Ella is here and has met her new “sisters”. V & Choo have been fine, Tilly not so welcoming. But that’s no bad thing.

She’s understandably traumatised having been separated from Mum and siblings, she remains wary of everything, she’s not eating well and she’s submissive. So, all normal.

Like all pups, she just needs time and love. I’m sure she’ll be fine.

I expect an all-night serenade tonight. Again, situation normal. 😂

The arrival in 10 days time of this bundle of fluff will mark the start of the next revolution of the Circle of Life.

Training/conditioning/engineering of behaviours will start on day 1 to see her ready to join the picking up team in 18 months time.

I’m looking forward to starting the process all over again, trying simultaneously to avoid the mistakes and repeat the successes of the past.

Daisy Moo, the best gundog in the whole world, passed to the shooting field in the sky this morning.

Heartbroken is nowhere near adequate. 😢

My thanks go to Geoff Shore Gundog Training for this exercise. Here’s my attempt to replicate a video he posted on his page on 12 March, well worth a watch.

Geoff is an excellent trainer, one of only very few trainers whom I respect. Not only are his dogs of a higher standard than mine, but also I’m trying this exercise with a young GWP and not a Labrador.

Thank you, Geoff, for the inspiration: I owe you royalties!

One for the purists, perhaps?

Running straight lines - the holy grail of retriever training.

Here, I compare V (an inexperienced GWP @ 23 months) with Choo (a much older Lab @ nearly 7 years old) in their ability to maintain straight lines doing what I call a “blind ladder” drill involving 5 retrieves each.

Who will emerge the winner …….?

What a wuss!

Having swum happily in the past, V has developed an unexpected reluctance to enter water …… Perhaps it’s a bit chilly for my precious princess 😅

We’ll get there! Watching the labs will give her confidence, I’m sure.
