Meet Kevin – a cheeky young bulldog and beloved companion of Iveta, one of our Client Care team members. Not only does Iveta look after you at reception, but she also manages our social media and monthly newsletter – and now, it’s Kevin’s turn to be in the spotlight! 📸🐶

On a morning walk, he suddenly became very flat and vomited multiple times – twelve times, to be exact. Knowing Kevin's very enthusiastic scavenging habits – especially his occasional taste-testing of garden plants 🌱 Iveta was absolutely convinced he’d helped himself to a bite of foxglove, a highly toxic plant to dogs.

🚨 The whole team at The Woodbridge Vets acted quickly and admitted Kevin for CT scan to check for any internal obstructions, and also ran comprehensive blood tests to assess Kevin’s organ function, hydration levels, and to look for any signs of infection or toxin exposure. Bloodwork is crucial in cases like this - it helps us identify or rule out serious issues such as kidney or liver damage, which can occur if a pet has ingested something toxic.

Thankfully, the CT scan showed no signs of a blockage, and his blood results came back normal. With supportive treatment, IV fluids, and medication, Kevin gradually began to perk up and even started eating small amounts again 💪

He’s now home, continuing with probiotics and gastrointestinal diet, while being closely monitored for any signs of toxicity or worsening tummy upset.

The good news? Kevin is doing much better – and Iveta is keeping a very close eye on him (and her garden)! 💚

🌼 Pet owner tip:
Many common garden plants – including foxglove, lilies, daffodils, and tulips – can be dangerous to pets if ingested. If your dog is a scavenger like Kevin, it’s a good idea to keep potentially toxic plants out of reach and always contact your vet straight away if you notice sudden vomiting, lethargy, or other concerning signs.

Meet Darcey – a sweet 14-year-old Labrador with a big heart… and an even bigger appetite! Darcey gave her family quite the scare when she managed to sneak not just one, but two sharp chicken satay skewers – sticks and all – right off the table! 😱🍗

Her worried owners rushed her straight to us, and after a thorough examination, we discussed the serious risks: the sharp sticks could have caused a gastric perforation or peritonitis, both life-threatening conditions. It was clear we needed to act fast and get the skewers out!

Darcey was admitted for a gastroscopy under general anaesthetic – a procedure where we use a camera to examine the stomach and, if possible, remove foreign objects without surgery.

And guess what? Our veterinary team successfully removed two intact skewers and even found a rogue raisin hiding in there too! All without the need for invasive surgery. Darcey recovered beautifully and was back on her paws in no time 🐶💪

We’re so proud of Darcey for being such a star patient, and we’re grateful her family acted so quickly! 💚

What’s the takeaway for pet parents?
Even seemingly harmless snacks or leftovers can pose serious risks. Always keep skewers, bones, and other sharp items out of reach - and if you suspect your pet has eaten something dangerous, call your veterinary practice immediately.

Brodie’s Big Adventure (and an Even Bigger Comeback!) 💙

Meet Brodie, a sweet and lively Lurcher who ran into trouble during an off-lead adventure through Sutton Heath. After coming up very lame on her right front leg, her owner suspected she may have fallen into a rabbit hole - but due to Brodie’s size, getting her back wasn’t easy.

That’s when our lead nurse Elodie and Joan (known as the sausage lady) stepped in. They headed out to safely rescue Brodie and bring her back to the practice as quickly and gently as possible🚑

Brodie, with her lovely long legs, had unfortunately fractured both her radius and ulna - the two long bones in a dog’s forelimb that are vital for bearing weight, stability, and movement. This was confirmed by radiographs taken shortly after her arrival at the practice.

Thanks to the skill of our orthopaedic surgeons Simon and Laurie, and the support of our incredible veterinary nursing team Claudia and Lauren, Brodie underwent a successful surgical repair. Her radial fracture was reduced and plated using a hybrid plate; the ulna was also well aligned. Bone graft material was added to support healing, and a splint and bandage were applied for recovery.

