Have you got a puller? 😳

Puppies have no idea how to walk on a lead, and the outside world is super exciting and they want to explore it all at 100 miles an hour! 💨💨💨

Teaching a pup to walk on the lead takes time and also consistency. It’s no good if we want to lose weight and only go to the gym once a week but the rest of the time we veg out on the sofa 🤦‍♀️ And this goes for our pups.

If we want to show our puppies what to do when they are on the lead, it’s important to help them out when they are on the lead and set them up for success so the know what to do.

🐾 Use a harness for walking: this is a sign the walk is a “chilled, sniffy walk” so pup can pull a bit. When lead clips on collar, this is a “training walk” and pup needs to walk nicely on the walk and you will be doing some training too.
🐾 Walk in areas that have wide pavements and not too many leaves/berries/stones to help keep pup’s nose off the ground and prevent pulling
🐾 Provide lots of off lead time in a safe place to give your pup a chance to have a good run around and let off some steam without the restriction of the lead

What have you found worked with helping your pup who pulled on the lead?

A client came to me recently feeling completely stuck.

They had been doing everything right: training sessions, being consistent by following all the advice
but their dog was still struggling to settle and was still overwhelmed.

They thought they needed more training.

But when we took a step back, we came back to three key areas:

✅ Health
✅ Nutrition
✅ Daily enrichment

And once we started there, things began to fall into place.

Because if a dog isn’t feeling quite right, isn’t properly fuelled, or isn’t having their needs met day to day
they won’t be in the right place to learn or cope, no matter how hard you try.

This is the bit that often gets missed.

It’s about understanding what’s underneath the behaviour first.

That’s when real progress starts to happen.

If you’re feeling stuck with your dog, this is always where I begin. If you need more support in person, feel free to drop me a DM. 🐾

Happy Friday! 🎉

What are your plans for the weekend? Some nice walks? Perhaps some canicross? Or maybe a nice super chilled one? 😌

I’ll be getting my puppy class plans written up (there are still spaces if you want to join us, class starts next week! 🐶) and hopefully I will get time to fit in some horse riding. 🏇

Does your dog have a furry best friend?

While most dogs can live with other pets in the home, introductions should always been done carefully. 🐱

Some dogs will naturally have stronger prey drive than others and it’s important to know your dog and be able to set them up for success. 🙌

Management and consistent is key and if you need some support, drop me a DM. 📩

Do you have other pets in your home as well as your dog? 🐾

Did you see me on BBC Kent? 🙈

A great training day for our Guide Dog pups and we were escorted around Leeds Castle by the falconary team to make sure the ducks weren’t too stressed by the dogs (the swan didn’t like the look of us!).

Group real life training classes will resume in the summer when the weather is better 😎 This will involve walks through parks where there are dogs and birds, high streets, as well as a train trip into town and settling in cafes with a coffee ☕️

Next indoor puppy class will be on Friday mornings at Larkfield Village Hall, drop me a line if you want to join the waiting list 🐶
