May is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month!

We have a fabulous team of nurses within our equine team of Nicky, Harriet and Lucy.

You will most likely talk to Harriet over the phone as she keeps us organised every day looking after the diary, sorting our your insurance claims and helping the vets when she is needed with procedures. She also often helps with our small animal team at Woodbridge Out of Hours as well.

Nicky and Lucy are often seen out on the roads with our vets, helping with all sorts of procedures from medicating sacroiliac joints and hocks to biopsies and also doing some clicker training for some of our more nervous patients!

Our nurses all work incredibly hard and we want to take this moment to thank our team for all their hard work, we are incredibly lucky to have them on our team!

Summer is on it's way and it's looking to be another hot one this year!
The hot and humid weather can make horses lethargic and dehydrated so it is important we try to keep them as cool and comfortable as possible.

- Making sure there is plenty of access to fresh, clean water. If you have a horse who doesn’t drink a lot of water, a good way to increase water content can be done by soaking hay, using a mash containing electrolytes or adding extra water to their feeds💦
- If horses are being exercised it is best to exercise them first thing in the morning or later on in the evening when the temperatures are lower but also reducing the intensity of the work you are doing🐎
- Hosing horses off throughout the day can help to regulate their body temperature🌡️
- Having access to shaded areas, whether that be turning out overnight and in during the day or being in a field with lots of shelter throughout the day🌳
- Avoid travelling at the hottest points of the day, if horses need to be travelled make sure they have as much ventilation as possible and offer them water before, during and after the journey🚛

Signs of dehydration or heat-related illness:
- Fast breathing and nostrils flaring
- increased temperature >38.5'C
- Slow recovery after exercise or reduced performance when being exercised
- Muscle spasms
- Dark urine / reduced urination

If your horse is showing any signs of struggling with heat-related illness, contact your vet immediately, make sure they are in a shaded area and use the hose all over their body without drying it off. It can take around 15 minutes before you start to see an improvement in the clinical signs.

There has been a rise in Equine Influenza across the UK and the confirmed cases are continuing to increase.

Equine Influenza is highly contagious and can potentially travel up to 5km in the right conditions, the risk is likely to increase due to the time of year and the movement of horses with competition season up and running.

Typical signs of Influenza can include:
- Fever (>38.5'C)
- Persistent or harsh cough
- Nasal discharge
- Lethargy

The majority of confirmed cases are in unvaccinated horses or horses with unknown vaccination status. Whilst vaccinated horses are often showing much milder signs, some of the horses that have tested positive have gone longer than six months since their last booster or are still completing their primary vaccination course.

If you have a horse that is travelling regularly to competitions, staying away for camps or is on a yard that has horses regularly moving on and off site, speak with your vet.

As well as being up to date with vaccinations it is also important to be proactive with your biosecurity measures:
- Avoiding sharing equipment between horses
- Isolate new horses when they arrive
- Limiting horse-to-horse contact during outbreaks

If your horse is showing any signs of being unwell or develops symptoms, if you are unsure when your horse is next due their vaccinations or would like advice on booster timings, please contact your vet. Don't forget you need to have a 7 day clearance window between the date of vaccination and competition.

We are now testing your horse’s worm count samples in house. Using the latest technology that analyses the samples by AI and checked by humans, this gives us high levels of accuracy to determine your horse’s worm egg count🪱

We recommend doing a Faecal Worm Egg Count in the spring, summer and autumn, so when your horse is next due a 💩 sample, drop it in to us at Potash or our small animal reception at Woodbridge!

Introducing our Worm Count Packages for 2026🪱

We are now offering our own Worm Count Packages which include; 3 x Faecal Worm Egg Counts and an Equisal Tapeworm Saliva Kit for £57.50. This will provide you with everything you need for the year to help minimise the level of infective parasites on your pasture. All you have to do is collect a pack from us, collect your worm egg count samples throughout the year and then drop them back in to us. With the Equisal Tapeworm Saliva Kit, we will give you a free post bag to send it directly off to the lab and then we will receive the results.

Regular Faecal Worm Egg Counts help us to determine which horses we need to prescribe a wormer to on an individual basis and only treating the horses that are excreting a large amount of eggs.

We use the Equisal Tapeworm Saliva Kit to determine a horses level of tapeworm burden. By doing so, we are reducing the use of anthelmintic products (wormers) unless they are needed.
There is an increasing amount of resistance to wormers and it is imperative we protect these drugs so that they are effective when we need them.

If you would be interested in receiving a Worm Count Package please call us on 01394 380083 or visit us at Potash 😊

When your best friend comes to see us for a procedure and you come along for emotional support and to keep an eye on us to make sure we are looking after her!

This lovely mare came in for an ultrasound of her eye with Annabel and her good friend came along to keep her company! He didn't put a 'hoof' wrong and seemed to quite enjoy coming for a little trip to see us as well🐴

Rango presented to us due to multiple bucking episodes. Alex went out to see him and identified that he had significant back pain and subsequent x rays revealed impinging spinal processes (kissing spine). After discussions with his owners we opted to refer him to NEH for surgery on his spine and at that time it was found that he had sacroiliac disease as well. Following the surgery at NEH, a few weeks later he came back to us to have his SI medicated.
We are pleased to say that Rango is well on his way with rehabilitation and doing really well!😊
