Jet/Maisie height check! 24th June ➑️ 30th April ➑️ 29th March ➑️ 16th February

Maisie has properly turned into a show cocker now. In the early days I thought she looked quite working line, but now her ears have dropped and she is sooooooo fluffy! She's also not too bothered about a tennis ball.

And the best thing is, I can't quite believe it, but Jet will *actually* play with her for a couple of minutes at a time. πŸ₯Ή He has never been a dog's dog, and I've always said he doesn't really know how to play, but Maisie is teaching him, and seeing him do some bouncy bows and soft bitey face with her is just a joy. After a couple of minutes he gets a bit "urgh that's enough now", but that's totally fair. Onwards and upwards. πŸ₯°

To all my gorgeous Doodle-mix owners (that's you Cockerpoos, Cavapoos, Maltipoos, and all the other 'poos!) 🐾

Does your puppy have some knots? Especially in their ears, and armpits? No judgement here - Jet gets knotty too, with his unruly spaniel feathers. And how does your puppy get on with you brushing out those knots? Honestly now, do they move themselves away from the brush? Do they lay firmly down, pressing themselves into the floor so you can't get to their belly? Do they try to bite the brush? All of these are signs that they're not super comfortable with the process.

The thing is, if we ignore these "please stop that" signals from them, they're not likely to just get used to it, they're likely to escalate those signals and potentially become less and less comfortable with other handling, such as nail clipping, vet checks, and vaccinations.

This is where my Happy Handling course comes in...

This course is for you if:
✨ You want vet visits to be as relaxed as possible.
✨ You want to improve communication between you and your dog.
✨ You want your relationship with your dog to be founded on trust and confidence.

🌟 Welcome to my latest gang of puppy legends 🌟

This adorable bunch started with me on Sunday.

We have two very interesting mix breeds here. Picture one and picture 2. They are both very different mixes. Can you guess?

The marvellous mix breed boys are called
🐾 Jasper
🐾 Cooper

Then we have 2 cockerpoos:
🐾 Honey
🐾 Maggie

Then last but not least, double trouble golden retrievers:
🐾 Gus
🐾 Casey

Follow along to see how they grow and what they learn over the next 6 weeks.

My next course starts on 6th July. Link in bio to book your spot. This class was full, so don't miss out!

🐾 Confessions of a dog trainer. 🐾

Did any of these surprise you? Which ones sound familiar?

I'm always learning and growing, striving to improve how I connect with dogs and their humans. So maybe some of these will change over time (except 7 and 8... those feel like core truths!). But this is where I'm at now and I'm pretty happy with it.

The dog sports thing... I'm not saying all dog sports are bad (as long as you play nicely πŸ˜‰), I'm just not a competitive person. I'm just not. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

So what is dog training to me? Consistency, patience, kindness. If you're bringing a new puppy home this year, I can help you to make sure you're stepping off on the right foot (paw). If you need help getting your dog comfortable for vet procedures, I have a great course for that starting on 6th July. And if your recall has gone a bit... flaky, give me a shout and I can troubleshoot it with you. Book a free discovery call and let's chat.

I have many more of these in my head so let me know if you want a part 2.

Thanks for the inspiration ❀️

β˜€οΈ Scorchio weather incoming! β˜€οΈ

My annual posting of this brilliant table from which I refer to myself all the time. The key point to note is the other factors on the right. If your dog is particularly young or old, a brachy type (meaning short-nosed, so Frenchies, pugs etc), or obese, they are going to find the heat more difficult and you need to take more care with them.

What can you do to keep your walks safe:

🌭 Test how hot the pavement before you go out. Don't over complicated this, just stand on it with bare feet or hold your bare hands on it for a bit, and if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for paws.

🌭 Walk at the start or very end of the day.

🌭 Pick walks in cooler areas, like in the woods or where there is a body of water.

🌭 Avoid excessive running. Leave the ball lobber at home πŸ˜‰

🌭 Do an indoor activity instead. No walk is better than an overheated pup.

SAVE THIS POST to refer to if you're unsure whether to take that walk.
