Today was a sad day for Blaircourt Pet Clinic as we said goodbye to Ri as she moves to a practice nearer to home 😥 Ri's journey at Blaircourt started on the equine side in October 2022, where she continued to work for a year and a half before changing paths and moving over to the small animals. Ri has been a great asset to the team, supporting her clients and treating her patients as her own 🥰 As I'm sure our lovely clients will agree, we are so sad to see her go, but so excited to see where the future takes her. We are all wishing her the best of luck and know her new practice is very lucky to have her ☺️

❗❗Trigger Warning - Graphic Images ❗❗

🎖️Brave Award 🎖️

Meet Molly, the gorgeous Greyhound who's had a really tough time lately, but still runs through the clinic doors like nothing has happened 🥰
Her bad luck began in May after having a tough recovery from surgery resulting in a hospital stay and very worrying few days. But this didn't knock Molly, and once she was well enough to go home to her lovely owner she was coming on leaps and bounds, which we were all so happy to see 🐕

Unfortunately on a late night walk, Molly got attacked by another dog resulting in a lot of bruising and a puncture wound to her chest.

We thought we'd show you some progress pictures along her recovery journey, to show the natural highs and lows of wound healing.

Due to Molly's previous sensitivities to GA drugs, ourselves and her owners understandably wanted to avoid this if possible. Luckily for us, Molly really is one of a kind. She tolerated everything from sutures to wound debridement (removal of dead tissue to aid healing) with local anaesthetic and even stood perfectly still everytime (as long as she got her well deserved treats after 🤣)

You can see how much the wound has improved and although it's not been easy it really does show the dedication of her amazing (and squeamish) owner, for being so diligent bringing her for multiple appointments weekly and following all instructions provided. The hard work has paid off and we all couldn't be happier for both Molly and her owners 🥰
Sadly for us as we will miss them both terribly, Molly and her mum made a big move to Devon on Wednesday. Although we are sad we won't be able to get our fix of Molly cuddles every week, we are so excited to see all the lovely adventures she will be going on. Just please Molly no more vet visits for a while 🤣

It was her 10th birthday yesterday 🥳 and I'm sure our wonderful clients would like to join the team in wishing her the happiest of birthdays 🎂

❗Planned Power Cut❗

Please be aware that there will be a power cut at the clinic tomorrow, Wednesday 23rd July, which is expected to last from 9am to 11am. The phone lines will be diverted but this will only leave one line open, so please be aware there may be a wait and to only call if you have an emergency. This will also mean staff will have no access to emails, so please bare with us and we will respond to any enquiries as soon as possible. Please also make sure that any medications are ordered today or tomorrow afternoon to avoid difficulties as we will be unable to access your pets accounts 🐶

Thank you for your patience and understanding 😊

🐱 Meet Enzo 🐱

He is a 6 month old Maine C**n, who is owned by Rhea, one of our equine receptionists. As you can see he is a lovely, chilled out boy ♥️ You may notice that his feet are a little different from most, this is due to him being Polydactyl (common with Maine C**ns') resulting in him having 6 toes on each foot and looking like he has little thumbs 👍 we think this adds to his cuteness 🥰 as most know Maine C**ns' can grow very large, with him being this size and weighing 4.5kg at 6 months we can't wait to see him fully grown 😀

❗ Warning: Grass Seed Season is Here❗

With the summer months upon us, we've sadly seen several dogs come in recently with grass seeds stuck in their ears, eyes, and between their toes — these little terrors can cause big problems if left untreated!

Here are some top tips to help keep your four legged friends safe:
▪️ Avoid long grass
▪️ Check your pets ears, eyes, mouths and feet after every walk
▪️If your dogs have long fur on their feet or ears, consider clipping them short over the summer months
▪️Consider buying a protective snood that covers their ears whilst on walks
▪️Keep up with regular grooming to catch any that may have got caught in your pets coat before they can get embedded in their skin

Signs to look out for 👀
▪️Holding their eye slightly or fully closed
▪️Sudden head shaking or head tilt
▪️Licking at their feet (you may see a small raised red lump)

