Did you know❓

Antifreeze is toxic to cats‼️

The smell and taste of antifreeze is very appealing to our feline friends, and they are likely to lap it up if they come across a spillage. So, as the weather starts to chill off, please be careful when topping up your cars with antifreeze and clear up any spillages made.

For cat owners, check out the symptoms of antifreeze poisoning to be aware of below.

Arthritis isn’t just an old dog problem. Just like people, dogs can develop joint pain at any age.

Younger dogs may be at risk due to:
✅ Being overweight
✅ Hip or elbow dysplasia
✅ Injuries like fractures or cruciate ligament tears
✅ High-impact activities (e.g. flyball, agility)
✅ Breed type - especially large or giant breeds

To help you spot the signs early, we recommend the Dog Mobility App (DogMA) - a free, easy to use, scientifically validated tool from the University of Liverpool that helps you assess your dog’s mobility at home.

🎆 Fireworks and fear: Lulu’s story 🎆

“Lulu is terrified of fireworks. During lockdown, there were so many I genuinely thought she might have a heart attack. I believed I'd tried everything. I never thought my vet could help, but last year, I mentioned it during a visit and was given something to apply to Lulu’s gums. It worked. She’s 13 now, and I feel awful knowing she suffered for so long because I didn’t ask sooner.”

If your dog struggles with fireworks, you're not alone - and there are ways we can help. From calming products to tailored advice, your vet can offer support to make firework season less stressful for your pet.

People dressed in costumes and unexpected knocks at the door can be confusing and scary for many dogs.

Here are our Halloween top tips:
🎃 Be careful when opening the door so your dog doesn’t accidentally escape
👻 If your dog is really worried, consider a sign saying ‘nervous dog, please do not knock’. You could still leave treats out for children to help themselves
🍬 Keep human sweets and chocolate safely out of your dog’s reach
🧛 Keep dressing up for humans only. Costumes can feel restrictive and prevent your pet from communicating their discomfort

On Sunday 26th October, the clocks go back one hour as British Summer Time ends.
While this gives us an extra hour in bed, it can disrupt our pets’ routines, especially feeding and walking schedules.
Animals thrive on consistency, so sudden changes can cause confusion or anxiety. To help ease the transition, consider gradually adjusting your pet’s routine over a few days leading up to the change.
A little preparation can make a big difference in keeping your furry friends happy and settled.

Have you noticed your pet reacting to the time change before? Share your stories or tips below - we’d love to hear them! 🐶🐱🕒

Oaklands Veterinary Centre

Our caring team of diversely skilled and experienced veterinary surgeons and nurses are aided by our dedicated reception and support staff in an idyllic, accessible location, offering the very latest in facilities and veterinary technology.

Oaklands Veterinary Centre has long been regarded as a centre of veterinary excellence in the North East of England, having grown exponentially since it was established by Graham Russ, who ran the practice from his home in Maltby, moving to our current site in the seventies.

The practice continues to grow, and although Graham has since retired, investment in the practice over recent years has been enormous, with extensive rebuilding completed in November 2015. This has enabled us to continue our veterinary tradition offering your pets access to the very best veterinary care from our beautiful site.
