The measurement of the larvae's mouth, described as the "mouth gape", is the ultimate factor that defines what kind of food the larvae is physically able to ingest. Aquaculture researchers are very interested in monitoring the gape height development over the larval period so that informed decisions can be made about which live prey species is provided in the culture environment. Researchers compare the three dimensional gape area to different live feed items such as copepods, rotifers and artemia to determine at what developmental age the larvae can ingest larger, more nutritious prey items. The mouth gape is mathmatically determined by measuring the length of the major jaw bones as the image of a 3DPH Pacific blue tang larvae below demonstrates.
