Here's a couple of frequently asked questions and my answers that I get when people enquire about my classes:

❓Can my partner come to class with us?

Yes, we welcome partners, family members and friends to attend. It helps if you are all singing from the same hymn sheet to prevent confusion to the dog.

❓Would it be okay for the children to come to class?

We welcome children to attend the classes as we believe it is important for them to learn how to behave around dogs and to help them build a relationship. We do ask that they are well behaved and don’t approach the other dogs on their mats.

❓My puppy has only received his first vaccination. Are we ok to attend classes?

Yes. We welcome puppies after their first vaccination because positive socialisation is crucial at this stage of a pups life. You are welcome to carry your puppy in and out of class to minimise the risk. You are given an area to sit which is considered a safe zone where you won't be approached by others.

❓Why do you use food to train a dog?
Food is a brilliant reinforcer and for most dogs they love it! If you are worried about overfeeding your dog you can cut back on their dinners or use their dinners to train with, if they will work for it. The more reinforcers you can use to mark wanted behaviours the more your dog will offer them again. Other reinforcers can be used, and we do use toys as well from time to time, but in a classroom environment it is one of the easiest to use.

❓Can we continue with training after we have finished our course?

Absolutely. We strongly recommend you do so. You wouldn’t send a child to primary school and then expect them to go to work. Training and socialisation is a life-long journey and there is only so much we can fit into a 6-week course. I email you during your current course with the offer to attend a follow on course.

As many of you know, I stock the Perfect Fit Harnesses. Sometimes the harness requires a harness and collar link to ensure the safety of the dog especially if he's known as a Houdini. These can be purchased from the likes of Amazon.

If you'd like a free fitting of the Perfect Fit Harnesses please let me know

We welcomed little Monty on Monday evening 🐾 His family brought his brother, Hugo, to us 2 years ago. If I'm honest it actually felt like 2 months ago, where does time go? 🤣 Lovely to welcome the family back though 🥰

A dog's progress is NOT linear
Author Unknown

When teaching your dog something or your dog develops from a puppy to adulthood his progress won't be linear.

You'll have good days and then 'bad' days. We must remember our dogs are just being dogs. They are also developing and navigating their way through our confusing lifestyles in the best way they can.
Patience and understanding goes along way but also spending time with them teaching them what it is we would like them to do is crucial. But it does take time!

Happy training,
Leah

It's that time of year again 🐖🐽🐖🐽

It's that time of year again 🐖🐽🐖🐽

Pannage started today (15th) until Friday 28th November - Please drive carefully!

Many of the animals that roam the New Forest such as pigs, horses, sheep, cows and donkeys are owned by the Commoners.

Under the ancient practice of pannage, pigs are released into the Forest to feed on fallen acorns, beechmast, chestnuts and other nuts. Green acorns in particular are poisonous to the ponies and cattle which roam the forest the majority of the year.

As the nights draw in sooner, and with free-roaming animals feeding across the Forest, there is a risk of drivers in particular becoming involved in a collision with an animal.

For more information on Pannage please visit their website: https://orlo.uk/LGcxA

The last couple of years we have received reports of pigs being hit and killed in the New Forest. Where we can make enquiries and identify drivers we will issue drivers with Conditional Cautions, with a requirement that they pay the pig owner compensation (usually £100's).

In the event of a collision, it’s important to stop your vehicle, check on the animal if safe to do so, identify your location and report to the police by calling 999. It is worth downloading the What3Words app on your phone >>> https://orlo.uk/bGPbe

This can help identify exactly where you are, and this information can then be used by a police call handler to help track you down.

It is an offence to fail to report a collision with an animal under Section 170(8) of the Road Traffic Act 1988. The animals captured within this piece of legislation are horse, cattle, donkey, mule, sheep, pig, goat and dog. #10625

In August we celebrated Poppy as our Dog of the month.

Poppy (right) is a young golden retriever with a very excited outlook on life. She adores attention and is eager to please.
She lives with Daisy, a 13 year old golden retriever and struggled to stay calm around her in the house so had to be separated quite a bit.
Over the past couple of months we have been working on having the dogs together and I was super pleased to see this photo of the two of them together. It was also really lovely to spend time with the girls at the weekend in the same room
Keep up the great work Team Poppy 💪🏻
