Dog theft prevention measures
Hi there
A few of my clients are understandably concerned about the recent dog theft locally and several other local attempts to steal dogs from local gardens.
Whether the chalk and cable tie marking of properties is a prank or real we really do not know for sure in all cases, but after having done a lot of investigation I think that there are a couple of practical measures that we can take to limit our risk.
The dog thefts appear
to be from Gardens where there is access by a back, side or front gate. There have been reports of the dog thieves opening the back, front or side gate during the night or in the morning and when the owner lets the dog out The thief is waiting behind the gate to take the dog whilst the owner is unaware that the gate has been left open and is not paying attention to the whereabouts of the dog as they believe the gate to be securely closed.
I think a couple of measures could possibly be put into place to try and prevent this particular method:
1. Always check your gate is closed before letting your dog out even if you’ve just woken up or are going to bed.
2. Put a secure bolt on the gate halfway down your gate or at the bottom of your gate that cannot be accessed from the outside.
3. If access is needed from both sides of the gate you may consider a double sided push keypad lock which can be relatively inexpensively bought online perhaps? Link below:
Anyway I wish you all a good day and let’s keep our lovely pets safe - keep in touch! 🐶. Ali x
