🎃Halloween hazards (decorations, sweets, pumpkins, candles)🕯️

Halloween can be fun, but it’s worth keeping an eye out for things that could harm curious cats. Chocolate, raisins, and sweets with xylitol are all toxic, even in small amounts, and should be kept well out of reach. While cats aren’t usually drawn to sweet treats, just a nibble could lead to vomiting, tremors, or even organ damage 🍬

🎃Carved pumpkins are safe in small amounts and can even be a healthy snack — but spiced pumpkins can upset your cat’s stomach, and it’s best to dispose of any pumpkins quickly once they start to rot. Candles and decorations are fine too, as long as they’re out of paw’s reach. Most cats find being dressed up in costumes to be stressful, rather than fun.

👻Halloween can mean lots of comings and goings at the door, with parties or trick-or-treaters. These can be stressful for cats, and also offers opportunities for escape. If you have an indoor-only cat, take special care around this time to keep them secure. Always make sure your cat’s microchip details are up-to-date. To help your cat feel calm, offer them a quiet, secure, cosy spot indoors where they can escape the noise.

We’re very sorry to report that a deceased entire male ginger and white cat has been brought into our practice.
He is microchipped, but sadly there are no owner details attached.

If you think he may be yours, please call us on 01993 772627

Throughout November we are supporting the Animal Medicines Amnesty, the aim of this campaign is to encourage pet owners to return any out of date or unused pet medicines to the practice for safe disposal, which will avoid contamination of the environment and help prevent medicine resistance due to inappropriate disposal.

If you have any unused or out of date pet medicines please drop them into the practice and we can dispose of them accordingly.

Thankyou!

🎆 FIREWORKS 🎆

With firework season fast approaching preparation is the key! Over 80% of owners notice a change in their pets behaviour during firework celebrations.

If you have any concerns coming up to fireworks night, please contact the surgery on 01993 772627 where a member of the veterinary team will be more than happy to help.

Below are some over the counter products you could try and can be purchased from the surgery or online via our shop. We recommend testing any product in advance of fireworks to see if the product is suitable for your pet.

🐶Adaptil® calm diffuser is a synthetic copy of the pheromone a puppy's mother emits after birth to calm and reassure her puppies. These pheromones can have this same calming effect on adult dogs in stressful situations.

🐱Feliway is a product that comforts and reassures cats and kittens and reduces signs of stress such as urine spraying, scratching, fighting or hiding. It can be purchased in a spray bottle or as a plug-in diffuser. Feliway for cats works by emulating the natural pheromones released by a mother cat to calm her kittens.

🐶🐱Vetpro calming support is the natural solution for pets that get stressed or anxious during fireworks, at louds noises, have separation anxiety, when travelling, during vet visits & kennel stays or other stressful situations. These are capsules which can be given whole or opened and sprinkled onto food.

🌰Acorns and conkers

Fresh acorns contain tannins that can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach pain in dogs — it’s unpleasant enough for your dog if they eat just one, but in large or repeated amounts they may harm the liver or kidneys. They can also trigger pancreatitis in some cases. Every few years, all the oak trees in an area will ‘mast’, which means they drop many more acorns than usual. You’ll need to be even more careful when the oak trees near you are masting.

Conkers (horse chestnuts) are mildly toxic, but the more serious risks are choking or gut blockages due to their size. Puppies are especially at risk, as they tend to explore with their mouths. To stay safe, keep dogs on a lead near oak or horse chestnut trees, discourage foraging, and clear fallen nuts from your garden.

🐾 Meet Nya 🐾

Nya visited the practice for her annual health check and vaccinations. During her comprehensive clinical examination, a cracked tooth was identified. As is often the case, her owner was unaware of the issue, as Nya had not displayed any obvious signs of pain or discomfort.

Undetected dental problems can progress to pain, infection, and other complications if left untreated. This highlights the importance of routine preventative care, such as annual health checks and vaccinations, in maintaining long-term wellbeing. Nya’s visit is a great example of how proactive healthcare enables us to identify and address concerns before they become more serious.
