Our veterinary surgeon/clinical director, Sarah has just completed a Bull fertility testing course!

Calving is now well underway and while it may seem early to be thinking about the next production cycle it will soon be time for bulls to go back in with the herd and get to work again.
Fertility testing will detect most problems and give you time to correct them and limit any losses. You may also consider a fertility exam before purchasing or hiring a new bull, or if you have any concerns at any point that a bull may not be fertile.

Bull fertility testing includes:
A clinical exam checking body condition, the eyes, teeth and mobility/feet
Assessment of testicle size (yes it really does matter) and ruling out any gross abnormalities
Assessment of the internal s*x glands and pen*s/prepuce
Analysis of a semen sample – this is collected by inserting a probe into the re**um and applying a voltage (this may make your eyes water but causes minimal discomfort)
We look at s***m count, motion and morphology to assess whether a sample is satisfactory.
Contact Sarah at the surgery on 016973 20242 to discuss booking your bulls in.
Look out for info regarding more advanced breeding services in the future on our page!

It is important that farmers are storing their vaccines appropriately.
Failing to maintain the correct fridge storage temperature compromises vaccine effectiveness and consequently animal health.
If you are going to store vaccines on-farm, you should measure the maximum and minimum temperature on a daily basis. Maximum/minimum thermometers can be bought for as little as £10 and data loggers for £20-£30.
Your fridge temperature should be between 2⁰C and 8⁰C with an ideal temperature of 5⁰C.
Farmers are being urged to check their farm fridge temperature after new research conducted by MSD Animal Health found none of the fridges observed storing vaccines were able to maintain the correct internal temperature of between 2⁰C and 8⁰C.
If you suspect you fridge is below 0⁰C or has dropped below 0⁰C the integrity of your vaccines may have been compromised.
Storing your vaccine over 8⁰C shortens it's shelf life.
Having a separate fridge for your vaccines ensures that the door is not opened constantly and the inside temperature will not fluctuate and compromise the efficacy of your vaccines.
Vaccines should also be stored in the correct place within the fridge, not at the back where they may freeze, or in the door where the temperature will go up each time it is opened.

If you are concerned about vaccine storage facilities on your farm call us on: 016973 20242
