🐾Breed of the Week - Basset Hound🐾

Basset Hounds were originally bred from the French Basset (‘basset’ meaning ‘fairly low’) and the English Bloodhound. They are scent hounds, with an incredible sense of smell. Their short legs mean they are low to the ground for easier sniffing and are very strong; Basset Hounds can walk for miles and have incredible stamina given their stature (albeit at their own speed!). The folded skin on their faces and long ears also play a part in sweeping up smells towards their noses.

Sailor is loving and playful, and wants to be friends with everyone - human or dog. He loves smelling everything on walks and definitely shows the stubborn traits of his breed, often face-planting if he doesn’t want to walk where you want him to! He loves cuddles and is simply adorable ❤️

Beautiful Bertha is a Bracco Italiano!

These dogs are also known as Italian Pointers. They are one of the oldest pointing breeds, dating back to the 4th or 5th Century. They are traditional hunting dogs, and are therefore intelligent and hard-working, so need lots of training and like to be given work to do!

Bertha is incredibly loving and loves a snuggle. She loves a long snooze, and will go out for a walk on her terms only - no sleep interruption please! When out and about, she’ll always be on the lookout for game to retrieve, so I need to keep a close eye if I don’t want another ‘pheasant incident’…! 😆

🐾Breed of the Week - Portuguese Sheepdog🐾

Lovely Figo is a Portuguese Sheepdog.

This breed is rare in England, but thanks to breeders and enthusiasts like they are gradually gaining a presence in this country.

As their name suggests, they were originally bred to round and protect livestock alongside their shepherds. They are lively and love to play and go for long walks, and make very loving pets.

One thing that’s great about the Portuguese Sheepdog is their hypoallergenic coat, which doesn’t shed.

Figo is playful, loving, silly, and independent, and has made us want a Portuguese Sheepdog as our first dog!

Connie, Teddy and Ozzy are Pyrenean Mountain Dogs.

This is a giant breed which was originally bred for guarding livestock. This means that they are very protective (read: lots of barking when someone comes to or even dares to walk past the house!). Their thick, fluffy coats would’ve been ideal for spending days out on the mountains.

These three are very loyal and snuggly but can be stubborn sometimes (try getting giant Teddy to go somewhere he doesn’t want to when he’s sat down and put the brakes on!). They love cuddles and spend a lot of the day sleeping, but definitely have their playful moments throughout the day too.

One thing I love about looking after dogs is that I get to know so many different breeds! So I thought that every week I’d do a little spotlight post on a different breed or cross-breed - welcome to Breed of the Week!

Oscar is a Galgo Español.

Also known as the Spanish Greyhound, the Galgo Español is a sight hound which resembles the English Greyhound you’re no doubt familiar with. They were used by noble families in Spain for hunting, but their origins can be traced back to the 10th Century. The breed was also mentioned in well-known Spanish novel ‘Don Quixote’.

In terms of characteristics, Oscar certainly fit the mould! Much like English greyhounds, this breed is very docile and doesn’t need much exercise. James spent the entire day sleeping, and definitely preferred to be inside in the warm than outside feeling the December chill! He was also very cuddly and I loved having him snuggled up with me on the sofa.
