Some of the lesser known Ceiriog Valley sky scrapers...

This stunning location is one of our best honey producing apiaries - as you can see by the number of supers on these hardworking hives, there should be a bonnie crop of mixed wildflower honey come the end of the summer.

And, as always, our double brood box system means we ensure there's plenty enough honey left for the colony to see the bees happily through the winter months 🐝

Feels great to be out adding the first supers (honey boxes) onto the hives... we store the supers wet over winter, which means they still have some of last years honey in them. This means for hives who are a little light on stores, or if the weather turns and they're not able to get out and forage, they'll be glad of a little sweet treat. ...and then when the weather comes good they'll set to filling the supers with nectar 🍯

Cloud inversion atop Dinas BrΓ’n, looking towards the Ceiriog from the Dee Valley. Beautiful to have some cold, crisp winter days after the rains!

A big thanks to all who supported us in the Christmas run-up, and belated Happy New Year as we look forward to the season ahead.

It will be a while before what I think of as the 'beekeepers new year', with the signs of Spring still laying in wait. Still, a great time to be planning and networking - I've been enjoying getting out to Beekeeping Association meetings including in Flintshire and on the Wirral where I was honoured to lecture on the Welsh black honeybee, around which I'm thrilled to say there is increasing interest and attention.

Let's see what 2023 holds! 🐝

This little upland stream by the heather moor apiary has somehow kept flowing, even throughout all the heat we've had. It's a vital water source for our moorland hives, and doubtless provides habitat for countless tiny aquatic creatures, and larger ones as it travels down the valley, perhaps joining other water courses.

A shallow dish or plant pot saucer with some pebbles and twigs, filled with water makes a great alternative for landlocked hives!

This one's all about heather honey season, and how a friend's swarm collection earlier in the year caused some unintended consequences for his hives...

Plus, the perils of hybridisation illustrate the importance of Queen rearing With families on their summer holidays, and many places in the UK and Europe having experienced serious heat over the past weeks, it seems strange to be thinking about winter… but, such is the beekeeping year! As we look ...
