🚨 Bird Flu Update – Please Read and Share 🚨
A few weeks ago, we were notified of a confirmed case of Avian Influenza (bird flu) just outside Andover. Sadly, we now have reason to believe the virus is spreading. This weekend we’ve received multiple reports of deceased waterfowl and others showing symptoms consistent with bird flu across three separate locations in Northampton. While these cases have not yet been officially confirmed, videos we've reviewed strongly indicate bird flu is likely. DEFRA has been contacted and is in the process of collecting the affected birds for testing.
This is extremely concerning. Bird flu is a devastating disease - and while it never truly disappears, research suggests larger outbreaks tend to occur every three years. With the last significant outbreak in our region taking place in 2022, we are preparing for what may be a very challenging few months ahead.
We are now activating strict protocols to protect the birds currently in our care and to minimise the risk of further spread. This includes:
⚠️ Limiting intake of new birds unless absolutely necessary.
⚠️ Not taking birds from their current environment - moving them to another area can risk spreading the disease further.
⚠️ Enhancing hygiene and biosecurity measures at SSHQ
Here’s how you can help:
❗️Feed local swans and waterfowl - providing food will help prevent birds from flying off in search of it, keeping them local plus a healthy bird has a better chance of surviving infection. Please try to scatter the food over a wider area to prevent crowding.
❗️Report any dead birds immediately to your local authority. Prompt removal is crucial to reduce the risk of transmission.
❗️Watch for symptoms:
- Lethargy or weakness
- Spinning in circles
- Twisting of the neck or head or odd, erratic movements.
- Blood or discharge from the eyes
Some swans may be asymptomatic carriers, meaning they look healthy but are still spreading the disease. This makes prevention and responsible action even more critical.
This is a heartbreaking situation, but with your support, we can do our best to limit the impact. Please remain vigilant, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you see something concerning.
