Billy has been learning all about responsible pet ownership at Pets at Home 🐾

Mum Katy booked four-year-old Billy into a My Pet Pals workshops at our Cortonwood pet care centre as a free summer activity. These fun workshops explore the five animal welfare needs, helping kids learn how to care for a variety of pets, dive into exciting activities, and meet our store pets.

Katy, who shares her family adventures as on Instagram, said: “I wasn't sure if Billy would be too young for it but the lady who worked with it engaged with him really well. He said he liked meeting the guinea pigs and feeding the fish. He even wanted to name the guinea pig Billy!

Owner Mercedes says that it was “love at first bite” for nine-week-old Millie and her new best friend, Bertie Bear.

During last week’s heatwave, Mercedes popped into Pets at Home Hedge to pick up a puppy pool and cooling mat when she spotted the Bertie Bear flattie. Since bringing him home, he has blossomed into Millie’s favourite companion.

Mercedes said, “We just knew that we had to have Bertie! When we brought him home, Millie’s tail was wagging and it was love at first bite. She sinks her teeth into his soft bear face and gets so excited by the little squeak. Then she playfully shakes the crinkly part and proudly runs around the living room with him. She even takes him in the car with her and snuggles her face into him. They’re the best of friends.”

Parent’s are loving the free My Pet Pals workshops at Pets at Home this summer!

Mum Samantha, who shares her parenting tips as on Instagram, brought her son Harrison to a workshop and said he loved feeding the fish.

Meanwhile, six-year-old Luna visited our Washington pet care centre with mum Emma, who posted on : “The Pets at Home advisor we had was so lovely, it was a small group but she was so lovely with the kids explained a lot and was really friendly. We learned all about guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, bugs & fish. Totally recommend it. We have done it a few times now and it’s really worth it!”

When ten-year-old Diff was too ill to travel to a specialist referral centre for surgery, Vet Elliot at Vets for Pets Hereford for the surgery to take place at the practice.

Diff had a serious issue with his airways, causing him to struggle to breathe when stressed, leading to several near-death experiences. He urgently needed surgery, but the 45-minute drive to the specialist centre was too risky. Thankfully, Elliot sprang into action. He said, “Such a big surgery usually requires hospitalisation for monitoring, but Diff was unlikely to survive the car journey. I arranged for the specialist surgeon to perform the surgery here at Hereford, on the condition that I would watch Diff overnight.”

Diff is now safely back at home with owner Louise and doing well. Louise said, “It was so scary when Diff had a collapsing episode. I didn’t know if he would come back or if I was saying goodbye. If Elliot hadn't offered to keep an eye on him, there wasn’t going to be a surgical option. Elliot is total magic; I can’t thank him and the team enough.”

A huge thank you to all of our amazing customers for supporting the Pets Foundation Blue Cross UK Summer Appeal 💚💙

Together, we’ve raised an incredible £353,982 to help people and pets in need across the UK. We’ve been blown away by the generosity of our customers, colleagues, and charity partners who have been showing their support in our stores throughout the month.

Eileen from Friends of Animals Wales which is partnered with Pets at Home Llantrisant, shared how this support will make a difference: “The monetary donations will be used by us to purchase food for our Pet Food Bank. We started our Pet Food Bank in lockdown and the need has never lessened. In fact it has increased with more pet owners struggling to afford to feed their pets. Through the support we receive from working with the Pets Foundation and Blue Cross initiative we have been able to ensure more animals stay in their homes where they are cherished and loved.”

As well as helping local pets as vet and practice owner at Vets4Pets Lisburn Longstone Anna volunteers with British Divers Marine Life Rescue to save marine wildlife.

Anna’s passion for marine mammals began at 16, when she helped a Marine Biologist raise some seal pups. Since then, she has trained twice with British Divers, to volunteer as a Marine Mammal Medic, where she responds to calls for distressed porpoises, seal pups, and more.

Anna, who opened the practice ten years ago, said, “There’s a lot of coastlines where I’m based, and I always want to be able to help and educate myself further. If you find a stranded marine mammal, please do not approach. They can carry diseases, and you may also cause more harm by trying to help. The best thing to do is to contact British Divers. If you would like to be more involved, anyone can volunteer their time.”

With the school holidays in full swing, mum Danielle set herself a challenge to plan some fun, no-spend days with her kids - and she recommends the free My Pet Pals workshop at Pets at Home.

Danielle’s been sharing her tips for the summer holidays over on Instagram (), and on day two of her challenge she visited Pets at Home Sudbury with eight-year-old Lincoln and five-year-old Hudson for one of our fun, educational workshops.

Danielle wrote, “Honestly cannot recommend it enough! You book your local workshop online and it's a complete free 45 minutes on entertainment! And they get sent away with a little box of activities too.”

Thirteen-year-old Henry has been reunited with his owners after being missing for six years, thanks to the detective work of receptionist's pet care advisors Carly and Robyn from Vets for Pets Gillingham.

When kind members of the public brought Henry into the practice, his microchip revealed he’d been missing for years, but the contact details were out of date. Armed with just his name and the owner’s first name, Carly and Robyn called nine other practices in the area until they tracked down his family.

Owner Tillie said, “When Henners first went missing, we tried everything; we put items of ours outside with our scent, walked around the neighbourhood, posted pleas on Facebook and registered him as missing via his chip. But in the six years, there wasn't a single sighting. It was horrible when it became longer and longer since I last saw him. After a few years, I’d assumed that he must be dead. I was in total shock when I received the call! My children and I are so happy to have our cat back.”

Ten-month-old Rosie is spending her summer exploring rural Scotland in her Noble harness from Pets at Home.

So far this year, Rosie has already visited iconic Kelpies sculpture in Falkirk and enjoyed her first beach experience in Lossiemouth. And owner Caitlin has plenty more summer plans in store.

Caitlin said, “Rosie is out and about all the time. We take her new places most days, including at dog friendly shops and cafes. Over the summer, we're heading to other rural locations across Scotland so she can explore and see new places.”
