Dog Lovers! Did you know...

Summer is a wonderful time! However, it is more dangerous for our beloved dogs than many people realise.

Walking your dog in 25° heat is the equivalent to you running a marathon in a fur coat. Skip the walk. A dog never died from not being walked, but many die from heat stroke.

Check the pavement temperature. If you can’t comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, its too hot for your dogs paws. Their paws can burn easily.

How to safely walk your dog in summer:

• Stick to shady areas
• Bring plenty of fresh cold water that you can offer to them throughout, the walk, not just at the end.
• Only go out early in the morning or late in the evening, not between 8 and 8), to avoid the hottest part of the day.
• Do short, slow walks, where they can sniff around a lot, rather than running or going very far. This is just as stimulating.
• Give them enrichment games at home, to keep them entertained. Wear out their brain, not their body.

How to keep your dog cool...

Do:
Keep fans on for them, curtains drawn, windows open. Put out cool mats (gel filled) for them to lay on. Put a paddling pool out for them to get in. Always ensure they have access to fresh, cold drinking water.

Dont:
Use cooling bandanas/coats, or a wet towel, unless you are constantly adding cold water to them. Anything that covers their skin heats up quickly and traps the heat in. Encourage them to run, either with you or for a ball. Remember they have a fur coat on. They are far more likely to suffer from heatstroke.

When taking your dog with you to a cafe or bar, and sitting outside, find shade, and give them a bowl of water.

It takes 6 weeks for dogs to adapt to a new climate. In the UK our temperature is very variable. So our dogs dont have a chance to get used to it. The dogs you see in hot countries are used to it. Our dogs are not.

I have many years of canine health & first aid training from vets. I want to spread understanding. Please share this knowledge with any other dog lovers you know!

Grass seeds are really dangerous to dogs. Check your dogs' ears and feet. They often get stuck at the deepest point between their toes, and they can be difficult to see. I am pulling quite a few out of dogs feet at the moment. They can travel up through the body and into their organs. So if you can't see it anymore, it may be worth getting a vet to check.

Did you know?...

It's best to start the grooming process as young as possible. As soon as the puppy has had its 2nd jabs.

Then start getting them used to a groomer. They need to build a bond, and trust that person. So switching from one groomer to another should be avoided if possible.

I build up their groom gradually. So the first visit would just be 15 mins, no grooming, just getting to know eachother. Then come back for about 30 mins, play, nail trim, play, get used to the sound of the clippers, hairdryer etc, tidy up around eyes, play again. And so on.

They won't just stand and let you do what you need to. They need to be trained to, and not to be scared of it, which takes time, which is why we say start as young as possible.

If you wait until they are knotty, the groom may hurt as we try to get the clippers or a brush through their coat. They will then become fearful of being groomed, and it becomes much more difficult.

Did you know...

Putting a cold wet towel, and cooling bandana cooling coat, or coving your dog IN ANY WAY is actually going to trap the heat in, unless you are constantly wetting them with cold water. The body heat warms up the water very quickly and makes them hotter!

The best thing is to let their skin breathe, a breeze is preferable.

Did you know...

It's often best not to wash your dog too often. Shampoo will take out the natural oils in the skin, so if you're doing it frequently it can cause dry, itchy skin.

I'd recommend not washing them any more than once a month, unless a vet has told you otherwise and prescribed a medicated shampoo.

You can rinse them off as often as you like, as the water isn't the problem.

If they are going in the sea, rinse them off as soon as possible, as the salty water will irritate and dry out their skin.