Chilling into the weekend 😎 🐶🐱🐰🐭 😎

Here's some staff pets showing off how they beat the heat 🥵

🌞 Avoid the heat of the day by walking your dogs either early in the morning or late at night
🌞 Avoid walking your dogs on hot pavements (if you can't hold the back of your hand on the ground for 10 seconds it's too hot)
🌞 Be aware that artificial grass gets much hotter than normal grass
🌞 Use paddling pools, cool mats, cool coats and bandanas to help your pets stay cool
🌞 Provide your pets with their favourite frozen treats to keep them cool (there are plenty of great ideas online)
🌞 Apply suncream if your cats and dogs have any pink skinned areas (don't use human suncream, there are dog and cat specific ones online, but if you haven't used it previously only apply to a small area first incase of a contact allergy)
🌞 Ensure your outside rabbits and guinea pigs have shaded areas or consider bringing them inside if this isn't possible
🌞 Put frozen water bottles wrapped in a small towel in your pets hutches to cool their hutches and provide them an extra way to cool down
🌞 Make sure you are checking rabbits twice daily for signs of flystrike

We hope you and your four legged friends have a lovely weekend in the sun, and that our hot weather top tips will help people prepare🌡

🩺 May is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month! 🩺

We thought it would be the perfect time to highlight and celebrate the wonderful world of vet nursing, and give you a little insight into the daily roles involved.

Clients will often see nurses for help holding their wiggly pets in consults, admitting and discharging for surgeries and providing nutrition advice but there's a lot more they do behind the scenes. From taking bloods and x-rays, monitoring anaesthetics and keeping your pets happy and relaxed when they are inpatients. To supporting the vets in getting much needed diagnosis' and being there for clients through whatever that may be. They really can do it all 🩻💉💊

Most people won't know that Registered Veterinary Nurses, under the direction of a vet can perform some minor surgeries, including; dental scale and polishes, stitch ups and mass removals 😊

We think our wonderful nurses do a great job and treat each of our lovely patients as their own, and we'd hope our amazing clients agree 🥰

P.S. The puppy and kitten cuddles are a definite perk to the job 🤣

🥰 Warning - Cuteness Overload 🥰

The first photo is of little Henry when he was 11 weeks old and in for his 2nd vaccine, he was a superstar and definitely knew how to pose for the camera 🤣 the second photo is him at 16 weeks when he came in with his big brother Milo to get re-weighed and pick up more flea and worm treatment, as he is growing so quickly 😊

What a lovely matching pair, and how lucky Henry is to have such a chilled out big brother to learn the ropes from 🐾♥️

Little Ara, a 3-month-old Irish Setter was in 2 weeks ago due to being our first bee sting victim of the year 🐝 We are happy to report that after injections of antihistamines and steroids, her face was completely back to normal the next day, and she was back to her happy bouncy self 😊

Ara's owners acted brilliantly and quickly, and called us as soon as they noticed her squeak in the garden and her face beginning to swell. Most stings to our pets are painful but not cause for big concern, however if like Ara, your pet's face has been stung, it is best to get them straight in for an appointment as the swelling can affect their ability to breath.

If you think your pet has been stung, first look to see if there is a stinger left behind (identifying it as a bee sting). You can then use something like a credit card to get beneath the sting to pull it out, if you squeeze the area it can result in more venom being released. You can then gently clean the area and apply cold packs to help soothe the swelling, and continue to monitor any changes.

Please be aware that some pets can have allergic reactions to stings, with multiple stings being more serious, so if you're not sure its always good to give the clinic a ring and we can advise from there ☎️

🐶 Meet Agnes 🐶

Agnes is a lovely little 11 week old Rottweiler puppy who came in for her 2nd vaccine on Wednesday. Little Ara, the 3 month old Irish Setter definitely enjoyed the outside entertainment whilst she waited to have her 2nd vaccine the other week 😂 she was a very brave girl and we can't wait to see the lovely dog she grows into 🥰

Do any of our Equine clients recognise who's photo bombing in the background? 😂👀

📞 It's Veterinary Receptionist Awareness Week 📞

We would like to take this opportunity to highlight the hard work that goes into this role everyday. Janine is often the first person you will see when you walk into the clinic and the first one at the end of the phone when you're worried about your beloved pets. Whatever your pets come in for, she is always ready to greet everyone with a smile, to have a chat with you whilst you wait, to celebrate when your pet is doing well, and provide a box of tissues and shoulder to cry on when needed. We are sure our clients would agree, we think Janine does a brilliant job and we would like to thank her for everything she does for all the staff and your pets 🥰

Janine is currently taking a well deserved holiday, and I'm sure the team will agree with me that we can't wait for her return on Monday 😂