Post-operative radiographs showed excellent alignment and strong internal fixation of Brodie’s leg. She has recovered very well from her procedure and has been endlessly receiving plenty of love and rest while she continues to heal.
We can’t thank our amazing team enough for acting so quickly and compassionately to give Brodie the very best chance at a smooth recovery 💙🐾

Meet Monty! 🐾 Monty is a 5-month-old Burmese boy who recently came in for his neutering procedure. He was admitted by our lovely locum vet Sophie, and Monty took everything in his stride like a true little gentleman! 💙🐱

Monty recovered really well while staying with us - he was calm, comfortable, and enjoyed lots of attention from the nursing team. We made sure he had a cosy space to rest and, of course, a few extra cuddles along the way!

Before heading home, Monty was also sent off with his parasite treatments to keep him protected and in tip-top shape as he continues growing into a happy, healthy young cat 💙

Meet Jack, a distinguished gentleman Whippet who recently came in with some lameness in his left forelimb. After a careful examination, our vet Kyle found stiffness in his shoulder and elbow, but his wrist had good movement and there were no issues with his paws 🐾

To get a clearer picture and investigate further, Jack had a CT scan under sedation. We're happy to report no fractures, joint damage, or tumors - the likely cause is a soft tissue injury, which can be treated with care and time. As Jack had a sensitive tummy after a previous sedation, we took extra steps like pre-anesthetic bloodwork and have delayed his anti-inflammatory medication to be safe.

Jack is now resting at home, starting physiotherapy, and being lovingly looked after - not just by his humans, but also by his two fellow Whippets 🐶🐶🐶
A true gentleman and he’s in excellent company! 💜

This is Bertie! 🐾 While Bertie technically belongs to our Client Care Team member Freddie’s grandma, Bertie spends most of his time with Freddie - going on adventures, expoloring, and enjoying walks in nature, including a recent trip to the Lake District! 🏔

Bertie came to us as an emergency after suddenly developing unproductive dry retching during a forest walk. He was seen by our locum vet Sophie, who gave him a thorough check over. When listening to his heart, she detected a murmur.

To investigate this further, Bertie was booked in for an echocardiogram with our vet Kyle, who has a particular interest in cardiology. The scan confirmed that Bertie has Mitral Valve Disease (MVD), Stage B1. MVD is a common heart condition in dogs where the mitral valve doesn't close properly, causing a heart murmur.
Stage B1 means the murmur is present, but there’s no significant enlargement of the heart. At this stage, medication isn’t usually needed, but regular monitoring is important to watch for any changes.

Bertie is now back to his usual self and enjoying his adventures with Freddie - what a star and what a brave boy! 💙🐶

This is Marge! 🐱 Marge belongs to our vet Kyle and his fiancée Sophie, who is also one of our wonderful locum vet. Marge is a very adventurous cat, and she recently came home with an injury to her lateral tarsus - which needed clipping and cleaning.

The lateral tarsus refers to the outer (or external) side of the ankle joint in cats. It’s the part of the hind leg that’s opposite the inside (medial) side, connecting the lower leg bones to the foot.

As we know Marge has a bit of a “spicy” personality, she was given some calming medication before her visit to help her relax and allow us to examine her wound safely and thoroughly.

As you can see from the photos, Marge made herself right at home in our cat-friendly enclosure - calm, comfortable, stress-free and clearly approving of the service! 💜🐾

This is Delilah! 🐾 She's a one-year-old Cavapoo who came to The Woodbridge Vets for a consultation with our vet, Simon. Delilah had been experiencing some discomfort in her ear and was shaking her head quite a bit.

Simon recommended having a proper look down both ear canals - during the summer months, those pesky little grass seeds can cause all sorts of trouble!🌾

Delilah was admitted and given a light sedation so we could get a thorough look into both ears. Just a few minutes later, she was already feeling much better, as Simon found and succesfully removed a grass seed from her left ear. He also carefully checked her other ear to make sure there were no more surprises hiding.

