โ—A quick reminder to all veterinary staffโ—

As we head deeper into fungi season, we are currently experiencing a high volume of daily calls regarding mushroom ingestions.

There are more than 4000 species of fungi in the UK. While the majority cause only mild signs, certain species can lead to severe complications such as hepatic and renal failure, coagulopathy, convulsions and even death. In order to ensure an accurate identification is achieved, we work closely with a mycologist who can analyse images to ensure that the treatment advice is tailored specifically for the animal.

So what do we recommend you do if you take a call about an animal that has recently ingested a mushroom?
๐Ÿ„ If within 2 hours AND/OR the patient is symptomatic, they must be seen. Please do not recommend Animal PoisonLine for these patients.
๐Ÿ„ If possible, ask the owner to take a picture of the mushroom before picking it to bring in with the pet. Ensure the mushroom is picked as close to the bottom of the base as possible.
๐Ÿ„ Call VPIS for treatment advice. We will be able to advise you on the best course of action and begin the identification process.

โ˜Ž๏ธ Please contact VPIS on 0207 3055 055 if you require treatment advice and identification for a case.

These novelty items are readily available and often chewed/ingested by animals around Halloween and Guy Fawkesโ€™ night. They consist of polyethylene tubing filled with a liquid mixture that gives off a light of various colours. There are normally two components to the mixture, a luminescer (mostly dibutyl phthalate), and an activator. The chemicals are of low toxicity, and the quantity ingested is usually small due to the unpleasant taste. As a result, systemic effects are not reported from accidental exposure to these types of products. The chemicals are irritant and cause discomfort, and the clinical features reflect this; typically, hypersalivation and foaming/frothing of the mouth is seen with immediate onset with possible hyperactivity and aggressive behaviour. Splashes in the eye will cause irritation.

Washing the mouth out or giving a treat to take the taste away is usually all that is required. Irrigation of the eye may be needed for ocular exposure.

In all cases reported to the VPIS where follow up data has been returned, all animals had uneventful recoveries.

โš ๏ธWe are commonly called about animals who have been intentionally given ibuprofen by their owners who are completely unaware of the dangers it may pose - we hope this post highlights those risksโš ๏ธ

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is commonly used in people for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with aches and pains, headache, cramps and for the relief of mild fever.

Dogs are particularly sensitive to the effects of ibuprofen, although other animals can be just as affected too. Ibuprofen can affect the gastrointestinal tract and the kidneys and can cause neurological signs and liver damage too dependent on the dose. The clinical signs of ibuprofen poisoning can include:

โ—Vomiting (may be bloody)
โ—Diarrhoea (may be bloody)
โ—Black, tarry stools
โ—Abdominal pain
โ—Lethargy
โ—Weakness
โ—Tremors
โ—Seizures

๐Ÿ“žIf you suspect your pet has been exposed to ibuprofen, call the Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 for advice. Please ensure you have an up to date weight for your pet. Veterinary professionals can call VPIS on 0207 305 5055.
