Our neurology team recently saw Forest, a lovely 3year old Labrador with a history of apparent discomfort, reluctance to jump and exercise.

Following MRI, Forest was diagnosed with an abnormal bone in his lower back called a transitional vertebra. A transitional vertebra is where a spinal bone takes on the traits of the section next to it. This was likely contributing to early degeneration of the supporting tissues in this area and secondary nerve compression.

He unfortunately did not improve with medical treatment or a course of 3 epidural steroid injections, being unable to return to exercise without being painful. He therefore returned to see our neurologist Edward Ives and neurology resident Sophie Stables for further imaging for surgical planning and surgery.

Forest underwent a lumbosacral spinal stabilisation surgery whereby 3D-printed patient specific drill guides were used to make placement of his implants as safe as possible, maximising the strength of the construct. The affected bones were stabilised using titanium pedicle screws and rods as seen in the video, before bone graft was collected from his hip bones to pack around these implants with the aim of promoting fusion and the best long-term outcome for this young dog. 🦴🤍

The video shows Forest looking very happy the day after surgery and he has continued to bounce back, doing well at his recent 4 week check! 🐕

Right now, cats across the UK are in urgent need of blood transfusions and there is no national supply of lifesaving blood products.

Pet Blood Bank UK are launching the UK’s first national cat blood donation service, and are looking for cats to help make it possible!

Could your cat be a donor?
🐈Fit and healthy, and not currently on any medication
🐈Between 1 and 8 years old
🐈Weigh 4.5kg (9.9 pounds / 0.7 stone) or more
🐈Happy to be handled and comfortable around people
🐈Up to date with flea and worm treatments
🐈Never travelled outside of the UK or Ireland

By registering your cat to donate blood, you won’t just be helping to save lives, you’ll be joining a pioneering community of cat owners who are part of this much-needed service from the very beginning.

🔔 Shout out to Cephalo (He's named after the dinosaur Pachycephalosaurus because he has the tendency to headbutt doors and windows open!) - Ceph is our feline blood donor hero, owned by Shannon one of our lovely Client Care Team members and is always ready in an emergency! Ceph has generously donated blood 3 times!

To thank you and your cat for being part of a life saving community, PBB will offer every donor cat completely free of charge -
💛A full vet health check before every donation
💛An annual heart scan and annual blood screening
💛Blood typing at first appointment
💛Treats and food throughout their appointment
💛A goody bag to take home after donation
💛A lifesaver tag for their cat carrier
💛Milestone gifts at every 5th donation

Introducing Tia one of our amazing Registered Veterinary Nurses who qualified in 2022!

She began her career in general practice before joining Anderson Moores in September 2025 to further develop her knowledge and skills. Tia works as a multidisciplinary nurse which means that she rotates around all departments of the hospital. She enjoys every rotation, as no two days are ever the same.

Outside of work she has two Ragdoll cats called Ajax and Bluebell. In her spare time she enjoys long walks in the forest, going to the gym, and sewing. 😺

🐾 Support for Tripod Dogs! 🐾

Tripod dogs are amazing at adapting after amputation. They return to running, playing, and enjoying life, but the increased demand placed on their remaining limbs can have long-term impacts on comfort and mobility. 🐶

That's why we're pleased to support WIMBA's Tripod Summer Fest, a summer initiative focused on proactive support, education, and long-term mobility for tripod dogs.💙

As part of this initiative, eligible tripod dog patients can receive 40% off a WIMBA Carpal GO orthosis, bringing the cost down to £770.

This project, delivered in collaboration with Tripawds, aims to help veterinary teams and pet owners start conversations earlier about protecting mobility and supporting long-term comfort before problems arise.

✅ 40% discount on WIMBA Carpal GO for eligible tripod dogs
✅ Helps provide proactive orthotic support where appropriate
✅ Offer available until 31 August 2026

If you have a tripod dog and would like to learn more about eligibility and whether a WIMBA Carpal GO could help, please get in touch with our team. 🐶💜

Meet Zalze the 8 year old Labrador!

Zalze was referred to our Oncology department in March 2024, She was diagnosed with an aggressive grade 3 carcinoma and adenoma in the mammary region. She was transferred to surgery for Hilario Gonzalez Montano and Catrina Pennington to remove the mammary mass and for removal of the axillary and accessory lymph node that this carcinoma drained into.

Once Zalze had recovered from this surgery she was given a course of chemotherapy for multiple weeks for microscopic disease that can't be removed surgically. Chemotherapy in pets is generally well tolerated, with typically minimal side effects when compared to human cancer patients. This is due to the use of lower doses and less intense protocols than in people, as we aim to improve survival times as much as possible without compromising quality of life.

Once the course of chemotherapy had been completed she returned for restaging to check the progress of the condition. The re-staging involves chest x-rays and abdominal ultrasound every 3-6 months. Fortunately, each re-staging has shown Zalze remains in remission. We are so pleased with the ongoing remission for this lovely girl, she is such a happy dog and we have loved seeing her at Anderson Moores.

Morgan moved to the UK from South Africa at 18 years old and shortly started her veterinary nurse training at a first opinion practice.

After completing her nurse training, Morgan stayed at the practice for 2 years before she wanted to expand her skills and experience, so she joined Anderson Moores last year and has loved it!

Morgan is a multidisciplinary nurse which means that no day is the same as she rotates through the various departments within the practice. She has always had a love for animals and wholeheartedly believes that being a registered Veterinary Nurse is what she was meant to do!

In her spare time she enjoy travelling, horse riding and spending time with her cat, Murphy 🐱

Meet Fudge, the 3 year old Persian cross! 😻

Fudge was referred to Anderson Moores following ingestion of a ribbon! Her owners noticed some smaller pieces following a few episodes of vomiting and retching.

Fudge was anaesthetised for an abdominal ultrasound where our imaging team identified the ribbon extending from her stomach through her small intestines.
Given the extension into the small intestine, the ribbon could not be removed via endoscopy (using a camera placed through the mouth) and surgical removal was the only option. Fudge was then transferred to our surgery department for this procedure.

An exploratory celiotomy performed by surgical specialist Catrina Pennington and surgical resident Roxanne Fontanini allowed careful retrieval of the ribbon though the stomach. It was a metre of organza ribbon! 🧵

Fudge recovered well from her anaesthetic and was discharged the following day!🧡

Finding the right points for happier joints! 🐾🧡

To help improve comfort, mobility and quality of life for our canine friends, we offer Acupuncture as part of our pain clinic led by Anaesthetist Lydia.

Acupuncture may be beneficial for dogs with -
▪️ Arthritis and joint pain
▪️ Chronic pain
▪️ Recovery after surgery
▪️ Muscle tension - relaxes tight muscles and muscle spasms.
▪️ Spinal Issues - pain management for conditions like Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD).

How does acupuncture work?

▪️ Very fine needles are placed into 'acupoints', these are specific spots on the body where nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues meet. The needles send signals to stimulate the nervous system which release natural pain-relieving endorphins such as serotonin, reduce inflammation, and improve local blood circulation.
▪️ Treatments last around 30 minutes, and most dogs tolerate the process remarkably well - often so relaxed they drift off to sleep! 💤

If you'd like to learn more about how acupuncture could help your dog, please speak to your vets for a referral to our pain clinic.
