Countdown to the new year: Elva

A tuxedo lady of unknown age 🌻

Knowing her age is not possible because all her teeth had been removed before she was rescued. Vets usually calculate a cat's age based on the state of the dentition. Surgical removal of all teeth is the standard treatment for very severe cases of gingivitis. Her microchip is registered to a municipality, so she was probably treated, neutered, and released back outside.

She is extremely good with humans. Top 3 of all cats here. She was found begging for food and attention outside a hotel by a tourist who wanted to help her and who finally contacted me. The original plan was for that person to take her after adoption preparation, but it didn't work out, as Elva required treatment and special attention. Indeed, her adventures at the vet are still not over. We were back there only the other day for her eyes and lungs. She has iris melanosis; the vet said that it is not something to worry about, but it still needs monitoring because it could transform to iris melanoma. She should not be outside exposed to the sun. She also has sensitive lungs from all the years living outside in one of the coldest Athenian suburbs, and she's prone to developing bronchitis. She's now on treatment for that, and we also did tests for her eyes.

Elva always sits on my lap when I work. It's a rule whether I like it or not. She sits there, and she purrs continuously. She then hisses at other cats who might want to approach. She doesn't have feline friends. She doesn't fight with the others but also doesn't like them. She's strong and independent, so nobody tries to bully her either. Elva would do wonderfully as an only cat, and that would be her preference, but she could also adapt in a home with other cats as long as they are willing to ignore her (as she will certainly ignore them).

Elva is as cute as a living toy. She looks all serious but transforms to a super cuddly purring machine the minute anyone notices her. The person who will adopt her will be very lucky indeed and will 100% adore her. I hope we'll be done with all her treatments soon so her adoption journey can begin ❤️

Countdown to the new year: Lancelot

A 3-year-old male tabby 🌻

They say cats have more than 200 facial expressions, and Lancelot wears them all; he could star in a horror movie 😅 I have never met a more expressive cat. He's particularly fond of showing disapproval, annoyance, and despair (the philosophical kind, for the state of the world and such). He's permanently misunderstood and let down, and that's why he's a Lancelot 👀

Lancelot grew up with Caramela, Flor, Babi, and Yumi. The fantastic five missed their chance to find homes when they were kittens because Caramela got FIP, and they all remained in quarantine for a long time after. Fortunately, none of them showed symptoms. Indeed, Lancelot has never had any health problem at all.

Lancelot is cute beyond words. When I talk to him, he head bumps the air and falls down (like every day) 🤭 He inconspicuously finds himself on my lap. He weighs very little, so I don't actually notice him getting comfortable; I just look down at some point and see him there pretending to be asleep. His best show is when asking for food, i.e., every time he sees me approaching the kitchen. His tactic is to express confidence that I will naturally give him whatever it is that I happen to be handling at the time (I don't).

He's very talkative and very loud. He has something to say on all occasions. He's friends with most of the others but gets stressed easily and reacts with hysterics when, for instance, Bat tries to bully him. Lancelot does not tolerate bullying; he screams back at Bat loud enough for the whole neighborhood to join in the fun. I don't think anyone can take him seriously, though, because he's tiny and possibly has a few chihuahua genes 🙄

Lancelot would do best in a home with a feline buddy for play and company; he could be adopted with any of the other five; they're all good friends and have been waiting for a long time 🧡

Countdown to the new year: Buttercup

A 1-year-old female calico tabby 🌻

Buttercup is one of the four little sisters. She is generally shy, but she forgets all about it when tempted with yummy wet food. This is how I managed to trap her first, before the other three, and she's been here ever since. She was a completely adorable kitten, and I thought it would be super easy to find a home for her, but I thought wrong 🤷‍♀️

Buttercup is very well mannered. She never fights with the others, and she's very gentle during play time. She hesitates to approach me outside meal times, when she's first to come near for her share. She's not very cuddly here, but that does not necessarily reflect her personality because she has very little opportunity to open up with all the other cats. I believe that once in her forever home, she'll come out of her shell and be as adorable in behavior as she is in looks.

She's moderately social with the other cats, especially her sisters, and she doesn't mind dogs at all. She has shown no aggressive tendencies and would make a loving companion for a well-behaved child. She shyly approaches for attention or to explore and always gives first a cute look asking for permission. She's very quiet; I have hardly ever heard her meow, and she mostly goes unnoticed. Again, this does not necessarily reflect her true nature. This may as well be her reaction to sharing her space with several other, more dominant cats.