Once Delilah had recovered from her sedation, she enjoyed a quick lunch with us and was ready to head home. What a lovely and well-behaved little lady she is - an absolute star! 🌟💕

This is Benley. Bentley came to see us after his owner noticed him shaking his head – a common sign of ear discomfort, especially during grass seed season 🌾
Grass seeds can easily get lodged in ears (especially in those long-eared and fluffy ones), paws, or between toes causing irritation, pain, or even infection if left untreated.

Bentley was examined by our vet Emma, who discovered a grass seed tucked inside his ear. Luckily, our veterinary nursing team is fully trained in removing these pesky seeds safely and gently. In this photo, you can see nurses Claudia and Lauren, with Claudia assisting and Lauren giving Bentley some well-earned cuddles and comfort during the procedure 💛

🌾 A quick reminder for pet owners: During grass seed season (typically late spring through summer), it’s really important to give your pets a good check over after walks – especially if they’ve been in fields, meadows or overgrown grassy areas. Please pay close attention to:

🌾 Ears (look out for head shaking or scratching)
🌾 Paws and between toes (look out for excessive licking or swollen paws)
🌾Armpits and groin area
🌾Eyes and nose

International Cat Day 🐱😻

International Cat Day is celebrated every year on 8th August. It was established in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), one of the world’s largest animal welfare and conservation charities. IFAW works globally to rescue individual animals, protect entire species, preserve natural habitats, and advocate for stronger animal protections.

Since 2020, the custodianship of International Cat Day has been passed to International Cat Care, a British not-for-profit organisation that has been dedicated to improving the health and welfare of domestic cats around the world since 1958.

This special day is all about raising awareness for our feline friends and learning more about how we can support and care for them. At The Woodbridge Vets, while we typically see lots more dogs than cats (purely because of the numbers of each we have registered with us!), we always enjoy seeing cats come through our doors! We understand that cats are unique in both their personalities and their needs, and we’re committed to ensuring they receive the highest standard of care in a calm, stress-free environment.

We’re proud to share that we have recently gained Cat Friendly Clinic Accreditation, a recognition awarded by the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM). This means our team has taken extra steps to understand feline behavior, reduce stress during visits, and tailor our environment and approach specifically for cats. From dedicated cat-only waiting areas to handling techniques designed to keep them calm and comfortable, we’re continually working to improve the experience for our feline patients and their owners.

Whether it’s a routine check-up, a health concern, or just advice on how to care for your cat at home, we’re here to help. Every cat that comes through our door is treated with the respect and gentle care they deserve 😻

Meet Buddy! 🐶 He's a one-year-old Cocker Spaniel who recently came in to see our vet, Simon. Buddy had been limping on his front foot for a little while, and despite checking him over a few times, we couldn’t find anything obvious - just a small hole with a bit of pus.

To make sure there wasn’t a hidden foreign body causing the problem, we decided to perform a CT scan of his foot. Buddy was given a light sedation and had both the scan and an exploratory investigation done.

We got the results back later that day and - good news! No foreign body was found on the CT scan. Buddy was such a brave boy throughout the whole process, and as you can see, he was very thankful for all the love and care Lauren gave him 💕

Lauren has a Spaniel of her own, so she’s always had a soft spot for the breed - and especially for Buddy! He definitely soaked up the extra snuggles, treats, and kisses 🐾💕

Willow is a lovely 4-year-old Labrador who was diagnosed with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease – one of the most common causes of hind-leg lameness in dogs, caused when this important knee-stabilising ligament becomes weakened or torn.

To restore comfort and mobility, Willow underwent a TPLO procedure (Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy) on her right hind leg - a gold-standard procedure that helps stabilise the joint and allows for better long-term recovery.

The surgery was successfully performed by our experienced veterinary surgeons, Laurie and Simon. This has become a routine procedure for the pair, and a regular part of the orthopaedic services we offer here at The Woodbridge Vets. They confirmed Willow’s CCL was completely torn, and the procedure went smoothly.

We’re pleased to report that everything went smoothly and Willow is now well on her way to recovery 🤎🐾
