What's the weirdest accident you've had with your dog?

Once, I came back from a hard day at work and made a cuppa, greeted the dog and leaned mack, eyes closed and resting my tea on my belly for a second. All was calm. Silent. I was letting the stress of my day drain from me. I sighed. Then suddenly Fennel jumped up at the widow and barked.
I threw a full cup of hot tea into my face and all over myself from the shock of being rudely awakened from my meditation.

I said some words.

Maybe squealed a little.

Dogs are full of fun times aren't they?

Another time I had just decided to leap over a puddle. You know the ones, you're walking through a muddy woods, it's early autumn and it's been raining heavily. The path suddenly narrows to a couple of feet and there's 6 feet of bramble on both sides.
You decide if you jump from one side you can clear the puddle with ease.

You decide to take to leap, you use all you might and even take a little run up for extra speed...and while you are in mid air, legs splayed....THIS is when your dog appears from behind you. Charging at full pelt to shoulder barge you in your leading leg. This nonconsentual body contact flips you 180 degrees but you are still travelling in the same direction.....towards the brambles.

Another time I said some words. I was picking those brambles out of my hands for hours.

This blood in the picture didn't come from a dog attack....it was a complete accident but I can totally understand how it happens! Poor woman and poor dog!

NO FACES NEAR FACES..
I say this lots as I work with families that need help getting their dog used to children in the household. I give this advice as it can prevent bite incidents.

Dogs often don’t like faces right near theirs as it’s not how they communicate and they can find it confrontational and quite intimidating. Also, if we are going to have an incident and a dog snaps, the last thing we want is a bite to the face 😢

To avoid bite incidents children’s faces should NEVER be near a dogs face- no lying down on the sofa with heads together, no leaning over the dog to kiss them, no toddlers popping up to face height of a dog on a sofa, no toddlers crawling towards dogs on dog beds etc.

If a dog gets worried and tries to use distance increasing behavior- a growl, or even an air snap to ask the child to move away, it’s a huge worry of faces are anywhere near the dogs face. It’s a totally avoidable source of risk.

It’s also good advice for adults too! This photo is just a tiny amount of the blood that came out of my head two years ago as I had an accidental injury from my northern inuit.

I feel asleep with my head on her chest (as I often do, completely ignoring my own advice 😳), as she’s really cuddly and likes it. She woke up and did a huge open mouthed sneeze (she’s quite a dramatic sneezer)… and a canine tooth went into the top of my head. She has humongous canines and it caused a wound in my scalp that poured and poured with blood. My house looked like a crime scene.

Totally accidental, it was just a sneeze, but it could have been even worse. Hurt my head (lots) and also hurt her tooth but it could have been my face. It’s made me really remind my kids not to put their faces right next to the dogs (and my dogs LOVE my kids).

We also model for our kids with our own behaviour and it’s no good us telling out kids not to put their head on the dog if we are doing it ourselves!

So really- NO faces near faces and NO faces exceptions (even for me and I’m trying hard to stick to it!)

I also still startle every time Sylvi sneezes and that’s two years later!

It's always good to have a stash of things in my van for hot summery weeks like this one.

I think this watermelon cooling mat was £3 from B&M a couple of years ago and it's never had much use.

I have been folding it in half with two ice packs for a minute or two to keep it extra cold. To think the boys weren't sure about it at first!

But now they are waiting for their turn on it and even trying to all get on it at once, if there's no space I am getting whimpered at to tell the users to stop hogging it!

£3 well spent!

Just to clarify something following comments on my recent post.

I speak about licensing and proper checks so often because I genuinely care about people getting the right help for their pets and not unknowingly placing them in situations that could jeopardise their welfare.

Unfortunately, many of my own training clients have previously been let down by people operating without the correct licensing, insurance or legal requirements in place. By the time owners realise, the damage is often already done.

For the avoidance of doubt, I do not offer home boarding services myself, so there would be absolutely nothing for me to “poach” clients for, despite the accusation made this morning.

If people do ask me for boarding recommendations, I recommend businesses I have personally checked out and feel comfortable suggesting, including:
• In the doghouse by Dawn
• Platinum Pet & Home Care
• Home from home pet boarding
• Paws and Hearts
• Jay’s Pawsome Boutique
…and others.

My posts are not about tearing down businesses or creating fear. They are about encouraging owners to do proper checks instead of assuming a Facebook recommendation automatically means somebody is licensed and operating correctly.

It is disappointing that trying to educate and help people is sometimes met with accusations of ulterior motives. A huge amount of unpaid time goes into sharing information that is ultimately there to protect pets and support owners in making informed decisions.

Some days it does make me wonder whether it’s worth posting at all.

But today isn’t one of those days. 🐾
