Dog Training has moved so far forward in the last 10 years.
It's truly great to see people using modern positive training to teach behaviours.
But what's so wonderful is seeing people wanting to understand their dogs. Wanting them to feel happier.
Sadly there are still some old fashioned "trainer's" around.
They want to "break dogs spirits", teach them their behaviour is wrong and usually use equipment and techniques designed to cause your dog stress or pain. 😫
(Remember, if it doesn't cause stress or pain...it wouldn't work! )
It really makes me sad that people are still sold the idea of a quick fix.
Slap a lead on, have dog pulled round by the neck.
Job done. Right? 🤔
It's rarely something that will help in the long run, and these folk never warn you of the side effects.
Dogs trained with these techniques will be more likely to be anxious and reactive with volatility when worried.
This is because their attempts to communicate are punished and not respected.
They may stop barking or growling if punished but below the surface they're still distressed. :(
Nothing has been solved, your dog will react again someday and will react like he's fighting for his life.
Not to mention the long term physical effects of yanking on your dogs neck.
Marley has cervical IVDD , the discs in his neck are damaged.
Why?
Because I used a slip lead under his jaw to correct him when younger. ( Before I knew better)
Only for a few months.
But the nuerologist I spoke to told me that was enough to cause damage.
He struggles physically because of this now.
But no one warned me that when it was advised.
Dogs are complex emotional creatures, not robots.
Punishing them for not understanding us is a dirty trick.
The reason we love dogs, is because they're dogs!
We should learn to understand them and train them in a way they clearly understand.