In all, Buttercup is a healthy, strong, and beautiful little lady who could be adopted either alone or together with one of her sisters. She will adapt well to any environment, as she's not fussy or demanding and does well with everyone ❤️

Countdown to the new year: Fred

A 6-year-old male ginger 🌻

Fred was rescued together with George when they were kittens after almost all their siblings had been killed by cars; they were in an area where traffic was just crazy. Fred and George used to be very bonded, but they're currently in separate parts of the house because George can't cope with Fred's energy now that he's ill.

Fred is a huge cat, upward of 8 kilos without being chubby; he's just big. His size and his very dominant personality make him a little overwhelming at times. For instance, he insists on climbing on my lap and grooming me meticulously with loud objection meows if I dare try to escape 🤦‍♀️

He's very sweet with everyone. He never fights with other cats. He's happy to cuddle with anyone interested: cats, dogs, humans, but he's also a little overbearing toward other male cats who can feel intimidated by his size and zen insistence on doing whatever he wants at all times. Some try to fight with him, but he just looks at them like... really?

Fred enjoys grabbing shoes, toys, and other random objects and taking them around the house in his mouth with very loud meows. I don't know what he means, but I'm sure it's a thing in cat culture. He's generally very vocal and always happy to express his views. Despite his general zen, he gets scared really easily. He's the first to disappear under the bed when there's a visitor, and I only need to show him the flea spray bottle to get him off the kitchen counter in seconds 🤭

His most annoying habit is stealing food with the outmost audacity. He jumps to get to plates, sneak attacks, comes out of nowhere ninja style, or just gets to the food and dares anyone to question his right to eat everything himself down to the last morsel. So, when I need to give someone pills hidden in food, for instance, I first have to give Fred a treat to keep him occupied. Yes, we live in a Fredish dictatorship here.

Thankfully, at least he's always been healthy, and I hope he continues this way for a long time ❤️

Countdown to the new year: George

A 6-year-old male ginger 🌻

George has been fighting with dental problems for almost a year. He has lost half his weight and is in constant pain. He cannot eat and cannot groom himself. He's had nearly all his teeth surgically removed, but he belongs to the 30% of cats that do not respond to this type of treatment.

His diagnosis is of autoimmune gingivitis, but I believe that the cause is viral or bacterial because he got sick after Pif with the same symptoms. This may be wishful thinking because the only treatment for the autoimmune form is cortisone, which will slowly kill him. However, Nietzsche was also diagnosed with the autoimmune form, but it was actually viral, and he was fully healed after two months of antiviral therapy. In general, all cats belonging to the 30% are diagnosed with the autoimmune form irrespective of the actual cause and none survive for long, seeing as they don't receive treatment that could save them.

I'm currently giving George a strong anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anxiolytic mix, hoping to replace the comfort provided by cortisone without the debilitating side effects. It seems to be working, but he still needs cortisone some days. I’ve sent to the lab a sample from his mouth for analysis (waiting to hear back), but finding the cause may not be possible, especially if it's viral. Even if some bacteria are identified, they may just be opportunistic, and treating them would not solve the problem.

I'll keep trying in any case. Poor George is still so young and used to be a real ginger devil; now, he spends all day hiding and running away in the sight of food. Gingivitis really is one of the worst things that can happen to both the cat and the cat pawrent 😢

Countdown to the new year: Nietzsche

A 7-year-old male tuxedo 🌻

Not much to say about my Nietzsche that I haven't said before. He's perfect and wonderful 🤭

Nietzsche overcame debilitating gingivitis after having all his teeth removed. This has left him with several health issues, which are not going away. Many vets insist that a cat can live a normal life with zero teeth, but this is not entirely true. Moreover, as he had to take a lot of cortisone until his mouth finally healed, he's now living with arthritis and obesity. Despite everything, he remains the cuddliest sweetheart, friendly and loving with everyone ❤️

Countdown to the new year: Terri

A 1-year-old female tuxedo 🌻

Terri (full name, Terrifique) was rescued together with her sisters when they were tiny kittens. They were trying to survive in a highly hostile area, and staying there would have been very dangerous. They were under the protection of an adult cat I first thought was their mom but was actually their dad! Best dad ever, kept them safe and happy until they could be moved to a home ❤️

I was hoping that Terri and her sisters would be adopted fast because they were such cute babies, so they first went to a lovely temporary foster home where they could only stay for a short time. Unfortunately, nothing was found for them, and they moved to the shelter for a while and then came here. 0f the four, only Circe has found a home so far. The others are still hoping.

Terri is the bravest and cuddliest of the four. Some may say that she's also the cutest 😊 She's the first to explore, loves cuddles, seeks human attention, and spends lots of time playing and fooling around with her sisters and other kitty friends. However, she's also careful, gentle, and has excellent manners.

