At SPANA, we understand that access to clean water is vital for the survival of working animals. Across the world, we are working alongside our partners to safeguard animals affected by the water crisis by providing access to water and vital veterinary care.

In Zimbabwe, we recently installed four solar-powered boreholes in drought-stricken villages with no previous access to water – providing a lifeline for animals and people alike.

And in Morocco, we built ten drinking fountains across Marrakech for thirsty caleche horses. These are regularly refilled and maintained by a SPANA water cart, ensuring that thirsty caleche horses working in the heat have access to the fresh water they need.

But we know that, in addition to providing immediate support, we must advocate. That’s why SPANA is calling on governments to recognise the severe impact the water crisis is having on working animals, and the crucial role they play in helping communities access clean water – particularly in times of emergency. We are urging for the prioritisation of effective water management strategies, including multiple use water services (MUS) to ensure fair water access for all.
