It's time to 'fess up..

It shouldn't come as any surprise that, like all small businesses, things are tough at the moment.

Our sales have dropped massively this year but we have been determined to keep going. To do this it was decided that we needed to have a steady income. As a result, I have returned to employment after nearly 15 years of being self-employed.

The truth is for over a month, Sarah has been doing everything at Apawtiser. Baking, bagging up, dispatching orders - all her. And she's been doing an amazing job of it.

We wanted to share this so you, our customers, might appreciate why things maybe take a little longer than what you are used to. So you know why we haven't put out details of Halloween treats yet (we're working on it).

We never like to disappoint. We appreciate all the support we receive and are grateful for every order.

Mac was the inspiration behind Apawtiser Dog Treats.

When he was a pup, he was diagnosed with several allergies and food intolerances. We changed his diet completely but struggled to find treats he could have. If felt like everytime we found something, they would add/change an ingredient to something he was allergic to. Then there was all the different ingredients we couldn't identify. We were left with little choice but to make our own.

When we created Apawtiser we were determined to produce quality treats with high-quality ingredients that people recognise. Six years on, we're still using the same recipes that pups love and cutting out by hand. The only change is that we now use bigger mixers and lift bigger bags of ingredients.

How many treats do we need to sell each month to break even?

On top of the obvious costs of ingredients, electricity, rent, packaging etc., we have other costs you may not realise.

Legally, every recipe we sell has to be tested for its analytical constituents. What percentage is crude fat, crude protein, crude ash, moisture and crude fibre. Any dog treat manufacturer must be able to provide this information. The cost of these tests can be between £80 and £100 exc VAT. We've spent roughly £3500 on testing our products.

As a small business selling products to the public, we have to have Public Liability insurance as well as contents and building insurance.

We spend at least £45 a month on our trade waste collection. We also have to pay £3 for every kg over the 40kg we're allowed to dispose of. We can't use recycling centres and we can't dispose of waste at home.

We use website software, design software and accounting software risking £100 a month in subscription fees.

So in answer to our question... it's hard to say. The amount we make on our treats depends on the variety, whether it is a trade sale, bulk trade sale or direct to customers. But roughly we need to sell over 1000 bags a month just to break even, that's nearly 2 weeks of baking.
