The Night I Almost Sued a Client
It was a quiet night when my phone rang. On the other end was a man whose voice trembled with urgency, his pet was dying. I recognized his name immediately. Weeks earlier, he had come into my inbox seeking advice about his dog. I remembered how, after carefully explaining his pet’s condition and possible causes, he had brushed me off, saying he would “just Google it.”
So, when he called that night, I was naturally skeptical. Yet, as a veterinarian bound by oath not to ignore an animal in distress, I couldn’t turn away. I gathered my equipment and drove out to his location.
When I arrived, I quickly assessed the dog. It was indeed in critical condition. I shared my findings, discussed my differential diagnoses, and outlined what immediate interventions I would take to stabilize the animal before running confirmatory tests in the morning.
But before I could proceed, he interrupted. He pulled out his phone, opened a Google search, and began reading aloud his “diagnosis” and treatment plan. He insisted that I follow what he had found online.
I took my time, calmly explaining why his “Google diagnosis” didn’t fit the clinical picture and how certain procedures could actually worsen the situation. But he remained adamant. At that point, I had no choice but to step back. I couldn’t compromise my professional ethics or risk the animal’s life with an unproven, unsafe intervention. I left, heavy-hearted.
The next morning, I heard that the dog had died. Not long after, he began calling and sending messages, accusing me, threatening me, and creating unnecessary drama. Eventually, the situation escalated to the police station, where the criminal aspect was settled. He vowed to drag my name through the media and “expose” me publicly.
I looked him in the eye and told him calmly, “If you try that, we’ll meet in court.”
He didn’t try it.
That night taught me a lasting lesson on how dangerous misinformation can be, and how important it is to stand firm on professional integrity, even when emotions run high.
