‼️Haemonchus (barber pole worm) alert‼️ We've diagnosed multiple cases in ewes and older lambs in the last 10 days. These worms don't always show up on faecal egg counts straight away, but can be identified at post-mortem. Whilst unfortunately the first sign is often losses, symptoms include weakness, pale/white membranes (e.g. in the eyes, pictured) and bottlejaw.

We are supporting this week. Working on farms in both routine and stressful, emergency situations, and knowing farmers and colleagues impacted by accidents, it's a subject often in our thoughts.

It's easy for "health & safety policies" to get pushed to the bottom of to-do lists, but even just reflecting on those "near-miss" events that happen in day-to-day farm work - considering what could be set up or done differently - could make the difference next time. 💛

BLUETONGUE UPDATE: this year's first cases have now been confirmed (two individual sheep with symptoms, in Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire). Two cattle have also tested positive on blood samples in Herefordshire.

Transmission risk via midges is now considered very high. If you have any concerns about a sick animal, or would like to discuss vaccination, please give us a call.

Since 1st July, the whole of England is in the Restriction Zone making animal movements much simpler. For other movements involving Wales/Scotland, there is a useful checker tool at https://ruminanthw.org.uk/bluetongue-virus-hub/bluetongue-movements-checker/

From today, 1st July, the bluetongue Restriction Zone covers the whole of England. This means livestock can move within the country with no need for pre-movement blood testing. There are still some rules around germinal products (embryos/semen) in England, and Wales and Scotland rules may differ.

Tick season is here - we have confirmed cases of redwater and tick fever in recent weeks. Both diseases cause anaemia, so symptoms include:
⚠Lethargic animals, progressing to weakness and reluctance to walk/stand
⚠High fever and pale membranes (eyes, mouth)
⚠The typical "red water" dark red/black urine - not seen in tick fever

Quick treatment is important as the disease can quickly become fatal. More information on diagnosis and treatment in our June newsletter.

❗️COCCIDIOSIS WARNING ❗️

We have seen some exceptionally high counts for "cocci" in the last fortnight, especially in lambs. (We're very grateful for our Ovacyte faecal egg count machine, which counts these up to 100,000 eggs per gram!)

It's relatively early in the season for such counts but good proof that faecal testing is worthwhile - "just worming" these lambs would be no help for their condition.

Give us a call for advice or just drop samples in 🔬