Terri is an easygoing girl with very few demands, but she's also the leader of her little group. Her sisters follow her lead and run to hide behind her when there's trouble! It would be wonderful for Terri to find a home with her sister Demi who is particularly shy. They would be happy together and would give their human twice the joy!

Countdown to the new year: Nephele

A 4-year-old female tabby 🌻

Nephele was born in my yard; I used to live in Syros island back then. Her mom was neutered, and she and her brother were growing up relatively happily until he was hit by a car. They were still kittens at the time. So, I decided that risking leaving them outside wouldn't really be an option. Her brother, Ivanhoe, was adopted, and she was left behind; she grew up with Bat, and they developed a very close bond.

There was never anything wrong with Nephele; she's always been strong, healthy, and happy. She's never even had a runny nose. She could have been adopted years ago, but she's still here because I want her to find a home together with Bat, as I know she'll be miserable without him, and he tolerates no other cat.

In contrast to Bat, Nephele is very social with other cats; she has many friends and enjoys playing with them. She's thoroughly non-aggressive and easily bullied because she's gentle and shy. She was originally reluctant to approach me and let me pet her, but she's gotten over it, and she now loves sitting beside me and giving me cute little head bumps. Of course, she also loves demanding her share of yummy snacks with loud meows 🤭

I'm planning on making a renewed effort to find them a home together after Bat recovers from his dental problems. Nephele is happy here because she has Bat and all her other little friends, but I'm sure she'll be much happier at her own home where she can enjoy exclusive attention and hopefully entirely come out of her shell ❤️

Countdown to the new year: Bat

A 4-year-old male blackie 🌻

Bat was found at a parking lot when he was tiny in miserable condition. As he's long haired, it wasn't immediately apparent that he was skin and bones. He's gone through illness after illness, which has made him particularly grumpy. He started with basic gastro issues that often plague stray kittens, continued with ocular FIP, i.e., the worst form, and is now troubled by dental issues: he cannot eat and has lost hair around his mouth. He's scheduled for dental surgery later this month.

Bat spends a lot of his time terrorizing the other cats. He does not discriminate: male and female, young and old, big and small, all are fair game. He only tolerates his best friend, Nephele. They grew up together, and she adores him. They have been looking for a forever home where they go together for 4 years without luck.

Bat is excellent with humans but also temperamental. Even when I first found him, sick and starving, he was much more interested in cuddles than in food. He can be cute, sweet, and playful and is very obedient. He made no objections even while receiving with FIP shots, which are extremely painful. Indeed, his compliance is a main reason why he's managed to recover from all those health issues.

He's running after me asking for food even after having just eaten; I think that's a remnant from his starving days. He's always sitting next to me, loves brushing and general grooming, and can be easily picked up. In short, he's a human-oriented cat with one and only feline friend.

As a FIP survivor (fully recovered for > 2 years) who's to be adopted as part of a pair in a home without other cats, his chances are not high, and that's why he and Nephele are considered long-term fosters. However, I will not give up hope ❤️

Countdown to the new year: Doko Jin

A 4-year-old male tiger tabby 🌻

It took some time for Doko to be rescued because there was a long waiting list at the time. He
was given priority when his missing eye started oozing to a degree that was impossible to ignore. His right eye was rotting inside its socket, but there was nowhere for him to go. Finally, he remained at the clinic for recovery after his eye-removal surgery for longer than a month and then came to my house.

Doko was aggressive with the other cats while living outside and was very weary of humans; he
would not let me go near him. He was a neighborhood menace, fighting with everybody nonstop. He completely transformed after his recovery: he gained weight, became cute and fluffy, and is not leaving my side for any reason. He jumps on my lap the minute I sit down anywhere and insists on sleeping next to my head every night. He’s even made a couple of cat
friends and enjoys cuddling and playing with them.

When Harry needed a second blood transfusion last February, the vets decided that Doko would
make the best donor because he’s in excellent health and excellent with humans; he was purring and flirting with the vets throughout the transfusion process. Harry could not be saved in the end, but he did get to enjoy a whole extra month of life because of Doko.

Doko is picky with food and eats like a princess! He inspects his every bite in miniscule detail and eats tiny bits at a time (yes, it’s cute). He’s really jumpy because he’s missing an eye and is not used to it. He wasn’t born with an affliction; he either hurt his eye in a flight and it festered or he got an infection. In any case, when someone approaches from outside his field of vision, he gets scared and dashes. That someone is usually me, and then, I have to run after him to reassure him that I’m not a ghost! Thankfully, this behavior is gradually improving.

