Hi , it’s Eileen, myself and my daughter have Benson the boxer, I believe from Justine and our mutual friend Rachel that you have a friend who might be interested in taking Benson.
I’m not sure what you know about Benson, but he was with an elderly gentleman in his 80’s who got Benson when he was around 10minth old from Ireland, we think Benson was meant for being a stud dog but it didn’t happen for some reason, we think he may have lived outside to without much interaction. When David, elderly gentleman got him, he couldn’t walk him or manage him. Rachel who owns Domestic Bliss along with Enya at the time. was contacted by David to see if as a company we could help and walk him, which we did. However, David wasn’t consistent in letting us walk him and didn’t want to listen too advice about Bensons behaviour. As far as we can make out, David would also beat Benson, we feel that he did from Bensons behaviour now. He also wouldn’t take him out or let him in the garden to do his business but then beat him for doing his poo’s/wee’s inside the house.
We took Benson as we desperately wanted him out of the situation. I have experience of boxers and also Enya is used to big dogs and does dog training.
Currently, Benson now has basic manners, he will sit, wait for his food, you can take food off him, put your hand in his mouth and only has the odd accident. His problem is that he is very bouncy and will jump in your face, barking, he’s very strong as he’s a big lad. He’s also dog aggressive so is currently muzzled outside, at the moment this is becoming a real problem in that he has to be taken out very early morning or late at night to avoid too many dogs/people.
My problem is that I have just had a knee replacement and if I’m at home with Benson on my own, his lunging at you especially when he’s given boundaries is becoming a problem. He has already managed to open my wound by catching my knee with his paw. Enya also goes back to work in a couple of weeks so can’t be here to help manage his behaviour or continue with his training outside as well as in the house.
He does calm down, but only after he’s been crated for half an hour or. so, he also has. a very gentle side to him.
We feel that if he had a bigger, safe space where he can run, outside garden for example he would be a lot better, as I’m not driving at the moment I can’t take him to an enclosed field. He definitely needs an adult only home, or over 16’s, if possible dog free, unless it’s a big dog that would stand up to him. And definitely someone with boxer/big dog experience. Sadly, he needs more time than we can me give him. Whatever happened to him in Ireland and at his previous owners has badly damaged him and he needs more time to decompress, he is a quick learner though. We had hoped when we took hm that we would be able to sort him out, sadly, we haven’t, I’d say another 6 months and he will be a different dog if someone is very firm with him. We also live in a very small bungalow and don’t have space outside where he can run. He would come with his muzzle, collar, lead etc. He has been neutered, this was done by us.
If you need anymore information on him let me know… oh, he walks quite well on a lead now, until he sees another dog. Many thanks, Eileen
