Here at Marwell our mission is to connect everyone with the natural world. Through the Children and Nature Project in Dghoumes Village, Tunisia, we’re helping children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience nature to explore, learn and build a lasting relationship with the world around them. By spending time outdoors, discovering wildlife and understanding their environment, these young people are empowered to protect nature for generations to come. 💚

Delivered in collaboration with Ecole de la Nature de Branféré (France), Réseau Enfants de la Terre (Tunisia) and the Direction Générale des Forêts (Tunisia’s statutory body for national parks and reserves), and generously funded by Fondation de France, this project shows the power of partnership in creating meaningful change. 🌍

Earlier this year, our teams took a trip to Sidi Toui National Park, Tunisia, continuing vital work to protect the Endangered slender-horned gazelle.🌍

After last year's success building five new animal management areas, this year our team built two more.

We also worked with the Direction Générale des Forêts (DGF) in Tunisia to modify the animals spaces at El Gonna National Reserve, which also houses gazelles. Together, this work helps secure a healthy source population within the species’ native range – an essential step should future conservation translocations be needed.

Every project like this brings us closer to a safer future for wildlife. 💚

New babies that made the year extra wild 🐾

2025 was an incredible year for new arrivals at the zoo, from tiny reptiles and primates to larger species like banteng and a very special okapi calf.

It was also a standout year for our Birds team, with successful arrivals including crested wood partridge, blue-faced honeyeaters, Mount Omei babblers and silver-eared mesia.

Some were big, some were small – but every one of them made a huge difference to conservation.💚

Have you seen any of our new arrivals throughout the year?

Our Story

Just by visiting Marwell Zoo (owned and run by conservation charity Marwell Wildlife) you’ll be making a big contribution to our projects to conserve species and habitats both in Hampshire and around the world.

Marwell Zoological Park was opened to the public by John Knowles in 1972. Established as a conservation and breeding centre, the park planned to give visitors the opportunity to see rare and interesting animals in a unique setting. Back then, the park was divided into four zones: Eurasia, America, Africa and Australia. In 1978 Marwell Zoo came under the ownership of a charitable trust and since then, the zoo has come a long way. Gradually adding to its collection and welcoming the arrivals and births of a number of endangered species, Marwell has always been dedicated to conservation and breeding efforts. We’ve even had a few Royal visits!

Today, Marwell’s 140-acre park is home to an incredible range of exotic and endangered species, in beautiful, landscaped surroundings. Guests can wander into the bush in the company of wallabies; step into Africa for an encounter with giraffes; and even come face-to-face with Rica, the Linne’s two-toed sloth, in the magnificent Tropical House. ‘Energy for Life’ Tropical House opened in 2018 and is Marwell’s biggest exhibit to date. Hot on the heels of Wild Explorers, this innovative and sustainable exhibit marks the second phase of a £17million investment programme at Marwell over the next decade, creating improved habitats for animals and more immersive experiences for guests. Spanning two levels with fantastic vantage points, guests can experience face-to-face encounters with a diversity of wildlife and exotic plants in a tropical climate, while learning about the flow of energy through life.

If you’re loopy for lemurs, be sure to look out for Lemur Loop – A walkthrough exhibit including several species of lemurs, a great way to immerse yourself in their exciting environment. Guests can see the loveable lemur troop through the indoor viewing area in the Evolution Hub and can walk alongside the adorable lemurs in their outdoor walkthrough area.
