—or right on top of you—for a nap. Just looking at her gets her purring!

But don’t be fooled by her snuggly side—Lemonade is still young, curious, and bursting with playful energy. She loves to run, jump, and explore, so we’re looking for a home with another playful cat companion to help keep her active and happy.

🐾 Lives currently in a foster home with other cats and a dog and gets along well with them.

Meet SCOTT — living proof that lapdogs don’t have to be small❤

Scott—or Scottiiiiiii— loves nothing more than climbing onto people's laps for some quality snuggle time and we absolutely love seeing this side of him now, because things looked quite different in the beginning.

When Scott and his brother were found abandoned in front of the shelter last summer, Scott wasn’t thrilled about humans at all. Extremely reserved and shy, everything was scary at first—especially people.

But over time, Scott has made amazing progress. Once he overcame his initial shyness, he began to truly enjoy human attention and now follows staff and volunteers around everywhere.

Scott gets along beautifully with other dogs—regardless of gender, age, or size. He’s a social butterfly at heart and loves playing, romping around with his buddies, taking naps in the shade, and—of course—soaking up all the cuddles he can get!

For Scott, we’re looking for a home with kind-hearted people who will give him the time he needs to feel safe and show him just how good life can be❤️

Scott is currently about one year old with a shoulder height of 45–50 cm. He is neutered and weighs around 18 kg.

Who’s that beauty?
It’s TWIG! Aka Twiggles😍

The forgotten brother of the floral five. His four sisters have already found loving homes, but somehow, he was left behind💔

Born in July 2023, Twig will soon turn 2 years old.
Almost all of that time spent in the shelter.

We have no explanation for that.
Twig is an absolute gem, a hidden treasure just waiting to be discovered.
He’s very social with other dogs and absolutely ADORES people!

Twig is always seeking human attention, trying to find love wherever he goes.
He does the cutest little dances and makes sweet noises just to get you to notice him.
If it were up to Twig, he’d spend the whole day in your arms, soaking up every bit of love and affection he can get.

Sadly, it just hasn’t worked out for him so far. Maybe it’s the color of his fur, combined with him being male - we don’t know.
All we know is that it’s such a shame!
We just KNOW, Twig will make someone out there incredibly happy.

He weighs around 18 kg and is a medium-sized dog. Playful, energetic, funny, affectionate and just so sweet - Twig truly is the whole package!

Our Story

Souda shelter in the Souda area of Chania, Crete was founded in by a well known animal activist of this area. In June of 2016, this "activist" without official notice but with a post to Facebook, cut off all ties with her shelter stranding 250 animals with the excuse that she wished to downsize her obligations. The animals found themselves ONCE AGAIN abandoned in their lives, first by their owners and then this. They were left with NO security or plan. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by Elizabeth Iliakis, a previous helper at the Souda Shelter who could not walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. As the previous owner would just collect animals from the street and throw them into the shelter, Elizabeth got to know the animals personally and made it a goal to improve their lives and rehome them. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to 1) create a healthy living environment for the animals living at the shelter which entails mental stimulation, routine veterinary check ups, drainage systems for waste, consultations with specialists pertaining to animal handling and behavior. 2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now. 3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built. To build a new, legal, visitor friendly environment for both cats and dogs. We are a non profit organisation. At the moment we are down to 100 animals and would appreciate your help in any way.
