The End of an Era – A Fond Farewell to John Knight
After decades of dedication, our beloved vet John Knight is retiring. We want to thank John for his hard work, expertise, and passion—his contributions have shaped the practice into what it is today. He will be truly missed.
John’s journey into veterinary medicine began in the African bush, surrounded by exotic wildlife. Unlike most, he always knew what he wanted to do—and his career has been anything but ordinary. From handling a venomous green mamba as a child to transporting a gorilla in the back of a car (which inconveniently woke up mid-journey), his adventures have been remarkable. There was also the time a supposedly sedated Siberian tiger stood back up, and an elephant that threw a dart right back at him—health and safety would have had a field day!
After qualifying, John briefly worked in private practice before landing his dream job as Veterinary Officer for the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). He treated extraordinary animals, worked with leading scientists, and traveled the world, including China’s WWF panda breeding station and a wildlife reserve in Saudi Arabia. His expertise in wildlife medicine is legendary—some might say rivalling that of David Attenborough!
In 1988, John moved to Guernsey to join Alistair MacRae as a partner. Many of you may remember those early days! He worked tirelessly to build the practice while continuing his passion for conservation, collaborating with organisations like Born Free, IFAW, and the GSPCA. His dedication, problem-solving skills, and kindness have made him an exceptional vet and a beloved member of our team.
John would like to thank his colleagues, past and present, for their support, and his clients for their loyalty over the years.
John, from all of us—thank you. You’ve left an incredible legacy, and we wish you a well-earned, adventure-filled retirement!
