This sunny warm weather is lovely but we must remember to take care of our furry friends. Pets overheat quickly in the sun, especially older animals and short-nosed dog breeds.
To keep your pet cool follow some simple rules:
• Always provide fresh water, including on walks and in your cat's favourite resting place.
• Only walk dogs in the mornings and evenings when there is less sun; as well as overheating, their pads can easily burn on the pavement.
• Use a paddling pool to help dogs cool down and ensure they stick to the shady areas.
• If they need cooling down then it is better to wet their coats and paws (with cool, not cold, water) than to use wet towels as the water in the towel will rapidly heat to match their body temperature.
• Take care to provide shade for rabbits in their hutches and runs.
• Never leave any animal locked in a car, temperatures soar in a matter of minutes and the heat is rapidly fatal.
• Cats often will prefer to eat late at night.
If your pet shows any of the following signs then contact us immediately - excessive panting, red gums, vomiting or collapse.