Doko is a foster, and I’m hoping a perfect home can be found for him, but I’m also hoping that nobody will ever want him so I can keep him here forever 🤭 He’s as perfect as a slice of fluffy heaven in compact size to fit in your arms and take away all your worries with his purrs

Countdown to the new year: Mateo

A 1-year-old male tabby 🌻

Mateo was rescued when he was about 2 weeks old by a young lady visiting Athens. He found him in a box on a pavement. He could fit in my palm back then, and now, he's quite huge at 7 kilos (or a bit more 🤭).

Mateo was raised with the bottle, and he had the exceptional luck to be adopted by a very loving cat called Layla who happened to be recovering after her neutering operation in my house at the time. He spent his first 2 months here exclusively with her, being pampered 24/7. He grew up obnoxiously spoiled, and Layla couldn't tolerate him anymore after a point, so he joined the crew (where he continued to pester everyone).

He has calmed down quite a bit since then, but he remains overdominant, overconfident, and quite mischievous. He's friendly with the other cats, but not all of them are willing to put up with his boundless energy.

Mateo is not really aware of how big he's become and insists on trying to sit on my lap (which is half his size) at every opportunity, like the kitten he was just a few months ago. There must be at least some maine c**n hidden in those genes!

Mateo is extremely cuddly and sensitive. He looks very hurt whenever I tell him off for his numerous misadventures, but he's willing to forget it at the very mention of the word "snack" 😉 He does love everything to do with yummy food and is there first at lightning speed at the sound of any can opening!

Despite all that though, he's also very obedient. He always comes immediately when I call him, understands everything I tell him, and knows when he's gone too far with his antics. He does throw the occasional rebellious look nonetheless.

Mateo is young, strong, healthy, and gorgeous. A perfect cat. I sincerely have no idea why nobody has shown interest in adopting him yet 😢

02/12/2025

Update: Emilia is currently fostered by Yvonne from Care About Nature, but Yvonne is leaving on the 28th of December. We’re urgently looking for a new foster (or forever) home for Emilia starting on the 28th! This is really urgent and important!

Since her rescue, Emilia has proven excellent on all counts. She’s perfect inside the house: very quiet, very lady-like, very careful, loves sleeping on the couch, loves her snacks, lets the cat walk on her and groom her, and follows the family dog everywhere, treating him like a teacher/dad/partner. She’s also perfect during walkies.

We’ve learned through the municipality that Emilia was abandoned in a field next to the cemetery by a man on a motorcycle who just threw her there. She was in poor condition; she looked very sick. She may have also given birth recently. A lady saw this happening and called the municipality, who sent someone to pick Emilia up and take her to DIKEPAZ, generally considered a bleak place. She stayed there for a relatively long time because she required treatment. She was then released back near where she was found. We know nothing else of Emilia’s story, but given her excellent behavior inside the house and during walkies, she may have grown up with a family who then abandoned her.

The municipality has sent us Emilia’s medical records (vaccinations, treatments, neutering, microchip), and we did extra tests and repeat vaccinations at the local vet clinic. Her blood and biochemistry tests results were excellent; she’s very healthy. However, she tested positive for leishmaniasis at 1/100, and we did PCR testing for further investigation, which came back negative. The vet judged that she does not have leishmaniasis; she may have had the vaccine at some point, and the initial test may have detected those antibodies.

In all, Emilia is a well-behaved, healthy young lady very urgently looking for a place to go! Please consider taking her in even for a short time, until we can find a home for her!

________

This is Emilia ❤️

She was found wandering in the area and immediately drew a lot of attention because there are no other stray dogs here. The municipality confirmed that Emilia was picked up, neutered, dewormed, vaccinated, microchipped, and returned. The intention was to release her in the municipal park; however, she did not like the idea and wandered off.

Emilia is now in a very temporary foster situation, and I’m looking for a long-term solution for her: either a proper foster home or, ideally, a forever home. Emilia is a labrador mix, healthy, young, around 1.5 years old and 30 kg, very affectionate with humans, and enthusiastically friendly with cats and dogs without any signs of aggression. She has so far acted like a proper lady inside the house, and she’s much more interested in getting back inside than in going outside for walkies.

Emilia can only stay where she is for a couple more days, and then she’ll have to be moved to a secure outside space without indoor access or company just to stay safe until a foster or forever home is found for her. This is far from ideal, especially seeing how the weather is getting colder, but I have so far found no other solution. If you can take Emilia in or if you know someone who would be willing, please send me a message 😊
